New player looking for a touch of advice

By DrakeRaids, in X-Wing

Hello! I'm pretty new to this game. I know you guys probably see these topics all the time but I didn't see one from recently, so i'm here making a pest of myself ^_^ ;. In any case, recently picked up up the starter set, an extra x-wing, a HWK, and the Falcon kit to try and dive right into it.

I'm pretty interested in getting a good hold on the more theorycrafting aspects of the game as well as actually manuvering my ships well, and was wondering if there where any good resources for those things like youtube channels that does good battlereports for me to watch, or podcasts I should be aware of? Is there a resource that gives an overview of what different ships are capable in general terms so I have a good idea of what I may need to be planning against? Any good written guides for a starter? Thanks!

This guy is awesome: just choose what you want to learn slowly. When you got a concept, go to the next thing. =)

No sweat. Fly Casual.

For learning the game, don't feel pressured to play full 100pt games. 50, 60, 70 pt games are a LOT OF FUN!!! Will also teach you to play better.

When you want to play a full game, you can't really go wrong with the Falcon + 2X (Han shoots first build) to start. Although, its really hard to play against this as a newbie and also i don't recommend starting to learn with the falcon because its too forgiving and youll never learn to play better.

There's a thread out here, a month or so back, which I can't find right now. It's full of lessons on flying.

One of them was to take your ships, throw asteroids on the table and don't stop until all ships have flown around each asteroid without hitting anything.

One way to get better at navigating with your ships: Play Snake/Golf.

  1. Deal out asteroids as you wish (including extras, for increased difficulty).
  2. Randomly place (toss out) a target of some sort. I use a Focus Token, but a Ship's Base might be better.
  3. Fly your ship so that it overlaps that target (or you can shoot that target at Range 1, for easy mode)
  4. Note the number of rounds it took you to get there. Take a 2-stroke penalty for taking damage from an asteroid.

Repeat steps 2-4 ad nauseum. Your numbers should generally decrease over time, as you train your pathfinding and spacial awareness.

Variations:

  • Fly a direct competition with an opponent. The person who got the last pip the last time is considered to have the lower pilot skill for the next one placed.
  • Fly with multiple ships. Only score the point when all of them have a Range 1 shot (Range 2 if you're flying a full Swarm).
  • As a sub-variation of the previous, randomize movement order. Either change the PS each round, or select each ship by the roll of a die.

When you get a list you like, practice a "Rollout". Most players' pre-combat rounds will tend to be consistent within themselves, so have a few at your disposal.

Practice placing asteroidsfor and against a theoretical list, so you know how best to disrupt them with terrain.

These are all little nuances that can help :)

This was all very helpful, thanks!
