What do you use to store your ships?

By Mud Turkey 13, in X-Wing

This game has single-handedly kept the tacklebox and toolbox industry alive...

I made a little card caddie for the massive number of upgrades.

How did you manufacture that? 3D-printing?

I presume, if I had stuff I would do that too. Can't wait to have a spare $3k for one too, going to have to calculate how many pieces of stuff to cover cost ;)

Battlefoam Sword bag. I made custom tray layouts on their website tool, so that I have imperial and rebel ships in separate trays. That way, when I outgrow the single bag, I buy a second one and have one Imperial bag, and one Rebel bag. Currently have my entire fleet in one, plus a tray cut for accessories, plus a pluck tray.

Can anyone with Battlefoam post some photos? I'd really like to see storage with them.

Two Plano 732 cases for me. One Imperial and one Rebel, though I store one Transport in each. Looks like I'll have enough room to fit my planned Wave 4 ships in but after that I may have to add a third. Yes, I have a lot of ships...

I bought a tackle box the works pretty well for storing my ships

I use to have just a plain old bead/craft organizer. It was a 4 by 5 case that one space held a B wing. One of the spaces was two combined.

I was able to fit all my small ships in there (see below). I doubled up most of them. Two X's, Interceptors, Bombers, Bs and As shared a spot, Ys and I even had some space to spare.

I upgraded to a 1363 Plano which had some taller containers. I am able to keep all my ships on their bases right now and the transport has a spot. With wave 4 though I will need to take a few off their bases to make room. If you don't mind ships sharing a space the 1363 should be able to hold 2-3 times what my current collection consists of.

I know I only have 2 big ships and 8 small ones on the Imperial side but am I crazy for storing them loose in the bottom of the Slave One packaging? Hasn't been a problem so far but how fragile are they really?

FYI, you can get a 3D printer for a lot cheaper than that. As low as ~500$ if you source everything your self. And ~800$ or so, maybe even 700$, for a DIY kit. Fully assembled probably around 1000$.

Probably closer to $1000 for the DIY kit, and add $200-400 for having them build it for you (if offered). Out of the box solutions are around $2000. I bought a kit last year, and it's definitely been a learning experience. Price varies on the size of the build area, as well as where you get the kit/parts from.

Or if you have access to a 3d printer already (through school ect.)...

....print your own printer.

Shut me down! Machines building machines. How perverse.

Anyone in New Zealand can try a Warrior brand compartment box from one of those 'mega' sized orange hardware stores. I got one that was only $10 and holds all my small ships (at this stage) on their bases, dice and templates. I also got a small square carry case ($12) that fits the two large ships I have (in their blisters), and all the cards and tokens are in a smaller tackle box inside that. Job done, two carry cases. Easy transport and storage, and nothing is getting knocked around.

Here's a link to an old pic. I've added another seven ships and cut foam to protect them since then.

Invest in a case soon. The paint jobs will suffer terribly after a while. Find a small tackle box to fit the small ships at least.

:(

I use the Plano 3952 double sided tackle box. I have one side for Rebels and the other, Imperials. The top section on one side is dedicated to all the tokens I use often. The other side has the stuff that I don't use very much.

LaserTouch make a fantastic bag for xwing miniatures. The trays are all custom cut to fit a variety of ships and there is plenty of storage for cards, dials, stands etc.

Well worth a look IMO.

I use the Really Usefull Boxes 4ltr size with their craft inserts, each tray has 12 square compartments fits all the smack ships and then place the top tray insert which houses the bases, cards etc

Alright figured that'd be the response but wasn't sure how necessary all these cases everyone suggests are. Thanks!

Complete DIY kit from a well known supplier : 650$ (on special for 570$ at the moment)

All that's missing is an ATX power supply (find an old computer and take it out) and the glass for the print bed.

Prices have dropped a lot in the last couple years :D

Any stores sell the kind of foam used by battlefoam or something similair? I want something for my transport and corvette and I can do a good job cutting it myself I believe.

No mention of kr multicase? I love my kr's. I'm waiting for the new huge ship trays before I drop money on a third one. :)

Already have an imperial box and a rebel box. Third will be for huge ships and my asteroids. They do a variety of bags and hard shell cases to fit their multicase system in.

The real beauty for me, is storing all the small ships fully assembled. Means rapid setup.
