The Rise of the Fat Swarm(tm)

By Keffisch, in X-Wing

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Allow me to direct your attention to the following list, which almost took the top spot at our Regionals.

"Howlrunner" — TIE Fighter

18

"Mauler Mithel" — TIE Fighter

17
Adrenaline Rush

1

"Winged Gundark" — TIE Fighter

15

Scimitar Squadron Pilot — TIE Bomber

16

Scimitar Squadron Pilot — TIE Bomber

Scimitar Squadron Pilot — TIE Bomber

Its strengths are:

- High durability (good in a timed format)

- Damage output equivalent to a mini-swarm, as long as Howlrunner is around

- PS 2, 2, 2, 6, 7, 8

- No one knew how to combat it, as it took whatever was thrown at it, and threw it right back. And it lasted longer.

Weaknesses:

No special "tricks" or fancy/situational maneuverability options.

A few highly mobile ships used as flankers are very effective against it

Note that there are even stronger/better versions which replaces Winged Gundark and Mauler with Backstabber and Dark Curse but this was the one used.

This is all just to say (as others also have done recently) that Bombers aren't as bad as many people would think. Provided you don't take any ordnance.

Give it a spin, it is fun to both fly with - and against!

Do you fly them in one formation? Or split into 2 formations?

I've only flown against them and so far they have all been in formation. In 2 lines of 3 ships.

e.g.

B1 | B2 | B3

WG| HR | MM

WG = Winged Gundark

HR = Howl

MM = Mauler

I've seen this list as 6 scimitars and howl. He called it Fat Bottom Girls.

This list would work better as:

You mean 5 Scimitars and Howl (6 would be over 96 points alone).

It would seem like assault missles would be a big problem. A hit on bomber 2 hits everyone. 6 damage minimum for 1 missle. With the headhunter coming soon this could be an even bigger issue. If they try to split up the bombers suck and lose their howl runner effect. Might be a good build if regular swarm is big in your meta though. The extra damage to take down a ship would be big.

like the idea, might have to give it a go sometime... oh shame I need to get another bomber!

Which Regionals was this? I probably already have it, but I don't remember Gundark.

Edit: nevermind, this was in Denmark. Carry on!

So I was reading on Team Covenant the other day that their Meta is switching to PS6 squads, seeing the swarms disappear.

I guess that's not reflected near you guys? I'm just curious, because locally I am seeing PS4 and Swarms a LOT still.

The 3-Ship PS6 squads don't generally make it out of the first rounds.

They're $7.50 at MM right now... Muahahaha!

Why, yes. I AM an enabler! ;)

7.50 is a good price, hard to resist! Especially considering I paid around 12-13 for each of mine...

Ah but I'm in the uk so your funny money means nothing to me! ;) lol

A fat TIE swarm that placed high in our regionals was TIE bomber w/seismic charge (x5). :P

I've had good luck with Howlrunner and 5x scimitars. It's absurdly durable.

Is MM meeple mart? They seem to be 11.95 now, did I miss the sale?

MM = Miniature Market. They are running a "Spring Cleaning Sale" (see other thread) with the HWK and TIE Bomber going for $7.50 (amongst a rather huge list of other things for other games).

Just bought 2 more Bombers from MM, looking at this thread I'm glad. I want to try a Tie/B swarm now, but for the opposite reason someone above stated. I would run a Bomber swarm BECAUSE OF Assault missiles. Blount and munitions failsafe means these missiles are going to hit eventually, it would be better to have some durable pawns in the front and maybe keep Howl in a position where she can either zoom in or lag out of range 1 with the Tie/B's.

I have been running this on Vassal to good effect:

Stressor (97 points)

1x Jonus + Ion Pulse Missiles

4x Scimitars + Flachette Torpedoes

Originally I ran Jonus with two Ion Pulse Missiles, but that was before the initiative rules changed and we got to see all the new EPTs, so the last three points are more fluid now. The original idea was to stack a ton of stress on something in the first exchange. The flachettes are great for that, and they let the Bombers alpha strike with 3 dice, though it takes some skill to pull off. Plus they are cheap enough that even if you lose one without firing, it is not a big deal, and you still have 30 health protected by 2 green dice.

For 6 ships, I'd consider

Howlrunner

+ Adrenaline Rush

5x Scimitar

99 points. Give away initiative.
