Epic casual

By SpaceagentSpiff, in X-Wing

Hi all.

I am just a causal gamer playing for fun (no tournaments or organised games anywhere near my home :( )

I have the transport (but not yet played it) and the Tantive is in the post :)

Is it just me or do the rules not really say much about board size and squad size (I know they do for tournament rules)?

I think 300 points is a LOT - it both means the game will take a long time but also - it means you have to buy a lot of imperials to fill out 300 points! I feel like I have a fair number of ships, but I dont think I can get it up to 300 points (will certainly be all named pilots with decked out ships rather than high number of ships).

So what squad and board size do you people play on/with for casual Epic gaming. Im not asking about what the correct rules are (if there even are any) but what people use and have used.

I haven't had a chance to play my huge ships, so my observations are more theoretical.

For the board size perspective, just from looking at the big ships on the playing field, I would recommend using the 6x3 size to not get crowded if possible.

As for the fighters, sure as long as Empire doesn't have huge ships to account for a big chunk of the point budget, it will require more small ships for the Empire or at least restrict the list selection somewhat, in particular if you were gathering balanced sets of ships or even leaning more towards rebels.

In a casual set up you can choose any point limit you like, it doesn't have to be the full 300. Just look at the huge rebel ships with reasonable upgrades an perhaps one or two additional small ones and see where you end up point-wise, that should be an usable minimum.

I thought 3x6 is the standard size for epic play. It may be mandatory because with 300 points worth of objects on the field, you'll run out of space real fast.

6x3 is only for epic tournament. The table size is up to you. However the standard 3x3 would be feeling pretty tight.

We did a 200 pt game with the transport which felt Ok.

We also did a 300 pt game on my cousins poker table. Hexagonal shape, bout 4' across. Worked well

(any idea how to upload pics on here from a phone)

I've done a 200pt game with a transport on the standard 3x3 and it worked fine. The only issue was that the transport's movement was very predictable.

If using the Corvette or 300 points I would definitely want a a bigger table. 3x6 is convenient since people already have them at that size for WH40k etc.

Just did a 300pt epic game at the weekend and we used a 6x3 foot area. It would have led to the huge ships crushing everything on a smaller table.
Rebels had:
1 x transport

1 x corvette

2 x Xwing

1 x Awing

Empire had:
3 x Tie-Int

1 x Tie-Adv

1 x Tie-Bom

1 x Lambda

2 x Firespray

There was plenty of room for the small ships to fly away from the huge ones to avoid the worst of their effects, though the large ships were forced to close for effect.

If you want to play casually at 300 points but don't have enough ships why don't you try setting a lower point limit for ships only (for both players of course) and the rest of the points up to 300 can be used for upgrades only. This would bring in some additional diversity in the game - spending bunch of points on upgrades won't feel like a waste plus it will allow you to play on a smaller area... maybe 3x4 as some missions suggest?

Let me know how that goes if you try it.

I've been eyeing up a 4x4 playmat. Square feet = 16 so in theory it fits right in between Epic an Regular. I have a feeling it may have more 'usable' space vs the 3x6 which might feel 'thin but long' vs 'roomy'

Anyways, 4x4 should be just dandy with 200 point squads

4x4 is 16 square feet

doh, math!

I've been pondering this issue too. I have a decent fleet, but with no epic ships, the Imperials do take a lot to fill out the list. The Defender and Phantom will really help here, as they will eat up a bunch of points.

I'm currently debating buying a 3rd Imperial Aces to work with in the interim. It'll give me 8 Interceptors, which is a ton, but probably not bad for larger games. Useless for smaller games tho, save for being able to match colors amongst fleets.
