Tournament Etiquitte Tips for Newbies

By mlbrogueone, in X-Wing

With the Assault at Imdaar Alpha tournament coming up this weekend, there will probably be quite a few new people heading into tournaments (myself included) who have only recently been bitten by the X-wing bug.

Since I primarily view this first as an opportunity to go out, have a good time, and meet new people, I'd rather not alienate anybody by committing any unwritten faux paus.

What are some etiquitte tips some of you more experienced players would like to share with the newbies now before the tournaments starts in a constructive manner so some of us can avoid committing a taboo without knowing it.

Based on my limited experience and things I've read, I'd provide the following:

1.) Pay attention and be focused. Remember to take all of your actions at the appropriate times. Remember to put your shield tokens on your ships before the start of the match. I don't think you're allowed to go back and say "oops, I forgot to take a focus action." The guys I've been practicing with have been very forgiving, but when tournament time comes I'm sure the gloves are off.

2.) Don't bring super smelly food.

So what other tips do you guys have?

3) know the rules of the game, and follow them.

5) Bath before coming to the Tourny.

6) Bring everything you need to play.

Offer to shake hands with your opponent and thank them for the game, especially if you lose. Good sportsmanship isn't just for little kids soccer games. :)

And the rules of the particular location. I played at a store recently that did not allow food or beverages in the play area, but did have a side area for snacking and socializing between games.

Could I ask for a quick sequence of events leading up to the beginning of the match. I've played very casually with people I know, so no hardline tourney environments.

Have your squad sorted and prepared before you go, my first match a couple tournaments ago was against a gentleman who had brought all of his ships and cards and had to comb through everything before we could start. Don't do this.

I keep all my x-wing stuff in a husky box but I do have a single 3750 plano that I use for game day. It fits a single squad, rulers, all the cards I will be using, tokens, dice, etc. I usually set this kit up a few days before and then bring it to a practice game to ensure I have everything I mean to. It is also really handy to have a flat top surface to transport your squad between tables.

The brand is not very important but, you must employ similar munitions, prior to take-off.

* People arrive and register, provide your list to the Mod and pay.

* People sit around and wait for others to arrive

* The first pairings are announced and people go to those tables

----

* Each player advises the other of the list they are playing

* Determine initiative

* Place asteroids based on initiative (r2 from sides, r1 from other asteroids)

* Place ships based on PS and then Initiative

* Start game

(did I miss anything?)

When you register and provide your list can I bring in a print out from one of the squad builder web sites, or is there a form we have to fill out at the store, or does this vary store to store?

I have been to multiple store and they all have a form to fill out.

I'm another X-wing newbie. This all seems like pretty sensible tourney advice to me.

Ok, cool. I'll probably bring a squad builder print out anyway and transfer it to their form just so I'm organized the day of.

That is perfect, thank you!

Announce your actions before taking them.

Remember: You CANNOT measure before taking an action, and you CANNOT change your action because you do not like the outcome!

I bring three copies of the list builder printout - one to turn in, one to hand to my opponent (which they give back after the match), and one to keep for myself to make sure I've got everything out correctly during setup. I've never had a TO require me to transfer my squad list to their form.

In my experience, handing in a squad builder printout is sufficient. But, as always, your mileage may vary. Make sure your name is on the printout somewhere!

this is all great advise. As a new player I plan on informing each of my opponents that I am new and let me know if I handle something wrong so I can start doing it right.

I don't suppose someone could elaborate just a little bit more on what happens after the first match in terms of breaks between matches, how you rotate from one match to the next, how they announce the finals, etc.

I actually show up with my whole fleet and have to dig (hoping to get in a couple of games afterward possibly), but I show up early enough that I can put my squad together and have a few minutes to kibitz before go time, generally a half hour.

I bring my whole fleet because I simply cant decide what Im going to run until I get there. Ive also had been known from time to time at bringing out a different squad for people to gawk at before pulling my real sqaud out from under my hat...

DO NOT BRING A SWARM (more then 5 ships) UNLESS you can have your dials all set within a minute!

Probably the best advice we should have given. At X-Wing, we try to "Fly Casual"

Or do so, and just be prepared to counter accusations of "Quit Stalling" with "I'm sorry, I'm new!"

One of the best things I ever read on another thread like this was:

Bring a tray.

Seriously if the first 10 minutes of your round is spent by your opponent unpacking all their cards, miniatures and tokens, then assembling their miniatures its a real pain, with a tray you leave your squad assembled, all your relevant tokens, dice, pilot cards and upgrades all in one handy spot and takes all of 30 seconds to setup.

if you do bring the rest of your X-Wings stuff with you, try to keep it packed away during games so its not in everyone's way
