thinking about F&D beta.

One interesting thing is that careers, not specializations, give you Force rating. Although it's not spelled out (that I know of), I'm assuming that F&D specializations all require FR 1 if you come to them from EotE or AoR.

You did not read that. I was never here...

If you don't start as one of these careers, you have to move through the Exile or Emergent to get the Force Rating needed to access the whole tree.

So, if I read this correctly, you can either:

  1. Start with a career that gives FR.
  2. Start as a career that lacks a FR, buy FSE (which gives FR 1) and then move into any spec you like.

Yes, there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run there's still time to change the road you're on.

Correct. Remember to its Beta so things might change.

Just in case people are worried about balance: These careers all start with Force Rating 1 but they only provide six (not eight) career skills and you only get three (not four) free skill points at character creation.

That's not actually true. You could theoretically have a non-Force User pick up any of the new specs.

The problem with them doing it is that they will not have a Force Rating, and therefore will not get any use out of the Force Sensitive talents (THAT'S why they put in all the explosion-y symbols in the FS talent trees).

If you don't start as one of these careers, you have to move through the Exile or Emergent to get the Force Rating needed to access the whole tree.

Possibly, which is why I'm going to wait for a ruling on this before adding them to my chargen :)

How does it handle getting a lightsaber?

The Basic Lightsaber has an affordable cost and is available for purchase?

Correct. Remember to its Beta so things might change.

But all of the F&D careers have FR1, right? So case #1 is all F&D characters and #2 is all Edge/Age characters?

Edit: ah, happy just answered that one.

Well, I hope so -- base model is comperable to a vibroaxe.

Quick question, Ive heard rules on Parry/Reflect, are there other talents give a lightsaber deflection/defensive qualities like in earlier books? Also when using the improved do you have to negate all the damage to redirect it?

From reddit:

Lightsaber skill is based on Brawn by default and can be adjusted to other attributes depending on the specializations you choose.

Equipment... the lightsaber now comes in several types - basic, double-bladed (aka staff), pike, shoto, and training saber. Lightsabers get all their own different attachments, mostly crystals, which adjust damage and crit ratings and which can be modded to add further things like more damage or a Burn rating.

Group selection is either a holocron, a ship, or a mentor.

Improved parry and reflect trigger off of threats and despairs generated on the attack role and are not contingent on you actually stopping all of the damage.

Haven't really read thru my copy yet (having too much fun chatting with fellow gamers to do so), but I must say that they've done some very interesting things with it. Getting to talk about some of the things with the guys that wrote it has been equally interesting.

And supreme reduces strain cost?

Could anyone with the book, ( Pirate I'm looking at you among others) elaborate upon the Group selection thing?

Mentor, holocron and ship, is this correct? What ship, 1 Holocron, what about the mentor? Some more info, some depth about this please ;)

Now that's a great tease.

2P51 confirmed earlier that the previous force powers are reprinted in F&D.

And supreme reduces strain cost?

If you don't make an attack in the previous round and are just defending and are just using the talents to defend it will only cost you one strain to use per use.

It lists a price in the book. This is not something that is going to be answered for you, at least not in Beta. To me it is really just going to depend on what kind of game you're running. Are they existing characters? Then I would think it becomes a session thing, or part of one at least. I don't even like shopping on Amazon for blasters, I won't like doing it for lightsabers anymore. If you are starting characters out, then I would think you could just say it was a Padawan, or Jedi leftover, or youngling on the run who always had it. Gonna be the GM and player putting their heads together and making a decision.

Yah, I just listed the new stuff. All the old ones are in there as well.

G-9 Rigger light freighter (or equivalent), Holocron effects up to GM, but as base will make one skill a career skill while holding it, and the mentor is... well, a mentor :) Think Obi-Wan or Splinter, but they should never take center stage.

I would expect stuff like that to be expanded on in the full CRB.

I wasn't very clear - when I said purchase I wasn't speaking narratively - I meant does it have a cost that was affordable for a starting character to "acquire" (however you want to narratively explain it)?

It still costs a few thousand, but its cheaper than the tricked-out placeholder from AoR and EotE.

Cant wait to see the artwork for the final product
