Draw Their Fire and Determination

By Gungywamp, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Here's a rules question that just occurred to me. Whenever I run a Howlrunner swarm or mini-swarm I usually end up putting Swarm Tactics on Howlrunner and have a BSP wingman with DTF. However, I was considering putting Determination on Howlrunner, so I was wondering:

If Howlrunner has an incoming critical hit, can she look at the card first before choosing to use Determination (if it is a Pilot crit) or DTF (if it is a Ship crit)? Or does the act of flipping over the card before declaring you use DTF mean that you are taking the crit on Howlrunner?

I can't remember where it was, but I remember reading a ruling somewhere that yes, you could look at the crit before deciding whether to use determination or DTF.

DTF moves a die result to a different ship. That happens prior to the suffer damage step of the combat sequence. You draw damage cards during suffer damage. So you have to use DTF before you know what card it is.

Two replies, two conflicting answers. Who's next?

Like I said, I don't remember where I am getting that, so it is entirely possible that I am misremembering something, or conflating 2 different issues.

Based on the wording of DTF, I would agree with dvor. I just remember...something, that said otherwise.

Were you thinking of page 8 in the FAQ regarding the Chewbacca crew card where one can look at the card dealt and decide whether to use chewie to discard it or not?

Thanks for the input. I would lean more towards divor's interpretation, unfortunately for my list idea. When I use DTF, normally I decide before flipping the card, so I would imagine the same would happen here. It doesn't mean that Determination and DTF are useless in conjunction, just far less useful, and likely Determination would go unused.

Quite possibly.

Draw Their Fire moves the Die Result. Howlrunner is still hit, but the Crit goes to a schmuck.

Determination discards a Face-Up Pilot Damage card. You HAVE to look at it to determine whether Determination triggers, but if it does, you simply don't take the damage at all. Howlrunner is still hit, but the Crit disappears.

+1 for dvor.

Dice Results -> Damage -> Cards. DTF operates on Dice Results, Determination acts on Cards, by the time the card is dealt it's too late to use Draw Their Fire.

adding in text of cards:

As Buhallin said above.

Yeah, you had the same thought I did. Put both DTF and Determination on an A-Wing and just use it to soak all the Pilot crits. :) Too bad it doesn't work. Still, keep up the crafty ideas. :)

Another member backing this interpretation.

I know when the idea of getting to Pilot skills on an A-Wing came up this was questioned. I mean if you had Determination and knew what card DTF would draw then you would know it you could safely pull a crit just to throw it away. While it sort of works it will only happen if you get lucky because DTF is used blind.
