thinking about F&D beta.

By oriondean, in General Discussion

I would now like to hear from everyone about how this game will play with others. I know they said all can be seperate or played together. I would like to offer all 3 books as options in my game when I have them. Is f&d going to break the others?

I don't think so personally. Some worry about Lightsabers but my personal opinion is that between the Morality mechanic holding a Force Users feet to the fire and the squad rules, there are more than enough tools for a GM to create dangerous opponents and difficult scenarios for players. Just my opinion.

There are two Jedi fighters. The one Kenobi uses in Episode II and a two-seated (but unarmed) version of the same.

Cool.

Any mechanics on building lightsabers?

You can get the parts and make one.

So I played my F&D game ran my Kat Ostrander today. I am loving what they have done. Togruta are awesome. They Are the party's best friend.

For those of you concerned about morality. Wait until you read it and give it a chance. After the game I talked to Kat and she broke it down for me. There is some delicious narrative goodness to it.

I love how they balanced Lightsabers and pretty much made the Lightsabers we see in a AoR and F&D fully tricked out versions of the customizable ones from F&D.

We also expressed, our concerns and she was more than happy to discuss them. FFG has my confidence.

Morality is a set of positive (Strengths) and negative aspects (Weaknesses). You select a pair that your character struggles with, like Mercy/Apathy or Curiosity/Obsession. The struggle between them builds Conflict.

I was ambivalent about this mechanic at first. Now, I think I'm sold.

I like it better than Obligation or Duty.

I like it best of the 3 mechanics as well. I think it's simple and elegant.

Hmmm based on something I read you could make a force devoted cult that can't use the force but could still be a dangerous lot. Perhaps make the leader a force user and the rest non force users like that pseudo-cult we see in the Jedi Knight video game series Jedi Academy. I think that would give any party from EotE or AoR a bit of pause regardless of which way they were swinging Rebel, Imp, or Independent. And as far as F&D is concerned the first mission given to the group by the holocron or mentor to stop (There is no ignorance there is knowledge.) Or the group if they are in a ship hear of the cult and join it but soon realize that as force sensitives they are a threat to the leader and will learn very little from the cult itself. At what cost to their Morality do they go to get clear of the cult, burn it down, or conquer it? Does the whisper of the dark side tempt you young ones?

Moohahaha

So has anyone got a really satisfying lightsaber fight out of the system yet?

If you're speaking of Lightsaber vs. Lightsaber, then yes. It plays out quite differently in this system than in others. You can't really avoid being hit - the best you really hope for is to prevent critical hits and keep them from getting too many excess successes. You end up using Parry to reduce the Damage of the hits (because Breach makes Soak all but useless) but the Strain you take for doing so is pretty significant. This means that you're likely to need to use Advantages to bleed off Strain rather than scoring critical hits (unless you're pretty sure you can drop the target and there aren't other opponents around). The net effect is that it's a rather tactical situation despite not using minis and maps.

81-85 Winded. Awful crit for a Lightsaber user to suffer.............. :(

81-85 lightsaber to the lung you now you can't breath lol.

Is this RPG (Force and Destiny) canon? You'd think Fantasy Flight Games would have shifted towards canon by now.

Depends? With all the ret-con in the SW universe is anything canon now? Canon is what you make of it now.

And technically RPGS are never canon. As what happens in them won't ever be canon. And really they shouldn't be. The closest rpgs get to canon is up to the moment you start play.

First, THANK YOU! to all the guys (especially Pirate) contributing info here!!!! Been looking forward to this book since EotE was announced . If it weren't for Donovan's Ways of the Force supplement, I probably would not have started playing EotE until F&D came out.

Images elsewhere show the races are Cerean, Human, Kel Dor, Mirialan, Nautolan, Togruta, Twi'lek, and Zabrak.

Awesome! I've always thought Kel Dor and Togruta are pretty cool. What do the former get as a species?

OK, the cat is out of the bag on the new mechanic in the game. It's called Morality. That's been tweeted by fans.

You will tell us more about how this mechanic works... *waves fingers*

It's pretty straight forward. Do bad stuff, earn Conflict. Add up conflict at end of evening and roll D10. If your score is below that number, your Morality decreases, if it is above, it rises. There are some other details. It really becomes a factor with using DP to convert Dark Side pips. 1 Conflict per pip converted.

This sounds pretty cool (especially after some other posters have elaborated on how this works). I suspect that I'll try to get my GM to introduce this as soon as I get a copy of F&D in my hands.

Another kitty cat has been freed. Force Powers.

Battle Meditation

Bind

Heal/Harm

Misdirect

Protect/Unleash

Seek

Can we get some info on how these powers work? PLEASE?!

Uh... If I were to lie incompetently and tell you that someone twitterered something something about Force ratings, could you spill the beans on how those shape up?

6 Careers. 18 specs. All Force Sensitive.

Going to be tough not rerolling my character when this comes out.

Parry and Reflection. One is melee one is ranged. Suffer 3 Strain add 2 plus ranks in Talent to reduce damage prior to it being applied to soak. Out of turn incidental.

Looking forward to seeing the full mechanics for this.

From elsewhere:

Consular- Healer, Niman Disciple, Sage

Guardian- Peacekeeper, Protector, Soresu Defender

Mystic- Advisor, Makashi Duelist, Seer

Seeker- Ataru Striker, Hunter, Pathfinder

Sentinel- Artisan, Shadow, Shien Expert

Warrior- Aggressor, Shii-Cho Knight, Starfighter Ace

This looks fantastic!

Warrior seems the most Skywalker-y; that is, encompasses all the skills that Anakin and Luke exhibit, which I guess is the sort of Jedi I'd most like to build: a lightsaber expert who is one helluva starfighter pilot to boot, although I also very much want to explore something more along the lines of the Consular, too (basically the character I'm playing now...).

So ridiculously excited for this! Really hope my friend manages to pick a copy up.

Togruta get two Boost dice to all Assists. Kel Dor get a rank of Knowledge (Education) and remove a pair of Setback for dark vision. They have breather masks obviously.

Force Powers I am not typing the whole tree but some basics.

Battle Meditation has to do with leading, basic power lets you add advantages to a # of allies equal to your Presence for every pip.

Bind, is an Ensnare/Force Choke.

Heal/Harm pretty self explanatory.

Misdirect is basically a mental cloaking device/illusion power.

Protect/Unleash is .....

sw-ep2-Image10.jpg Dooku_Force_lightning.png

Seek is Force tracking power.

Obviously there are your standard upgrades and such to each one.

OK, I thought maybe some of the more fun sounding Talent names would be of interest.

"One with the universe"

"The Force is my ally"

"Makashi finish"

"Hawk Bat Swoop"

"Saber Swarm"

"Saber Throw" yes, I said "Saber Throw"

"Sarlacc Sweep"

This list is not exhaustive. Lots of new Talents introduced in this book.

Does the Holocron differ much from the Mentor, as an option, as far as in-game effects? Or are they simply narrative devices for a) character progression and b) mission hooks?

I'm really happy with what I've heard. It sounds balanced, with options for upgrading the power level with GM agreement.

The Force powers sound very cool without invalidating the muggle characters.

Feels like a lot of things (like starting with lightsabers, and power level at the beginning) is down to the GM.

The races are cool and appropriate; it feels like they've been holding a lot of the good ones back for F&D!

'Jedi' are not rammed down our throats and all the careers can be reskinned for the Force tradition of your choice.

Lightsabers seem iconic but not so overpowered they invalidate every other weapon.

There's a lot of KotOR stuff, from Krayt Dragon crystals to the classic old-school classes like Sentinel and Consular.

It feels like it would translate well to any era.

Lightsaber forms are in, as talent trees.

Pretty much every Force power we could ask for.

The stuff I don't like (Morality) looks like it's easily ignored or reskinned as a motivational thing.

It sounds like FFG have really hit that sweet-spot, of making Force-users iconic and useful without making everything that's come before instantly redundant. I had faith that they could do this, but it's good to see it happen regardless.

Thanks to 2P51 and HappyDaze and all the other Alpha playtesters for spilling the beans!

Holocron is an object with specific mechanics. A mentor is more fluffy and a narrative tool.

I wouldn't dismiss Morality out of hand. Narrative and mechanics need not be exclusive of one another and Morality provides utility for staving off OP-ness.

Its not just stick and consequence though. It also sets up where a GM and player can discuss the character's emotional strengths and weaknesses and when Morality triggers at the beginning of a session really attempt to work that into the story and immerse them more in the concept of the character. It provides a mechanical benefit, but it facilitates more immersion and ownership of the character I think.

How would one go about getting the F&D beta book if one is not at Gen Con?

Neat. How about when it comes to Force artifacts - whether they be a place, person, or (somewhat) portable object. Are they covered mechanically?

Yes.

There were @#$%ers charging silly prices on Ebay. I'd just wait. They want to sell them. They will sell them.

Yeah, I saw people had a couple $100 copies on Ebay. I got my AoR beta book for like $30...
