Is the Tie Defender overrated?

By EmpireErik, in X-Wing

Where does, "I don't think it will perform well in tournaments" say I hate the ship.

I think it looks like a 10 year old decided to throw more wings on a Tie Fighter to make it look cooler, but I don't hate the ship. I just think it doesn't have what it takes to be tournament viable. Hell, I don't think it was designed to be tournament viable, I think it was designed for Epic play. The named pilots require support from other ships, or to be firing at Epic ships to be at their best. That screams Epic Play to me. Especially because In Epic their cost isn't nearly so prohibitive, and the loss of a single Defender isn't crippling.(Not to mention how unlikely it is they will get sniped by a CR-90.)

That isn't hate. It's an analysis of what works in the metagame, and how the Defender doesn't fit it.

Those 7 can theoretically 1-shot a Firespray-31, I might add.

OMG a Firespray can be one-shotted? it must be overrated/overcosted I will never play it again.

Hmm too bad their isn't a combo to 1shot a named nonchewie Falcon.

Too bad the best Imperials can do is 6 dice in one turn not counting reroll's

Regrettably this may in fact push us towards a YT heavy meta again... It counters the empires best ships other than Firesprays, and plays well against everything they have.

I wish YT turrets were only two range...

I really like in Attack Wing, Enterprise can fire 360 but anything out of its forward arc is -1 attack die. That actually makes it still about strategy instead of just being OP training wheels.

You mammah jammahs are so entertaining, I kid you not, when i got home from work this evening and saw about 4-5 pages of this I made a bowl of kettle corn just for the occasion. Splendid show, everyone.

Really though I'm not being sarcastic. It feels good to watch several pages of the most polite, factually based flame war I think I've ever seen.

:P

You cannot simply remove half of the math and declare victory because of that one time at band camp you saw Vader get violated.

Oh God why!? I'm trying to forget it ever happened!!! ... Sometimes at night, I can still hear him cry.....

The respirator clicking between sobs makes it worse… so much worse...

Plus the Darth Vader Crew

I think by definition a flame war can't be polite...

Six health, 3 from shields, doesn't just mean it lasts longer it also ensures that an early negative outlier does not finish the ship off. The more shots it takes, the more the green dice will tend to "even themselves out". The Defender is one of the most reliable ships in the game because of this, you cannot just ignore the moderating effect of +3 shields on a 3 Agility ship if your argument is to be a valid one.

This concept is known as "Regression to the Mean":

Among other things, it means the more times you run specific statistical likelihoods, the likelier that outliers will cancel each other out.

Yes, but if I just said that a great many people would not know what I was talking about, especially those for whom English is not their primary language. :)
