Modifications and huge ships

By Viceroy Bolda, in X-Wing

So, looking over the rules for huge ships it says that "Any ship may equip a modification or title unless the card is restrictedto a specific type of ship."

So, it seems legal to me that stealth device could be equipped on huge ships.

GR75 with Stealth device and Bright Hope might be difficult to kill, and darn near impossible to hit at range 3 or through an asteroid, or both!

You can only reinforce 1 section at a time, and if you put a stealth device on the Bright Hope GR75 I'm just going to come at you from the side and attack whichever side you didn't reinforce... Good luck with your 1 or 2 defense dice...

Yes hitting Bright Hope head on while reinforced and with a stealth device at range 3 is going to be tough to hit, but not too bad. All it will do is make me not do that, and switch my tactics a little bit, then your stealth device will be gone in no time. Might be able to spend those 3 points better :)

The rules for the Huge ships say that you can only use modifications that are labeled Huge Ship Only. Right now the only Mod you can use is the Combat Refit that comes with the Transport, and that on the Transport only.

So no stealth devices, shield/hull upgrades, engine upgrade, ect...

In the huge ship rules, which supercede the standard rules, it says you can only equip Huge Ship Only modifications. Currently there is only Combat Refit that is specific to the GR75 only.\\

Edit: I should read further before posting.

The rule which I quoted above was taken directly from the rule book included with the CR90. It clearly says "any ship."

The rulebook also states that rules in other supplements and cards supercede the rules listed in the core rules. They have already eliminated it from possibility in the huge rules.

Not sure what that rule says exactly, I don't have the booklet with me. But his is from the Huge Ship Rules PDF.

True, the core set rules do say that supplemental rules supercede those therein. Since the CR90 is the most recent issue of rules, I argue that they are therefore the most current version to follow. I quote those most recent rules which supercede those previously issued. Please see the rulebook addendum accompanying the Tantive IV expansion pack, page seven, second column, New Upgrade Cards section, Paragraph 1, Modifications and Titles. " Any ship may equip a modification or title unless the card is restricted to a specific type of ship ."

Paragraph three of this same section describes "Huge Ship Only" upgrades and says that these upgrades are restricted to huge ships and may not therefor be used by small and large ships. It does not, however, that huge ships are limited to "Huge Ship Only" modifications.

These paragraphs in essence says the following:

Huge Ship Only -> Only huge ships (ship restricted)

YT1300 Only -> Only YT1300 (ship restricted)

Anti-Pursuit Lasers -> Large ship only (ship restricted, not permitted on small or huge ships)

Modification card -> Not otherwise restricted

Nowhere does it say that huge ships can only accept "Huge Ship Only" upgrades.

Can someone quote rules which say otherwise?

Got a link? Did the PDF come out before or after the CR90 Rulebook?

Setting aside that putting Stealth on a huge ship is quite ridiculously then the Huge Ships rules as VanorDM quotes are here :

Page 4:

"Modifications: Huge ships can equip only modifications that are labeled “Huge Ship only .

This is also printed on page 7 in the CR-90 rulebook:

So either you're reading/misquoting it OR you have a misprinted booklet :-)

Thank you. This is exactly what I wanted.

What you have there is the generic rules for Modifications. But those are superseded by the rules regarding Huge ships and modifications.

I wonder why they did that. None of the modifications are very powerful on huge ships.

Edit : Boost shouldn't work, so engine upgrade would be dumb.

I wonder that too. But they kind-of have shield, hull, and engine upgrades in the Huge only upgrades under different names.

Combat retrofit is labeled: "GR-75 only. Huge Ship only."

After reading that for the first time I thought that "huge ship only" were redundant. It is not. Without, you could not use the modification at all.

The reason for the huge ship only modifications is two fold. One reasons is Engine Upgrade - it would be totally broken for huge ships. The other reason is for future modifications.

Would you really want any future small ship mods to be limited in power because of how they might affect huge ships? Maybe they someday make a mod that allows you to barrel roll..... but then they can't because it would totally break the huge ships.

Bascically, huge ships and large/small ships have two separate kinds of modification upgrade slots . Both use the name "modification" and the same icon on the back of the card. But they are completely different.
