Using Traveler Adventure Books from Game Designer's Workshop

By Midnight_X2, in Game Masters

Someone posted a recommendation for the adventure book "Murder on Arcturus Station" which I picked up for under $4 on DriveThruRpg. The adventure book is excellent and should make for a fun murder mystery over a session of gaming.

I'm wondering if someone can give me their opinion on other adventure books from Travelers. "Prison Planet" and "Safari Ship" look interesting but I'd love to get some accounts of their quality. At $4 an adventure I'm not worried about the money; I'd just like to get a heads up on the best adventures from their line to save me the reading time.

Thanks for the assist!

I have read through Prison Planet and I really like it. (It's just too bad I let my players escape from Zygerrians, I don't think they're ready for another set of incarceration sessions.) Just as an NPC resource alone it's useful. But I also like the structured way they allow the prisoners to gather information. The timing is that the PCs get to have only a couple events *per week*, so their long-term stay is guaranteed. The plots and power plays are also very good, with lots of opportunity to play various sides or make their own play for power and escape. The PC's prison reputation is a great roleplaying aid as well, kind of like Obligation...too high and they have good cred with other prisoners and the guards, but not the warden or staff; too low and they're considered stooges and informers by other prisoners and guards, but might get special perks from the warden or staff.

Just a note, Traveller is a lot more lethal than EotE. Given the cheap prices I DL'd the original (GDW) version of the basic rules...you can die during character creation! Also, you have almost zero control over your character's initial and early development, there are scads of tables for this or that career result, some of which lead to death. Ridiculous, but so very early 80s RPG...nostalgic for me. :)

Anyway, this lethality is carried over into Prison Planet, but that is easily tweaked. I haven't picked up Safari Ship, but am interested depending on what others say.

I went ahead and purchased "21 Plots: Samaritan". It is an absolute hotbed of adventure possibilities. The book lays out 21 story synapses followed by a d6 roll to determine which plot gets married to it. All of the adventures involve the heroes being asked to help someone or be hired by someone (hence the name Samaritan). Since it's sci-fi it's all easily adaptable to Star Wars. There are other "21 Plots" books. I can just offer a review of Samaritan which is very good.

Holy ****. Someone is releasing new content for Traveller? It blows me away that there's still a market for that. The game is older than I am.

Mongoose Traveller has been out for a few years. My personal library can atest to that. It's version 7?: Classic, Mega, New Era, T4, Gurps, Traveller d20, then Mongoose. Both Mongoose and now T5 (by the original author Marc Miller) are currently still in production.

The latest Mongoose version is a throw back to the Classic Traveller system which is the favorite for quite a few fans. It's also semi-compatible to the more advanced T5.

Yours truly has credits in the Mongoose Traveller version of 2300 AD . I helped re-write a large part of the character generation chapter. :)

Most of the old Traveller adventures are pretty good, I especially liked this set:

  • Double Adventure 1-Shadows/Annic Nova (Both are good but Shadows is the one I like the most also it's a good place to start a bigger adventure)
  • Double Adventure 3-Death Station/Argon Gambit (Death Station is a lot of fun but you need to somehow limit the player's gear to get the full effect (No disintegrations...), alternatively you can up-gear the opponents but I think it's a better adventure if the PCs aren't armed for war - oh and play this one in the evening with creepy music)

I went ahead and picked up some of the adventure books for insanely low prices on DriveThruRPG.

Here's what I've obtained:

21 Plots - Great book that present 21 story hooks with six possible twists for each one. You can randomly roll or pick one out.

21 Plots: Misbehave - This book is for scoundrels and thieves. These are 21 underworld plots perfect for EotE characters.

21 Plots: Samaritan - This book presents 21 plots where the heroes are approached to help those in need. Another good fit for EotE characters.

Prison Planet - I don't think I'll run this one. It presents a very good simulation of long term incarceration in a science fiction prison. However, it's designed to represent several weeks, months, or even years, so some GMs might not want to go down this road.

Safari Ship - This book doesn't present too much that I would use. It details a big game hunters ship and his hunt. A GM could easily come up with this material on his own.

Murder on Arcturus Station - This adventure is excellent! I can't rate it high enough. It presents a murder mystery with nine suspects and all the information a GM needs on motives, the means to commit murder, and the evidence left behind. This will make for a great detective session with my group.
