Clone-era Y-Wing?

By stuffedskullcat, in X-Wing

Hi all,

I was wondering if any of you wonderfully talented modders have tried "filling in" a Y-Wing to make a clone-era version? I have a bunch of ships, but due to time and a hesitance to dip my toe in the pool, I've yet to play, but I am doing some repaints and modding.

I love what some of you are doing with plasticard, but I was thinking of using green stuff as I'm a bit more proficient with it.

Any previous attempts out there? Couldn't find anything in the forums.

I like this model so much I bought the Hasbro and Lego versions, both of which are great quality and highly recommended.

try "shapeways" i think "Grosnic" makes one... hes on here pretty often...

I prefer the original Y-wing in Complete Cross Sections. Looks like the rebel one but with the panels on.

It's quite possible that was the version in between this one and the one in the movies.

According to this the Micro Machine Titanium model is already about the right scale. You should track one down and use it in your friendly games!

No please, stay only in the Original Trilogy, and don't mix with the Republic or Separatist ships, greettings.

It's the same ship... Perhaps an earlier version, but the same ship. As for why it looks different - the mechanics got sick and tired of always having to remove the hull plating to fix the old Y wings that were constantly falling apart, so they just left the plating off. It's be sorta analogous to someone removing the hood and body panels of a car... Same car, just looks totally different. But easier to access everything.

I still prefer them naked.

I like the concept of the OT Y-Wing being the stripped down version of what we see in the CW-era.

While I'm not a big fan of the Prequels, I'm not trying to pretend that those stories - and the imagery from them - is not part of the SWU (or the SWU-according-to-me). In fact, I rather like the notion of the Rebel Alliance having to hodge-podge together fighters from whereever they can get them, even if they're old CW-era clunkers like the Y-Wing (or, for that matter, the ARC-170, which I quite like the look of).

That said, old clunkers need to be old clunkers. I think it'd be a great mod job to try to put the panels back on the Y-Wing, but I prefer the look of the stripped-down version.

Y-wing with panels on. Better or worse than the CW one? I guess that's just personal preference.

Maybe starfighter fashion changed between the period when they were producing the BTL-B during the Clone Wars, and the BTL-A4 or -S3, which came later. Also, I'm guessing that the -A4/S3 offers less profile to hit.

Preferences.... I'll stick with the -A4/S3

Much as I'm an old school Star Wars fan, I gotta say the Clone Wars Y-wing has grown on me a lot. I think this would be a good ship. All that extra armor would probably be good for an extra hull or two, plus the extra ordinance space could be represented by an extra torpedo or missile slot, or maybe even a bomb. In exchange, less maneuverability overall in the maneuver dial.

Check shapeways.. there is one there.. I got one, but really haven't done much with it...

I like the CW version because it actually looks like sleek armor plating, the red one pictured above just looks too similar to me. Additionally, as much as I like the regular Y-wing I can't justify taking ARMOR PLATING off a starfighter. It makes me wonder what kind of hull rating the BTL Y-wing would have in game.

My biggest problem with the non-trilogy stuff is that the older stuff looks SO much slicker and more modern that it sort of looks a bit backwards.

Love the original trilogy stuff... Most of the other stuff, not as much.

The justification comes from needing an attack fighter, not a bomber. The Alliance couldn't afford to buy the torpedoes they would need to fill the racks on the fully armored Y-wing, and they needed a tougher and more offensive fighter than the Z-95. So they took off the armor panels and shortened the engines to give the Y-wing a speed and maneuverability boost, losing their long-range strike capability and extra torpedo racks in the process. The long range wasn't necessary because the Alliance did quick hit'n'fade missions in the beginning and the extra torpedo racks were unnecessary because there weren't enough torpedoes to fill them.

Worse. They weren't even trying with this one. At least with the Clone Wars version they made a good effort at showing the Y-Wing at it's prime, so when you consider it stripped down you can see just how far the design has fallen from it's grand roots as an elegant fighter.

Now it's used, beat up, and not majestic anymore.

The cross-section one says "meh whatever" by comparison.

It's not armor, it's panelling. Probably has some slight protective value but not much. The in-universe reason behind it being left off is the Y-wing is so maintenance heavy that the techs got sick of constantly removing and replacing the panels and just left them off. It's the equivalent of only putting two of the four screws into a hatch you constantly have to open.

I don't really like the shape, sorta graceless, but I can imagine it growing on me.

Much MUCH better looking.

I'll take a squadron or two thanks

Im the reverse, liked it when I first saw it but the more I look at it the less I like it.

Also the way I see it, the hull panels give it more places for maneuvering thrusters and better airodynamics in an atmosphere.

So a dial closer to an x-wing or z-95.

I wonder... what would an X-wing or A-wing look like with its paneling stripped like the Y-wing?
