Foes cards confusion

By Silver Wall, in The Lord of the Rings: The Board Game

In the Friends and Foes expansion, each of the Foe cards has a red shield token in the lower right corner. What is this meant to signify? There's nothing in the rulebook that mentions the shield token on the cards.

I can only think of 2 reasons: to remind you when scoring at the end of the game (which would be redundant, since the rulebook is explicit a few times to count your number of shields and defeated Foe cards), OR you receive a shield token for defeating the foe.
Thoughts?

It's only to remind you of scoring.
