Customizing non-ship bits

By perniciousducks, in X-Wing

So, this topic has come up a few times and I always appreciate it and steal liberally from it.

Here's what I've done:

Paint the tokens and bases with paint pens:

Glue 1/2" zinc washers to my bases. Initially 1 in small bases, 4 in large bases, but later switched to 2 per large base because it was just a bit too heavy.

Filled the bases with black silicone for traction and a bit more weight:

Then painted all of the bases and pegs matte black to look awesome:

Looks good overall I think:

Next up on my list is to improve the dials, but I'm not sure on what size nylon washers to get and was hoping somebody could tell me what they used. Also going to spray them with a clear coat for protection. Done anything else to your xwing bits?

Sorry if the images are too big, I wrote this post on a phone...

I used nickels under the bases of a lot of Warhammer figures because I'm a high roller. I do like coloring the sides of tokens, though.

really like what you've done here! Not sure why i never thought of this..

Awesome stuff.

For some reason, I am very reluctant to make any permanent modifications to my ships...

Does the silicon come out easily if necessary?

What brand of paint pens did you use? Those look really good.

Coloring the edges is a common thing I've seen. Not really for me, if I'd do anything with them (and had the effort) it would be to blakc out the edges.

No, instead I added velcro pads to the backs of my Target Locks. Then I grabbed some FFG bases and put them on. So now I have paired target locks that stand up from the battlefield and don't hook on the felt playmat I have.

I use a a 5/16 neoprene rubber washer in between my dials. You can find it at home depot.

Walmart sells paint pens by Elmers called Painters.

I use 5/16" Nylon washers from Lowes, if you're in the states. Fits perfectly. Some people will say to put contact paper on the dials or paint it with a matte finisher of some sort. I don't think you really need that, the washers leave enough gap that the dials don't rub on each other, the only thing is the paint on the back of the cardboard may rub off, but I rather have that then some other chemical rubbing off.

I scraped off some excess that got on the outsides fairly easily. It'll be hard to get out of the bottom as those washers are super glued in there and more likely to break the base than come out. Silicone is a bit messy to work with, I ended up using a putty knife to smooth and scrape extra off in the process.

It's really cheap stuff, like $6 at Home Depot, you can probably afford one base as a guine pig

I like to store my ships mounted on their stands, with ID tokens and all. So I'd hate to screw one up as a guinea pig :(

I saw elsewhere that someone cut up a thin mouse pad and fit that under the ship bases, didn't need any glue. That's more my style!

Cheap ones from Michael's, I'll look up the exact brand for you tonight.

Thanks!

I gloss coat all of my cardboard pieces and color the edges black with a wide-tipped Sharpie. I also use the nylon washers in my dials. Between the gloss and the washer, no issues at all with wear.

I did the washer/silicon trick in my bases and it worked well, but I had problems with stickiness and had a few ship tokens ruined when the surface peeled off after getting stuck to the underside of the bases. I pulled them all out and glued a square of thin mouse pad into the hollow of the base. Works better than the silicon as far as traction goes, and no mess at all. They don't have the weight of the washers, but the increased grip makes it unnecessary.

I color the side of my tokens, templates and large ships. I'm thinking of going back over them with white out to underbase the color and redo them though. Also, thinking of color coding my small ship dials so i can more easily find them when i need them.

They were "Craft Smart" brand paint pens, they were pretty affordable at michael's"

Nice work there!

I did a similar treatment to all my bases - same size metal washers, not sure what metal was that but it's quite heavy! They fit in perfectly - the plastic base is elevated from the table so little that it almost touches it. No further treatment though - I like the dull clanking noise they make when you put them on the board right now and they no longer slip.

I'm still wondering if I should spray paint the bases though. I won't be painting the pegs for sure though.

Velcroed the TLs.

I also recently got a new tackle box on the recommendations of others. It holds everything extra for now, but not any of the actual ships I own and it's pretty full. I have a bit of room that I think I can fit wave 4 and rebel aces bits. We'll see beyond that.
