Attack Squadrons : Abandoned

By Crabbok, in X-Wing

Just got this from Star Wars: Attack Squadrons -

We want to thank all of the fans who participated in the closed beta of Star Wars: Attack Squadrons.

After much consideration, we have decided to cease development so that we can focus on other Star Wars game experiences.

We truly appreciate the time you spent engaging in the beta.

Wow - that was nuts - It was a fairly polished game - just needed more content. I'm really surprised it is being killed.

I almost signed up yesterday. Lol

When I first saw videos from the game I decided never to play the game. Being a big fan of the classic X-wing and TIE Fighter games the game simply didn't have the right feel. So reading this gives me hope of something better in the future.

It was awful

It was bad. Could only play it once because it was so bad.

Bummer. I was hoping for a new Star Wars Flight sim...

If you don't mind the arcade feel, it was good. The sound was good and the graphics were very nice. Additionally it played in a browser which was good for a broader audience.

If you really prefer a more hard core space sim - then it was probably not your cup of tea. Star Citizen is probably a better option - though I'll admit Star Citizen seems intimidating to me - like it may have a bit of a learning curve and I'm unsure if I want to invest the time.

It was fun at first, but then it just became annoying. The lack of backups to upgrade your modules killed it for me. I don't know they were limited and you couldn't get anymore, so I ended up wasting a ton of them. Then no matter what, your stats weren't as good as other peoples. Then they cut the credits you'd get per game way down (like a tenth of the original amount). Then they released super expensive ships with no way to make money. To get a Firespray you'd have to play a few thousand games to save up. Nope. And half the time you'd red pawn and have someone locking onto you within about 2 seconds.

You realize all of that is just balancing right? And as far as the backups, there was a button to purchase them, but it was broken. So that really wasn't the problem. I agree with all of the complaints you have, but that's all beta related complaints. (Though it did bug me that I bought a 10k X wing on the first day I played, and then never could get enough money to buy another ship because they cut the rate back dramatically).

Problems that affected the core of the game were:

1) Speed of combat - Everything was wayy too slow, and everything responded so sluggishly

2) It wasn't true 3d... yes, there was a height component, but everything was oriented towards the ground - you could not roll or anything

3) Predictable maneuvers - lets see, you can continue flying, doing slow maneuvers, or you can break right/left, do a loop or a K turn... breaking right and left was really messed up so they were barely used... leaving you with a loop, k turn, or sluggish regular maneuvers

4) Scoring system - didn't really make any sense especially in scenario mode

5) Ordnance was useless, well against anyone that knew what he/she was doing... it was way too easy to break/k turn at the right time to avoid it... and then there was a LOOOONNNGGGG cool down

6) Energy made no sense... I mean, it does to some extent, but for it to take 50% of my energy to break left/right or 50% to K turn really doesn't seem right... heck, I can sustain boosting at max speed longer than I can turning sharply. It didn't really seem like there was an energy management skill to the game, just a "oh you ran out, stop doing what you were doing" aspect since normally you wouldn't ever get close to low. It also discouraged you from boosting to find people to kill.

And then there was the general lack of content / people, but that was more the problem of it being beta than anything else. But they had a long way to go in order to make it a viable game.

they just need to take xwing alliance and make it in todays online modes, that game was AWESOME, kinda wish I still had it.

Just install the original and use Hamachi and the TCP/IP connection, you can have up to 8 Players.

I know it was a beta, but it really was bad. When I tested it out I mapped all the controls to my gamepad two or three times. It was then that I realized that the game wouldn't save your custom mappings :(

This shows that Disney has some quality control, and would rather put down a bad product than have it effect the Star Wars brand. This is a really good thing. If this had gone through we'd have been stuck with a really poor game and probably would never have gotten another space combat game, so as not to have competing products.

Now at least there's hope for a decent and polished space combat game down the road. Eventually.

This is just a matter of an inexperienced development house taking on something way too big for them. It was obvious right from the beginning.

You make a very good point about quality control. Though I'm a little sad that some people probably lost their jobs today.
