Mison vs. Red Squadron pilot

By Jo Jo, in X-Wing

Is there any reason ever to fly a single Red squadron pilot over Tarn Mison? They are the same cost and the only thing the Red pilot offers better than Tarn is 1 PS. I don't think that 1 PS is going to make or break you.

Tarn's ability gives him pretty good offensive power and a good jouster. He can pull a TL out of a K-turn if he is targeted first. His low PS actually helps him. I much rather have it than 1 more PS.

Agreed, I think he is one of the best valued X-Wings getting around.

I'm keen to throw R7 on him when it comes out as well. Very good 25 point X-Wing in my book!

The major thing with Tarn is so few people TL, then the Red looks quite appealing.......

What?

Sorry, I had mis remembered his ability. For some reason I had got it into my head that the opponent had to target lock you, not just target you.

You replied as I was looking up my suspicions I had put in a stupid post...... :-)

Red still have their place as you can't have multiple Tarn's, but you can have multiple Red's.

Yeah, but I mean if you got 23 points to spend, why would you go Red over Tarn?

Or you wanted to add 2 Reds, why not one Red and Tarn.

This. Epic is a thing.

As others has said reds still have their place, unique vs. multiple etc. though I personally have seen a shift to Dagger squadrons in my local area which makes Tarn a little less appealing.

I think if you can spare 2 more points, throw on R2-D6 and Veteran Instincts, 25 points for Tarn at PS5 is quite good value. Also as others have said R7 Astro is an option but it feels too defensive for my liking.

Though to be perfectly honest, if I have 23 points to spend I'm hard pressed to justify a red squadron pilot over a blue Squadron and spend a point elsewhere

I actually think Tarn is better suited/more efficient at his standard lower PS and wouldn't want to make him higher (your individual meta dependant). After he moves he should (generally) Focus so it doesn't matter that he moves first. If you give him VI and PS5 he may not get a free Tgt Lock before he shoots.

Making him PS3 is excellent in that he can be shot at and choose who he wants to keep his Tgt Lock combined with Focus on. The risk is of course that he dies before shooting but he should be ok most of the time.

I'm surprised no one else brought up maneuvering. If all your list is PS4, then Tarn would have to move/act first. If you use a Red squadron pilot, however, you can move/attack in any order. It gives you options. Further, if you enemy is all PS4 and they are good at focus fire, the Red Squadron will still get a shot if it's destroyed but Tarn would not.

Usually? Take Tarn. But there are times, such as the above, where PS is more important than Tarn's ability.

I actually am starting to like this for a 4 X-Wing build with Tarn in it. It has some nice synergy and has a decent PS bid as well as a chance at initiative.

I gave the new X-Wing pilots their first tun the other night, performed well and I quite liked them:

He is a very good ship, and I believe the lowest PS unique pilot in the game. There's only one problem that I can really see with him, and that is he suffers a bit if people don't focus on him and just leave him alone until later. His ability doesn't make him a threat if left untouched. For instance Wedge Antilles, Kir Kanos, Backstabber, Ibtisam and Jendon all have abilities that continue to function throughout the match and continue to be dangerous, even if there are more important pilots to focus down (well except maybe wedge, most people go for him first if Biggs isn't around). Again, it's not a very big drawback (I mean, if he was just a regular Red people aren't likely to be focusing him down early either) but it is something to think on.

Yea I agree he's no threat early in the game. Late in the game if you're both down to 1 ship it could be bad news, but since he's PS3 it probably means your ship is higher which might make the difference. Or ideally you have multiple ships still left to face him.

with R2-D6 and Veteran Instincts, Tarn costs the same as Biggs and Hobbie for the same PS. 3 PS5 X's with a PS4 red (so Hobbie can have his droid, R3-A2) could work well together

I have used Tarn a few times now. A good back up ship, couple him with Opportunist for that extra shot.

Nobody wants to shoot Tarn with an R7, which means he gets ignored and makes it to the end game where he will be even more powerfull and resilient. VI is a mistake, his ability really shines with low PS and a R7.

When R7 is released, then I may just replace VI with that :-)

Yeah, he'll be a pain to deal with on a 1 v 1 situation.

For me, with the prevalence of PS4 pilots in my local meta, there's just too high a chance that Tarn will die before he gets to shoot. That and I love the flexibility of being all at PS4 with my Bloody Daggers.

I've used this build before. Went 3-0, so I'd say the results were very good

This looks like a very popular build, I've also tested it yesterday (is this list THAT obvious?) and went 2-0 against 3 and 4-ship rebel builds (all X-wings). I'm going to throw it against some Imperials by the end of the week.

Though the MVP was certainly Hobbie, Tarn was also a grat choice and I wouldn't replace him with with Red even if you'd pay me. In the first match I managed to outmaneuver my opponent so that his Luke was forced to shoot at Tarn or don't shoot at all and I was able to retaliate with Focus+TL on my first turn. Golden :)

Of course, he's a bit situational, but when his ability kicks in, he deals a lot of pain to your opponent :)
