How big can your battles be and still work? Im still slowly investing in this game. I would love to here your large scale stories. Point costs , fleet compositions and strategies. Also your insights as a community would be invaluable. Ty in advance:)
stories of large scale battles.
Check out the Battle Report subforum.
Well usually I get together with friends that love Star Wars as well on fri nights once a month and we usually have 3 vs 3 battles sometimes 4 vs 3 and we do a 180 point limit or 200. This gives each player roughly 65 points to field what he wants. This past weekend we got to try out the corvette and did a true epic play with 300 points per side and did 4 vs 4 on 3x6 table. Game took about 4 hrs including a break in between for food (had a Buddy smoking chicken while we played). It was an awesome day. As far as strategies go pretty much the same as a small scale. Imperials need lots of ships with not many upgrades while the rebels need less ships with more upgrades. At least that's what I've seen so far in our games. Whenever the imperials start spending more points on upgrades instead of ships they always lose. Not saying this is standard but just in the games I've played it's something I've noticed.
I have a friend who has spent a lot of money on this game. Let's just say we could probably play 800 pts each with what he has, at least with Rebels (who have more expensive ships).
We've play roughly once a week and 300 point games are not uncommon for us. They take a few hours, but they're fun. Especially if we go for "fun" builds over optimized builds, which usually involves taking a lot of named pilots, which you can't do in smaller games.
I especially like to run "alphabet builds" with Tycho (PTL, Concussion Missiles), Horton (Double Torps), Wedge (PTL, Torps, R2), Ten Numb (Autoblaster), Biggs (R2-F2, Stealth Device) and one of the Falcons as a base, with some points to spare for Luke or other pilots. It's not the most optimized build, but it's fun. 4 blue squadron b-wings with advanced sensors is a great way to spend 100 points, and that's what I'd start with if I was optimizing rebels.
He has 3 lambdas and something we've learned is that they're great tanks, at 10 hp and 3 attack for 21 points. They're the least maneuverable ship in the game though, unless you count the huge ships. Engine upgrades can save your hide.
I think interceptors are better in smaller point games, though my friend has been relatively successful with them in larger games. They shine brightest when they have room to maneuver. I once played a 50 point game (2 interceptors vs. 2 x-wings) and my interceptors danced circles around his x-wings.
Bombers are really good in larger point games, where you have more ships, and the bombs are harder to avoid. The first time he fielded them against me I made a huge tactical error maneuvering and he killed 3 ships at full health in one round just with his bombs. I conceded after that.
I like to use firesprays in larger point games because generally the weaker ships get shot at first and they'll stick around to the end game.
My friend has found that rebel captive is a great counter to Han with marksmanship. He has to do green maneuvers to lose the stress from shooting, and as fast as big ships move, he'll have to do some white maneuvers eventually.
I think, as far as imperials go, they can spend points on upgrades, they just have to be careful what upgrades they get and shouldn't put too many points into any one ship.
Ty for your input. I can see the joy of playing such a sizable game over a few hours. I have local store doing tournaments i should go and watch/participate. I would like to see how far capital ships will go. Also maybe the inception of space stations or other large scale siege attacks.
