This is from my notes for an NPC Rogue Trader in an old campaign.

For everyday wear? Form-fitting light carapace armour fashioned and inlaid with the finest midnight-blue Hagal sapphire, under a sleeveless hooded grey robe.

For formal (but not overly fancy) occasions? A variant on the Imperial Navy 1st Class uniforms (Gothic Sector), with some extra braid; and an assorted selection of medals and honours (not all necessarily earned by himself, but all awarded to members of the family), although not always the highest to which he is entitled; with a discreet conversion field generator concealed in the sash, and some ...useful servo skulls.

For battle: Has to be power armour. Designed to resemble the old mkIII suits worn by the Astartes, but human scaled. For when you absolutely, positively have to intimidate and then kill everybody in the room.

For the most formal and fancy of occasions? A much lighter suit of power armour, modelled on that of Lord Solar Macharius plated in electrum and studded with a thousand jewels, none less than 75 carats in weight. All the while surrounded by flunkies in holographic masks and bodygloves depicting the generals and followers of Macharius, and a flock of servoskulls bearing incense censers, aspergilla of blessed water and anointed oils, laud hailers, stenographic autoquills, and privacy-ensuring equipment like psi-dampers, cones of silence and discreet weapons systems (such as needle pistols).

Truly, range of outfits and accessories for all occasions. Heh, I miss ol' Carpinus Vendax Seneca, Scourge of the Fomarian Ring. I may have to bring him back at some point. Mind you, now I have players with Forbidden Lore: Fashion, I may need to rejig his wardrobe...

...and, yes, Forbidden Lore: Fashion is a thing in my campaigns. Keen-eyed (-eared?) PCs who pay attention to the descriptions I give of what characters are wearing can learn a lot about their intentions, affiliations and personality. This has the potential to let them skip ahead in plot terms, or would if they ever remembered it in sessions. Forgetting to check has left them in some uncomfortable situations- like accidentally infesting Footfall and the ships around the port with a large genestealer cult that was *maybe* a year from having a focus to call the hive fleets because they didn't pick up on the purple robes with the bitey crescent moon badges; or the time they accidentally got lippy with a platoon of Inquisitorial stormtroopers in undress uniform; or simply leave them out of the loop, like the time they missed a potentially very lucrative contact because they forgot the colour scarf that members of that particular Trading Guild were established to wear.

That is certainly gaudy enough. I approve.

...So what's the punishment for a regular citizen who knows too much about fashion? Do the Fashion Arbites come around and beat them with their fabulous shock batons?

I've only had three characters in my various RT fiction who have what i, at least, would describe as a specific, and "High-class" outfit.

Lord Captain Edric "Boss" Korvallus was my first try at a full-on Rogue Trader. As a man pushing into his elder years, even by 40k standards, and a career military man/adventurer up till now, his outfit is more refined and subdued than some people who are made out of money might go for. He wears black much of the time, sort of a stylized version of his navy uniform, but one that says "while this was inspired by the IN, if you are wearing it, you are a Silver Raven." As one who also does not so much care for all the mandatory cybernetics and tubes 40kers seem to collect as they age and travel, "Boss" doesn't have augmetics or hoses. His insight and battle acumen have kept him ahead of such injuries, and so he is still wholly flesh and blood, even if that is totally uncool in this verse. He is willing to acknowledge that age is a limiting factor, however, so much of his actions, like the armchair Admiral Bastille, are done with a ship, and from the command throne, while lesser lieutenants, hoping to curry favor from someone who doesn't take bribery or sucking up much, do groundwork. If he needs to leave the Hammerfall and go ruin-spelunking, he often dons power armor, more to support him than out of any real fear of injury, or fancy carapace, if the time-issue is going to be an issue. he has a power sword and plasma pistol as his always-accessories.

Always stylized Silver Ravens stuff, but not too showy. That's how Korvallus works, and expects his subordinates to. Hard to be decent and straight-laced in the grimdark future.

Lord Captain Aedan Qel-Drake is my other made-for-fun Rogue Trader. His apparel, like the man, is a bit more flashy. The only things that restrain his attire are that he wants to look better than his clothes, and the women who escort him really make many of the day-to-day decisions for him; if they say it would look more dumb than awesome, he believes it, in hopes of attracting more ladies; nothing says a Rogue Trader can't also be a very simple idi...man, especially when he was raised not expecting to inherit the Dragon's Warrant. Qel-Drake is more like the gentleman (if you're a lady) pirate get-up. most of the clothes are top-notch, if not necessarily the top-notch that partying nobles would wear, and the most prevalent component is his trenchcoat. Originally, I was going to have it be similar to the stuff Salamander Space Marines have sometimes, but everything Space Marine seems to be "no, you can't have any if you aren't Astartes!!!", so I wasn't sure he could somehow continue his dragon pun-theme with such a coat, so it's a long, dark, some kind of xenos hide jacket, but the mystery of what is sort of nice, too. As a young man, and initially not one intended to travel much, Aedan has also dodged the pesky tubes, and looks unmodified. Longish hair pulled back in a simple ponytail, dark to accent his blue eyes. The flashiest bits of his kit are, of course, his always-accessories. The gun in his set, Dragon's Ire, is a scale-theme housing, red casing inferno pistol, one of the finest examples of one of the finest guns there is. Part of a set, the other, Dragon's Wrath, is a similar gold-case version, though only one is ever in circulation (when Aedan passes, DI will be placed in stasis with his body, and DW will be withdrawn from his father's stasis casket, and presented to Aedan's successor, in a weird, probably pointless, but interesting to me family ritual. He also carries a plasma or bolt pistol, for those numerous times when he'd rather not bring Dragon's Ire, or feels that such a weapon is ludicrously unnecessary for the task at hand. For closer encounters, he favors a beautiful Edlar power sword with a story that involves a beautiful woman (no surprise with Qel-Drake). His blue-armored harem-guard round out his ostentatiousness.

Not a Rogue Trader, but still one whose outfit is as much of her as practically all the rest, Asteira Volaris is my Navigator Scion. Due to copious, hopefully not heretical work by her father, she is amongst the least mutated members of her House in decades, and his engineering plans to try and keep her that way. To all outward appearances, she is you average, sultry noble woman, and only the best dresses are for her. When partying it up, everything is about stealing the room. when actual missions call her to work, she wears form-fitting, light gear mostly, and an Eldar flip belt as an accessory. Her always-accessories are sort of silly, but if I haven't proven that I'm good for that, you haven't been reading every line (shame on you). One of her few mutations, and her most significant self-loathing issues is her hands (she has dark talons.) I am one who wrote at length about Navigators accepting, even needing to accept their mutations, but her story is the exact opposite, and she is infinitely self-conscious about her hands, wearing the finest, foam-added gloves she can buy, so that no one can see or feel them. She will be the first to tell you EXACTLY what she is, but her job demands such an appearance. She lounges in next to nothing, as some other crew members have learned, when invited to help her develop social interaction skills (it's less obviously sexual than that, in fact; it's as much to make the other person uncomfortable, so that they find it harder to lie on the spot, and give that feeling of being the in charge person) and is in a serious relationship with a crew mate (rare time it went further than really uncomfortable), and he has NEVER seen her without the gloves. Her other always accessory is her tiara. When she was little, her father's plan to have her seem totally normal was already in effect, and the tiara was a gift from the Magos Biologis who were helping with Project Radiance. Effectively, it looks like a fine, golden, even potentially gaudy circlet that any aspiring noble girl would love to keep as a status symbol. The truth of it, however, is that, in the front, it has an iris shutter, that when open, allows her to use her warp eye, either offensively or, much more likely, to navigate the Passage of Judgment to its next locale. Still, when she enters a room in fine dresses, elegant gloves, and a near-crown the Emperor's daughter might like to have had, if he could've been bothered to plan ahead, she makes the point when she goes to play.

I have yet to make a true villain, so no awesome, spike-encrusted badasses, or sorcerers with moving robes, sorry. I have a handful of other characters, like Krueger with his high-end carapace armor, best-quality officer's uniform, and a pair of power fists almost ridiculous enough for Calgar to lodge a stolen items report, but that's about it.

I think the Ordo Formo would take over soon after. Perhaps with their Fashion Astartes in support.

Rogue Trader fashion:

1 part military, 2 parts gauche, and 7 parts obnoxiously fabulous.

Our RT served 20 years in the IG before unexplectedly becoming a RT. His formalwear is similar to a Lord General's uniform with several 'trophy's' taken from his enemies and a Best skinsuit/Footfall Voidsuit under it. His trophies are only from those he has personally slain in combat and include a Lictor claw on one shoulder, a Rak'Gol faceplate on the other, a Chaos Marine faceplate as a kneepad, Korad Vall's shotpistol in his sash, and several claws taken from different Dark Eldar Haemonoculus gauntlets making the catch to his belt. In addition he allways carries several custom microweapons and his sevice Plasma Pistol from his time in the IG. He is never without a Jokero Field and Best Conversion Field generator as well.

In battle he wears a set of Consecrated Artifacer Armor retrieved from the most holy wreckage of the Tomb of Saint Congitious and wields several customized twin-linked, Integrated weapons (Condemor boltguns or Techxorcist rifles depending on his likely opponents). His personally designed filament grenades are another favored weapon he carries into battle.

Recently they defeated an Ork with an amazing hat that mounts its own shields and laser batteries. He is presently looking at converting it to use as a portable shade/firepoint for his excursions. As with most of his custom weapons he is doing the work himself, having been an Arch-Heretek for most of his career.

My guy is a soldier of fortune from a frontier world in the expanse populated by the abandoned descendants of quasi-legal mining corporation, when he's not kitted up in either carapace or his selenite voidsuit he tends to either wear one of two outfits. The first consists of workboots, baggy infantry trousers, a wifebeater and if planetside an overshirt, sunglasses and akubra style hat.

The second outfit I've chosen to describe to the group as "like something Austin Powers would wear if he made Admiral but with even more lace" and left most of the details up to their imaginations, the point being that it's an outfit he wears when trying to fit in with the rich, cultured and powerful which in reality only betrays that he's a clueless uncouth new money bumkin when it comes to Imperial society.

Red robes, grotesque facial mask, red hood and roaring Eviscerator. Missionary, redemptionist style! For armour he has a brazen carapace chest guard and shin guards. He has a pendant with a depiction of the emperor on dangling from his left arm. He also has a ring signifying he is from the Calvinists(redemptionist group led by John Calvin). All his clothes are stained with blood as he never bothers to clean, sure I love it but our GM makes sure that it causes negatives to our perception and sneaking. Though he gave me fear(2). Mask and hell I'm from the redemption!

While playing an Explorator generally is pretty fun, although the Adeptus Mechanicus tend to a bit... behind in the fashion department. Magos Explorator Sonitus Horologiis kept the red robes of his office immaculate, and his implants adhered to a red and gunmetal theme, for consistency. However, he did have some ceremonial robes, red silk with inlaid gold decorative circuitry, as well as a large, ornate staff with the Mechanicus emblem. He was working on getting ceremonial robes where the inlaid circuitry was acutally functional as a force field.
