We need new OP missions other than six-asteroid death match!

By Stormtrooper721, in X-Wing

Why not instead of 6 asteroids, we place 1 gas giant each, and you have to maintain a fair distance from them or else incur a red stress token? Then the ships would have to accelerate away and once free of the gravitational pull, perform a white move? That would be a real test of piloting skill. You could use the gas Giants as ways to lure your adversary in for what seems an easy kill, but leads to a possible loss of speed and movement?

Scale. Gas Giants are several times the size of the Death Star.

But scale doesn't matter; if people say we can have a Star Destroyer Ingame, why not gas giants!

Because you don't run over a gas giant. You fly into it, or around it.

That's no moon! Er, gas giant!

Scale. Gas Giants are several times the size of the Death Star.

Judge me by my gas giant do you?

I think FFG will definitely be making adjustments to give more options than just the 6 asteroid 100-point format. It's already apparent that they're doing that: Escalation is the most obvious example, but they also mentioned that Huge ships can be used as an obstacle in lieu of asteroids. (The latter is not openly tournament-legal yet, and as far as I read still pends the other player's approval. However, the point remains that there are options, and I suggest that this means more variations are coming.)

Yeah, I was very excited when I started reading the huge ship rules at the part when it said that the huge ship's base could be turned over and used as terrain but then incredibly disappointed when it said that this was not tournament legal.

For now, in lieu of mission-based play, I would at least like a variety in the terrain pieces: transports, debris fields, wrecked ships, docking bays, etc.

Well, technically they're legal at the TO's discretion, which implies that the Tournament Rules will be updated to include them at some point. We'll have to wait and see.

Nothing stops a TO from ordering a kit and running a casual event with scenarios. Suggest it to your local play group.

Gravity slingshots do not change your velocity with respect to the body you slingshot around, but rather to some third body, in most cases, the sun, and thus would have no visible effect on a game mat. ;P

Many of us who play this game have played the xwing and tie fighter pc games. MANY of those missions didnt involve killing the enemy. There were recon, get target ids, survive a certain amount of time, protect cargo containers etc. in fact the rebels probably would avoid engaging in most missions to preserve ships and pilots. Completeing a MISSION is more than just crunching numbers and going for the right meta build. It requires, tactics, on the spot descision making, the ability to adapt your forces to the mission AND LUCK. Sometimes you will have all the chips stacked against you in a mission, pulling out those victories are the best. More missions for ALL levels of play.

Im sure the gravitational pull of a Gas Giant could exceed the distance in game. So if we are in 3 d space and the Gas Giant is 3 diameter, but below the field of combat, it would seem small, but still have a powerful effect on the craft passing close by. Just an idea.

To be honest I actually prefer no asteroids. It makes it so you focus constantly on maneuvers to get around the dog fights.

lol but after seeing the Tantiv IV There is either going to be a Star Destroyer next or a Tartan Patrol cruiser.

However I could see sort of a set up for a Star Destroyer /Nebulon B Cruiser. It will require 4 of the large bases though. and there will be a gap between the 2 pairs (or sets) of bases large enough for the Corvette to fit between them so fighters can fly over or under the Huge Capital ships. The forward base can represent the ramming part of the ship while the back can represent the back half or the command deck of the capital ships.

So here is the lay out.

[Horizontal pair of Big Ship bases] Gap the same size of the horizontal pair. {Vertical pair of Big Ship bases.}
