I'd like to start playing and would love to join a casual group and/or one where someone is willing to help explain the ins and outs of the game. I'd like to be able to play in a group that would be friendly to kids coming along as well, but that is somewhat secondary.

Join the "X-wing Michigan" facebook group. There are definitely people out that way, and that is your best bet to find them.
@ Goober - It appears they only have 2 more times planned after the pre-release this Saturday (both in June).
