Force Ghosts and Mummified Sith

By TrkC, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hello Edge of the Empire fans!

Soon I shall be joining you with an adventure as much mythical as science fiction. But since I can't wait until I've got my book before brainstorming, I thought I'd put this idea to you the community and see how sensible it seems to you.

Before I came here I checked out here: Force Ghosts and decided that it wasn't too far fetched to suggest I could have a Mummy inspired campaign.

The idea I have is that a powerful Sith Lord, so powerful it took a Jedi Master and five Jedi Knights to take him down at the cost of all of their lives. Bit extreme I know, but he's meant to be the baddest bad guy whose return could spell the doom of the galaxy so bear with me. Such was his power that he haunts the planet of his "death" to this day, filled with rage and hatred, and the Jedi went to great lengths to destroy all record of his existence.

Like any self respecting Sith Lord, he had an apprentice who had his masters body preserved through mummification and hidden from the Jedi. Not content to leave it there, the apprentice made sure that if anyone discovered the tomb they would face plenty of dangers. Somehow the Jedi had managed to trap his lords force ghost and they hid the force prison from any Sith who might want to rescue him. The only item able to free the Sith Lord was then taken and hidden away from the prison.

Suffice to say that those with knowledge of these things, Sith and Jedi alike, died and the secret of important locations with them.

The year is now 4 ABY and the Death Star has gone boom, taking Emperor Palpatine with it and Darth Vader is no more. Some of the loyal Empire have set themselves up in the Outer Rim and are led by one of the Emperor's Hands who has gained some knowledge of the Sith Lord. Seeking a powerful and immortal leader to reforge the Empire, she seeks to learn more and find a way to raise the Mummy from his tomb.

Meanwhile, an old Jedi who escaped Order 66 has been training an Apprentice. Both can foresee the return of a great evil which will blaze a trail of death and terror across the galaxy, but neither know the who, what, where, when and why and must figure it out in time to prevent it.

As for the other characters, they just seek fortune and glory and some ancient relics would fetch a high price.

Opinions are welcome and I look forward to reading your replies tomorrow.

Getting late and I've a busy morning ahead.

This sounds like a great idea to me with the potential for a really epic story... The way Star Wars should be!

I ran something along similar lines a while ago. My campaign centered around the discovery of an ancient alien of unknown race who was discovered in stasis by a group of "way too curious" archaeologists. Once revived the Alien laid waste to the archaeologists & escaped into the galaxy.

This race of aliens had been eradicated by the Republic long before the Sith appeared on the scene & all records of their existence had been deleted & only a small group of "Watchers" knew of their existence & prepared for any potential return.

The alien was fantastically strong in the Dark Side of the Force & set about rallying old ally/slave species... To cut a long story short the Republic faced a massive invasion & took massive losses! The Players were on one of the first planets to be hit & were recruited by the organisation that had been set up to protect against the aliens return! One of the players had created a new near human species which I tied into the Ancient Alien... Saying that his race were one of there slave races! In the end it provided some great role-playing opportunities with him being tempted to return to the alien's side & ultimately an epic final battle where he gave his life to save the rest of the party & the galaxy!

You need some extra bad guys other then the "boss" and Stormtroopers to fight. You could possibly integrate the Carbonite Sith Army revealed mysteriously at the end of the Forces of Corruption video game. It suggests a frozen army of Sith Troopers(Knights of Old Republic era, 4000 years old ago) that could be awakended and even the possibility of a frozen Sith Lord to lead them. Read the information in the links above. I've often thought of using this little recalled kernel of awesomeness in a campaign, but never have. Seems appropriate for your campaign. It's like a Let-Havoc-Begin button. Only needs thawing.

To riff on this a bit - since we are doing the whole evil mummy thing - why not continue the Egyptian-esque theme and say that the Master was buried in his crypt with his carbonite army, maybe even his apprentice too (much like pharaohs were buried with their servants).

Just a thought.

To further riff on this:

Why make it an Emperor's Hand that wants this guy? Why not have a collection of "Servants" that can "Hear The Words Of The Master" doing all they can to awaken him/her/it? This way you have an organization (like the random servants we see in cheesy films involving mummies and other aspects of Egyptian lore) that can lead the party on a wild chase to get everything before the end, and they may have hope. . .until something bigger, like your Emperor's Hand, getting involved.

Or maybe the Hand was the one who started the organization, like how Palpatine had his dark side adepts?

It may give you more beyond "Okay, we're killing stormtroopers again" in your game.

I did something similar involving a Force Ghost and a relic (years later I learned that something was already done with Celeste Morne), and it met some approval. Ancient digs are also a hoot, and may be a blast with the right party.

Keep up the good work!

So an Emperor's Hand gets sent on a secret mission by Palpatine to uncover the secrets of the Tomb of the Sith Lord. The Hand recruits a few helpers who start up the secret organization.

How about a dull, poorly thought out name like.....

.....wait for it.....

.....Brotherhood of the Hand

 so lame it just might work!

Sith Lord was Mummified, but also had the carbonite treatment and his army of loyal nasties was frozen in carbonite and placed in his tomb. Perhaps some local primitives worshipped the Sith as a god.

Perhaps his apprentice was carbonited but the Jedi managed to steal him and hide him somewhere. Perhaps it's only the apprentice who can free his master as anyone else will just get killed.

So the bad guys want to:

  1. Find and free apprentice
  2. Recover the relic
  3. Free the Force Ghost
  4. Enter the tomb to reunite ghost and body
  5. Awaken the Sith army from the tomb and wipe out the galaxy

Sounds like fun. But the good guys will attempt to stop that while not knowing all the secrets and having to investigate along the way.

Meanwhile archaeologists after fortune and glory stumble upon things they shouldn't.

And let us not forget that sometimes, the players are hired to do things and don't fully know the reasons why. . .

No, we should not forget that.

In fact, I best make sure none of them know about this forum. Don't want to spoil their horrified reaction when they finally realize they're in deep doodoo and a long dead Sith Lord with the power to rule the universe is about to kill them all.

Smart move.

Most of my players know I am here (mostly because of my starship creation threads), but they barely even read the rulebooks, much less every post I make!

By the by, if they seem to know what's going on, throw a new hook at them! A rival Sith Lord, maybe the Force Ghost of one of the Jedi, a false lead while someone else awakens the Sith, a bigger treasure elsewhere, being offered to change sides, an all-you-can-eat waffle feast for Life Day, or that everything they know is wrong (maybe it's a JEDI that's locked up there!).

I should also note that a guy I knew at a local game shop played a Taung that was frozen in carbonite/stasis until the Age of Rebellion, and when he came out and realized he was the last of his kind, he built up his own mercenary group and started to overthrow the galaxy. Something like this could also be a useful tool to consider!

Just wondering how come a lot of questions about things that seem to be dealing with Game Mastering are not posted in the http://community.fantasyflightgames.com/index.php?/forum/336-game-masters/ (Game Masters link)? I totally love this thought for a campaign from the original poster however, I think it makes more sense for it to be in the Game Masters forum right? I mean "This is a forum for GMs to trade tips, ask for advice, and discuss ongoing adventures. Players, you are warned!" is the label under the Game Masters forum.

/end rant

/stomps off

Going back to the Game Masters forum to see if I can learn to gm.

BTW

Sturn - I want to steal your idea.

LibrariaNPC - I really want to play in your campaign and with you as a player

TrkC - I hope you write this up your adventure/campaign and make it available it sounds so awesome.

You are right that this should be in the GM thread. TrkC, keep that one in mind, especially if you want to keep it away from your players (as the GM section contains a spoiler note if memory serves correctly.

AgentJ, thanks for the compliment, but most GMs are not willing to have me at a gaming table. Something about doing too much research (I'm a Librarian; there's such a thing as too much research?!).

And GMing isn't that hard, as you may see in the GM side of the site. Feel free to flag me down if you need some thoughts or input!

Oops! My bad.

I shall run around the street a hundred times as punishment for my rookie mistake.

As to your last point. Not only will I be writing up the background, I'll also be making YouTube battle reports.

It is my plan is as follows:

  1. I'll write the story up to the point where gaming would begin.
  2. I intend collecting models and setting up boards with terrain for visual reference.
  3. Every action will be photographed, perhaps with some arrow markers and model-eye-view pictures.
  4. Any talking will use close up pictures with speech bubbles next to them.

After the "game" side of things I'll then write some extra story. Perhaps with some extra pictures, because everyone likes pictures.

In time I plan to start combining videos posted on YouTube into movie-length features. But the full story will be told on my blog. One option is to divide it into three posts with the pre-game story, the game and then the post-game story. The other option is to make one long post with the full story.

Just because you do research does not mean your character can/does. Also its the GM's game right? they can change and make things how they want them not just the way your research shows.

What?!?!

Everyone knows when you make a mistake you have to "drop and give me 20" (thats push-ups) not run around the block.

Awesome! can't wait for the youtube stuff.
