For those with the Tantive IV - What are the missions included?

By eagletsi111, in X-Wing

Another thing to note is that the mission don't give you a full list (aside from the first) but give you someone to base the squad around. 2B for example uses Jonus with Squad Leader and Proton Bombs as a start with 100 extra points to spend. It's not too gimmicky nor requires anything absurd like 3 GR-75s.

And FFG is nowhere near greedy. GW takes the trophy in that category. Yearly price hikes on top of already absurd prices. 75 bucks for the base rules? I have models that I bought 5 years ago that have gone up by $20 or more. Only difference is the box art. For those whom X-Wing is there first foray into tabletop gaming, you have no idea how good you have it. Both in game, cost and community.

As to the second point, it requires multiple copies of specific ships.

Which ones, other than the 6 TIE Fighters that every swarm player has?

As stated before, unless you are a brand new player you probably already have everything you need to play one side or the other. Anything else can easily be proxied. Nobody is "forcing" you to buy anything. "Suggesting", perhaps...

Are you claiming every player's a swarm player?

In all of FFG' previous scenarios they've used the squad building rules to accommodate everyone. With Tantive, it demands a specific set of expansions: if you don't have them or don't want them, you can't substitute out without houseruling the missions. I hate that. Why?

Do I think it is also an attempt sell more units? Definitely, at least to some degree. But I don't think that is the only purpose.

...because it feels like they're doing that. They didn't need to lock the lists when writing Hoth, why do they need to now?

I don't like it, I don't like it at all, and I hope it's not a sign of things to come. Missons 1-7 and Hoth Evac are the sort of approach I want to see, Point of No Return and Mission 8 worry me.

No. Are you claiming every player is going to buy the Tantive?

While I understand your point, I don't think it is as horrible as you are making it out to be. The huge ships are rather obviously aimed at players who have already made a substantial investment in the game, and will probably already have everything needed. And for those who don't have it all, I will say (for the third time) that the needed materials can be easily proxied.

You don't like it, we get it. But to label FFG as a "greedy" company is taking it a bit far.

It seems reasonable and kinda expected that they would list expansions needed to play missions against a 100+ cost ship. After all there would be no way to have a balanced fight of CR90 vs Core set.

I would rather see them listing some of the older expansions than two or three CR90s and/or transports needed for play...

Hoth Evac, Cutting the Cord, pretty much all the other missions had x points to spend on ships. Tantive's campaign has fixed lists and thus demands that in order to play the missions as written you must buy pretty much everything else multiple times.

You could just play the missions without using their prescribed list, couldn't you? But really, how many people are going to buy a corvette that don't have most of the other ships on offer?

It looks like the missions were designed for specific Imperial lists. So no. Not without changing the rules.

As to the second point, it requires multiple copies of specific ships.

FFG is trying to create something new here with the Cinematic play mode and campaign-based mission stories. I for one applaud their efforts, and after playing through a few of them I can say that I like the direction they are taking. I don't think it is unreasonable to assume that some of these advanced scenarios will require something beyond just a core set and one or two expansions

Never said you should only need the core. What I dislike is the prescribed lists. The pattern their other scenarios use is point-based. Yes, you need more than the base ships to play it, but which ships is up to you. Tantive's campaign forces you to buy the exact set of ships the campaign wants rather than letting you use what you have (provided there's enough points of it) like the other Missions do. Saps it of replayability relative to Hoth or Cord and, even though it was likely not FFG's intention, leaves the bitter taste of requiring another £180 of specific ships to play the stuff.

What I'd like to know is why are you so upset about this? It's a game you take home and can do whatever you want this. You can make up your own house rules and develop your own stories or missions. You're putting this game in a tiny box when there's a million things you can do with it. These missions they have included are more like Guidelines (to poorly quote pirates of the Caribbean). Don't feel like you are cornered into buying more than you want....bring to the table what you have and see what works. Once you start forcing this game into a box, you'll find no joy in it at all...the reality of this game is the potential is exponential.

I like prescribed lists because it means more time playing and less time prepping, which is nice with these scenarios. No one is preventing you from tweaking the lists.

Let's be honest here and call a spade a spade. I don't have the stats but I assume that easily 99% if not 100% of people bought the tantive didn't buy it as there first purchase. Also I assume that they figured since someone is shelling out 90 some dollars for a single model that they are used to spending money and can find opponents who are used to it as well. Honestly the number of imperial players who don't have 6 ties is probably so astronomically low they didn't bother catering to them.

Required expansions? Ew FFG. Ew.

I hope this isn't how they mean to go on. Hoth Evac is a masterpiece. This... I don't know what to make of this.

True. Why required expansions and not simply a squad point cost? Marketing. Forcing people to buy certain things to play. It's pure greed, they charge a ridiculous enough price for the ships as it is.

As for the CR-90 itself, a player can only field one of them in an epic game, so there's no need to buy a second. The Gr-75 does come with a mission that requires 3 transports, but that's not part of the campaign missions, none of which have any expansion requirements. After using both ships I can easily see the use for 2 transports, filling very different roles, but the corvette isn't nearly as flexible or cost effective for mulipiles.

Required expansions? Ew FFG. Ew.

Anyone who's invested in the game enough to have the corvette probably has most, if not all, of the expansions.

I just got my tantive today, and didn't even think about the prescribed list requirements. I've just dropped £60 on a model - I already have at least two of everything else. Hell, I'm mostly a rebel player, and I have 8 tie fighters. The tantive rrp is three times that of the core set. I think ffg can safely assume tantive customers have already invested in the system.

I for one wish they would actually ease off on trying to make every expansion a standalone thing. I have enough target lock and focus tokens to last millennia...
