Ibtisam + Opportunist

By hanasolo, in X-Wing

Which is better?

Ibtisam or Luke with R2-D2?

I had an Opportunist list set up, this is what I came up with:

Ibtisam (28)
Opportunist (4)
Wes Janson (29)
Rookie Pilot (21)
Tala Squadron Pilot (13)
Homing Missiles (5)
Total: 100
I was a little nervous about a 3 ship build, so I went with a Z95. With Ibi and Wes, I doubt anyone will focus it down before it fires the missile, and with that it ought to do some damage and then run around plinking folks. If folks do focus it down early instead of working on Wes/Ibi, well, I figure I've already won.

I had an Epic game this past weekend that got me fiddling around with an Opportunist B-Wing Build. I present to you Team Xbox (Mk.II).

Wes Janson (29)

Veteran Instincts (1)

Jan Ors (25)

Nien Numb (1)

Ion Cannon Turret (5)

Ibtisam (28)

Opportunist (4)

Heavy Laser Cannon (7)

Total: 100

How does 6 Dice at every range, (while re-rolling one of them) sound?

But more seriously, I feel like this list might have issues insofar as a lot of points are sunk into the combination and it's incredibly fragile, but man does it hit hard. The Ion Cannon adds some nice utility to the HWK-290, and so long as her wingmen are alive, Jan can provide some nasty support with her ability.

Wes doesn't "need" VI, perhaps drop it and Numb for a Swarm tactics instead, get Ibby shooting at an 8?

This is true, though with this setup Jan can really take advantage of Numb, and considering her default dial has a Red 4 straight that he turns into a green, I've found him pretty useful for her (I've run this setup on the HWK more than a few times). Determination might be another alternative for either Wes or Jan to maintain some safety for their team synergy.

Alternatively, you could drop both of those for a Fire-Control System on Ibby, to get her some free TLs.

Wes having Vet Instincts means he always removes a token before the enemy returns fire, which is really advantageous. But, actually, I might strip VI and Nien Nunb also in favor of a Wingman on Jan. That way, you can always strip a stress from Ibtisam at the start of the combat phase if she needs it, as Opportunist doesn't work if you already have a stress.

I see the list as a biggest gun wins list. Ibby needs to not die to have success. One way to do this is wes stripping tokens before ibby shoots, enabling opportunist (I know, point of list.) Jan is there to boost ibby to super levels, 6 dice is crazy. But Opp lists that run wes, wedge, Luke will kill ibby before she can shoot. Boosting ibby to an 8 let's her try to shoot earlier, gets her the stress she likes earlier in the round, and hopefully kills a threat before it fires.

I guess with ibby unprotected, the ps bid squads will make your day long and not too fun.

Well, if you feel she's too unprotected, perhaps replacing Jan with Roark and giving Wes Swarm Tactics instead would do it. Boost him to boost her, and then they both shoot on twelves, faster than the current Wes PS10 meta. The downside is losing a die of damage at all ranges, but 5 dice still packs a potent punch. Also, doing it this way would allow for a few more points for other upgrades (Sensor Jammer, or another Shield/Hull point for Ibby?) as well as allow for a bid on initiative, to make sure your ships are shooting/moving first.

Or you could replace the HWK with Biggs to force your opponent off of Ibby for at least one turn, and still have 7 points of upgrades to spare across the ships (assuming only Ibby has upgrades with an HLC and Opportunist).

Personally, I've grown to really love Jan, so I'm looking to run that list sometime in the near future, but the Roark certainly has potential as well. I've perhaps undervalued the HWK as a tournament viable vessel. I usually run triple X-Wings (not original, I know, just have a lot of love for the ship), but I've been trying to get a HWK list running in 100 points. I've used it to pretty great effect in 150 Point and Epic games, I've just generally had a hard time squeezing it into the smaller lists. That's probably out of stubbornness more than anything as I generally dislike running Generic pilots and I like my ships with upgrades. Someone without such qualms could probably do it just fine.

My issue with the hawk tends to be the same. It is easy to fit a generic with a turret in, but the named folks outside of Roark are a bit too pricey for me in 100 point games. I feel like this may change once we get the Z95, though. You ought to be able to do a 4 ship list with Jan at that point...

HWK's really a 23 point boat at minimum, or 21 if you're going with the Ion Cannon.
