What ship do I buy tomorrow?

By BCooper85, in X-Wing

Hey guys,

So my bro and I now have one core set along with another X-wing and two more TIE's. I've just ordered another core set tonight so we have more dice and tokens along with the extra ships so in total that's six TIE's and three X's.

Now, I'm going to a model shop tomorrow with a buddy that's got into X-wing and they have most ships there, my question is if I wanted to buy one more what should I get that would suit the X-wings?

I'm liking the idea of of B-wing but wanted more opinions.

What do you play mostly?

Imperials? Pick up imperial aces, great ships!

You almost need 1 of each ship to get all of the upgrades and what have you but 1 of each ship for a specific faction should do well for you too.

I'm rebel all the way! Chris and I wanted to take our time learning the game before mixing things up but I've played more times than him so think I'm ready to expand.

Seriously, I agree with Glentopher - a Y-Wing adds a lot of utility. Tough as old boots, and ion turrets can be good fun (for you)

Y-Wing and maybe even a YT-1300. Chewbacca is the best ship in the game.

A YT-1300 will have to wait, after another ship that'll be £25 this month which is just about in my budget.

Surprised by the Y-wing love! Thought alot of people would go with a B-wing as most game vids I've seen include them.

Here's my new player 'what to buy advice':

For rebels: I would get a B-Wing (22-29pts) or two to start. The HWK-290 is meant as a support ship (and will be underwhelming to just randomly pick up). I would probably stay away from the Falcon to start - if you use it it will be a major part of your squad (~42-46pts) and the 360degree turret can skew the game for newer players (it will feel overpowered to start). A-Wings (17-27pts) and Y-Wings (18-25pts) are both OK.
For Imperials: Imperial Aces. It comes with 2 TIE Interceptors (18-27pts ea) and a LOT of fighter-related upgrades (that you can use for both sides). The Firespray (Slave I) is a good addition (33-38pts) as well and the TIE Interceptor packs are also good (but the upgrades that come with the single Interceptor blisters aren't really the best). To start, I would stay away from: TIE Advanced (very overcosted, underwhelming to play with), Lambda Shuttle (support ship), and TIE Bombers (they're good if you have 3-4 since they synergize, but not good alone).
If you get 2 B-Wings and Imperial Aces, then you can have 3-4 B&X-Wings vs 5-6 TIE Fighter/Interceptors which should be a fairly even match and fun to do. These would also be tournament ready builds, simple enough to learn and play with new folks, and you can build easily from there.

Agreed with most of this.

Stay away from the Falcon. It's an abomination and will totally skew the game for newer players. Too easy, comparatively too powerful, requires consideration how to play against it.

The Lambda is VERY GOOD. It can do everything most people want. Support, heavy fire, etc. Jendon giving target locks ot everyone before the fight even starts is gravy with the ST title.

Or just put a Heavy Laser Cannon on it. Total fun.

That tied with a single Bomber for Jonus to reroll HLC or even just a regular bomber that gets it target lock from Jendon is AMAZING. You can fire your missile with the Focus left.

That said.. I'd go with what he said. 2Bs, and Imp Aces. Or if thats too expensive: 1B and The Interceptor.

Follow this pairing to equal out both sides with purchases (since you are building both sides at the same time):

Firespray/Falcon

Y-wing/Tie Bomber

Tie Interceptor/Awing

B-wing/Lambda

Get another x-wing so you can run a 4 x wing list! :)

I can always use the X-wing from my mates core set which would bump me up to four when our second core set if delivered so don't feel the need to any more X's at the moment.

I'm torn between a Y and a B now!

CR-90....

Definitely a Y-wing. The turret, Astromechs and lastability, plus they just look cool. :)

The B-Wing is an amazing ship.... HOWEVER to fully enhance it you need other expansions, due to the cards that come with them. You need the Slave-1 for the Heavy Laser Cannon, and you need the Lambda for Advanced Sensors. These are the two best upgrades for it.

Additionally, to really maximize the best pilot, Ibtisam, you also need a millineum falcon for Engine Upgrade, and an A-Wing (Or Imperial Aces) for Push the Limit. Granted with all these upgrades you'd have a ridiculously expensive B Wing, but it would be a godly ship.

I quite disagree with this setup. All you need to make the B-Wing a true menace is 'Sensor Jammer'. It's an incredible card and has saved me time and time again. Last night my opponent had to do about 20 damage to one B-Wing to kill it. Best when used with a blocking strategy with some of your other ships.

Get the Tantive!

I got started just after wave 2 came out and was completely depleted, so had to wait a while. In the meantime I had a ton of fun adding a Y-wing and Tie Advanced (entirely for Vader) to the mix. The B is great, and quite deadly, but the Y is a fun tanky little ship, and having Darth will make the Imperials feel like they've got a good pilot in the mix too. He doesn't do a ton of damage, but is very versatile.

That said, it's hard to go wrong. The HWK is more of a support ship that's fun to add in, but more for when you've gotten a good handle on all the others. The aces and interceptors generally are great, Soontir in single interceptor pack being the other 9-skill pilot for the Imperials. They are really glass cannons which you have to play defensively in a very different way though, so I'd keep them on hold until you want to mix things up or want a different flanker than Backstabber. A-wings are fun too, but I'd get them along with interceptors. The Firespray is unique, fun to fly with its rear arc, but the YT is boring for me. The shuttles can be great, but are hard for planning out their maneuvers and kind of need the engine upgrade you get only with the YT.

This doesn't make sense to me. My understanding of sensor jammer is that the eyeball results generated by the upgrade can be changed back to hits by the attacker spending a focus token, the sequence of events being:

Attacker rolls dice

defender modifies attack dice (Sensor Jammer activates)

attacker modifies attack dice (Focus spent)

All ships have the focus ability, and focus is a popular action to begin with. The focus also has its normal effect on any other eyeballs rolled There is no drawback to simply focusing each turn you're facing a ship with sensor jammer.

Blocking ships would of course prevent focus actions and make this upgrade useful in those cases; but I am still skeptical of this upgrade's utility, especially given the cost.

Edit: what is your rationale?

I bought the Y-wing earlier on and my friend bought a Firespray.

Had a 100 point game where he had the Firespray, a TIE Advanced and an Interceptor and I had two X's(Luke and Wedge) along with Dutch in the Y. The Y went first(not knowing how to use him didn't help) but Wedge did all 3 ships on his own, everything he rolled was hits(with target locks helping).

Next will be another Y or a B, we shall see!
