Average number of rounds in a timed tournament game?

By GlobeTrotting, in X-Wing

In particular, if a game goes to time in a 75-minute round, any estimate as to the number of game rounds that are typically played before the buzzer is called? I've never really kept track--obviously it depends somewhat on the builds...

I don't know, maybe three even four, depends of the results of the attacks, greettings.

I think you are asking the number of turns per game.

That is VERY variable. If it is swarm vs swarm you get far fewer turns than falcon vs falcon.

I would say the extremes of the ranges would be between 5 and 20, depending on how well the players can dogfight.

Depends on the actual game itself. Fast wipes probably take around 7 turns. Fighting till you both have 1 ship each, probably 20-40 turns depending on how fast you play

While there may be a true "average" it will not mean much when you consider the ships and fighting styles used.

To me the better questions to ask are:

1. Rounds/time to first shots.

2. Rounds/time of initial engagement (which may be all some games need.)

3. Rounds during a "cleanup" operation.

The cleanup is the hard stage to judge because there may not be one or a squadron may move into that stage quickly. If you're in a Y-Wing and trying to chase down an Interceptor there could be a lot of rounds played quickly. If your initial engagement breaks down into a random furball you may not get as many rounds in.

In most games, not enough :P I find too often players rush to engage one another when I find the most entertaining part of the game is setting up the approach that benefits you and hinders the opponent. Sometimes I go as far as to sacrifice a shot by some of my ships to get the fight to happen in the area of the board I want it to. I never really know if this is a valid play, but it usually works out in my favor. Good question though, it'd be nice to get some numbers on this topic if there are Math-wingers out there with good records/spreadsheets.

The trick is engaging soon enough to win in the time allotted but like you said controlling the timing so you can get an early lead

Myself and my friends have started playing 60 min timed games to get practice in. First few games I got tabled before the time limit lol but mostly we get 6/7 rounds in.
