Upgrades You Never Use - Deadeye

By SableGryphon, in X-Wing

I'm not sure if this is actually a good idea, but there's nothing preventing you from using TL to reroll hits, right?

You could load Flechettes+Failsafe+Deadeye, rig a way to get Focus+TL simultaneously(Dreis/Dutch/etc), then have a reasonably controllable stress-on-a-string for 4 points of upgrades.

"The attacker must have a target lock on the defender to use Homing Missiles, but the target lock is not spent in order to perform the attack."

I dont think deadeye can be used. the card says "spend a target lock" Homing Missiles dont need you to spend spend anything just to have a target lock

help me if im wrong

That's what I mean by split in two parts. There's two qualifiers:

First:

Does [upgrade card] have the text Attack (Target Lock): meaning that to attack you require a TL? If so, you may read it as Attack (Focus): instead, meaning that you now require either a TL or a Focus in order to perform that attack.

Second:

Whenever an attack requires you to spend a TL, you may spend a focus token instead.

It's not necessary for both qualifiers to be true in order to function, they function seperately.

Homing Missiles (or Ion Pulse Missiles) has the first qualifier and so Deadeye functions.

thanks after reading the FAQ's the other day i was'nt sure

Deadeye Farlander is going to be nice as well.

Does Deadeye interact with Han Solo Crew?

I know the current reading is that Deadeye requires both parts of the text to be true, but considering R7-T1 who grants you a boost regardless of taking a TL I'm starting to doubt that.

Not directly, but it can be useful.

If you have TL + Focus on a craft with a ordnance and deadeye, you could now spend your focus token instead of your TL, then roll the dice. If you have blanks, you use your TL normally, otherwise if you have a lot of eyes you use Han and spend that TL to shift the eyes to hits.

Having recently played against Wes Jenson, target locks basically tell the opponent who you want to shoot. Jenson than just picks the ship with the best shot and takes the target lock away. Deadeye could make Jenson's choice a lot harder and missiles easier. Unfortunately, no generic bomber can take Deadeye.

Actually, next time I play I want to experiment with this little ditty:

Boba Fett + Slave 1 + Deadeye + Recon Specialist + Adv. Proton Torpedoes (+ Concussion Missiles if one feels so inclined)

Points: 48 (52)

Rules question on homing missile and deadeye. The rules text on deadeye says "spend target lock", but homing missiles doesn't spend it, you just have to have target lock. So how does these two cards interact?

Well there are two parts to deadeye. The FIRST part is the part that allows it to work with Homing Missile.

You may treat the [Attack Target Lock] header as [Attack Focus].

The second part, which deals with spending the tokens, is not important for the homing missile.

Yeah, there's something to be played around with on an expanded Farlander.

Especially if we can figure out what Kyle crew does.

Unfortunately, no generic bomber can take Deadeye.

Which really kinda makes you wonder why they made it. It seems like the optimal use of Deadeye is to allow low PS ships a chance to fire ordnance off when they couldn't TL after moving. But then, none of the low ones have EPTs, except I think some A-Wing.

Do not forget that if things go sideways, your Deadeye ship has a focus and can use it defensively. You give up shooting your ordnance, but that might keep you alive to try again later. Additionally, there are more options for focus passing than there are for target lock passing. You could have your Green Squadron take an evade or boost into range, making the enemy think he cannot fire his missile this turn, only for Garven to pass him a focus in the combat phase. Or do the same thing after the Green K-turns.

The generic A-wing with an EPT is the Green Squadron Pilot. Guess which expansion pack includes Deadeye? ^_^

I always read this that you CAN use the Focus to launch the Homing Missile while keeping the Focus token.

Deadeye is great because nobody knows who you'll be unloading on. It works best with Recon Spec, but I honestly wish Ordnance could be fired by spending a focus or having a Target Lock... Would fix so many of my issues.
