deception question

By pashacordaro420, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

i have question and asked my gm can i use deception in combat to distract my target and attack for extra damage or add a quality. our gm fhought it interesting and but not sure how to handle we thought to add disorient 1 or is there something that would fit better we'd like to know what everyone thinks

My take would be roll a deception check against the targets displine check with 2 (1 if your GM is nice, I'm usually not) setback dice for being in combat. I'd reduce the setback to 0 if this is a before combat action. My reasoing is, while in combat, your target has his/her adrenaline going (or alien equivalent) and has heightened awareness to things trying to do him/her harm. With a droid opponent, I'd say it's overcolocking it's droid brain to process sensor data for potential threats, hence the setback dice. I would allow this to be a maneuver activity and upon success allow yourself and your allies to gain a boost die to attack until the targets next turn. Personally, I wouldn't go for the disorient quality unless you had 3+ advantage or a Triumph, though I'm sure you could find better uses for a Triumph.

I don't think you could use Deception to do damage, but I don't see why you couldn't use it in lieu of a combat roll, and pass on any advantages or triumphs you might gain, regardless of success or failure. Maybe success means you give the target a setback on their next check.

I think a good use would be to trick enemies into shifting fire away from players thinking there is a threat in another location where there actually isn't. A tactical version of the what the Ghost Army was in WW2. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghost_Army

The skill description states "Any time a character wishes to distract an opponent through guile - even within the context of physical confrontation - he may use Deception."

So I'd definitely say yes.

I'd also say it's situation dependent.

If you're doing the old "Look over there!" and then punching someone when he looks, I might just use the Deception vs Discipline roll as the Attack roll. (Of course this is only going to work once on any opponent.)

If you're tossing something behind the three Stormtroopers to distract them, then maybe success means that they waste their shots firing in that direction this round. Any Advantages, Threats, etc., can be spent as normal on the combat chart.

Bottom line is I would totally allow it, but I wouldn't allow the same tricks to be used over and over again.

yea even understandable not many would fall for it twice it maybe interesting to try

The first thing that popped into my head when I read this was throwing a fake grenade using the Deception skill to force (or trick) enemies to break cover. A successful check would remove any ranged defence granted for cover from a number of enemies equal to the number of successes, while advantage could give boost dice to other PCs for having the targets run into the open.
