Tantive IV Moveable Turrets

By steelhelix, in X-Wing

Okay, random question... I know, I'll have mine in hand tomorrow, but I just want to know...

Do the turrets and sensor dish move on the model or are they fixed?

They rotate on the base, but the lasers themselves dont appear to move, and I dont want to force them, lol.

While we're talking about parts, how does the range ruler work? It looks like two range 3 rules overlapping, but will I be able to disassemble the parts to store it? A single range 5 ruled would be way too long for storage.

It is hinged using the plastic hinges that the movement dials use.

There are two holes -

One allowws it to fold up to a normal size, using both locks it out to range 5.

Does the removable hinge separate easily?

Picture incoming.

In the picture - it is assembled incorrectly.

For it to be correct and extend / collapse, you use the first hole, you will see what I mean.

I realized when taking the picture that I put it together wrong.

I think he was asking how easy it is to remove the second movement dial hinge on the 2 line when you want to fold it back into storage mode.

Difficult.

I just had to do it to re-assemble it, it's going to bend the cardboard an eventually ruin it.

I will be buying acrylic versions ASAP.

Honestly, the folding mechanism is poorly designed considering its cardboard and those dial hinges lock down tight. A better answer might be to use very thick tape and just fold the two halves over on themselves when in storage mode.

I think presently I will use only the swiveling hinge and not ever fully lock it out.

I see, that is disappointing. I may just poke a hole right over the "3" so I can swivel it between range 3 and range 5 length.

I was just thinking about doing this myself. Right now it's an awkward range 3.5 - 3.75 when hinged at the correct location.

To be fair, I'm not entirely sure it's designed to fold. I think it's intended to just go together and stay that way.

I think it will work better if you don't use both parts of the "lock" piece - if you just use the female piece it will hold it together just fine, and isn't nearly as hard to pull apart. That may change with wear over time, but at least on the first pass it seems to work OK

Yeah, I was planning on only using the thick part of the hinge in as needed, then you can just turn one of the range rulers around to store.

seems like some epoxy and 2 small neodymium magnets are called for here.

That range ruler does not seem promising at all.

My default thinking is about transportability (I commute on a bicycle), for which even our standard 3-length is a little annoying to safely store in the backpack. But I guess that if I get this thing, I'll probably not be transporting it by bicycle to begin with. ^_^

How long 'till the acrylics are available, do you guys think?

I am surprised that someone isn't selling acrylic range 5 finders already. I hope they get those and the maneuver templates come out soon. I don't have a lot of confidence in the movement ruler not wearing out pretty quick either.

Adam (Applied Perspective) and I have a workable design for a nice range 5 ruler. I think he's working on cutting a sample and putting it up on his page. I also sent over a huge ship template design, an energy, a reenforce and cloak token designs. Hopefully that should all be available soonish.

A quick note on the cardboard rage 5 components: they are not full range 3 rulers on their own, they are a bit short. They are a full range 5 when put together normally, but not useful to measure range 3.

Interesting fact from my newly Acquired Corellian Corvette. The movable pieces are easily detachable and reattachable. Makes Transport much much easier.

I've been quite happy with the AP stuff I've gotten thus far. Rather looking forward to seeing this, and I'll certainly be buying a set.
