Death to the swarms. WI Regionals

By De Bad Wolf, in X-Wing

Can someone please post what the buzzsaw shuttle actually is? I get the doom shuttle, but missed out on when the buzzsaw was coined. FYI, I really like the doom shuttle. Seems every time I run it, I get at least 2-3 hits at range 3 then plop down the crit. Really nasty ship that I target first when playing against it.

I think a buzzsaw shuttle is FCS+Gunner and maybe EU.

Correct. Omicron Group Pilot + Fire Control System + Gunner + Engine Upgrade.

You also have a weapons engineer in there so you get two target locks per use of your FCS. This also lets you do cheeky things like shoot at someone with high agi at range 3 and not modify the attack and miss. When that happens you TL that ship, as well as someone that is a much better shot, like someone at range 1 with your weapons engi. Then you gunner that shot into the range one target with a free TL.

You take that back! The Buzzsaw shuttle has done wonders for me! Far more than a Vader Shuttle ever has. :P

My issue with the buzzsaw is by the time you get the points into it I would rather have a firespray.

I sometimes consider that. However, in a timed match putting out consistent damage can mean more than surviving, which the Buzzsaw does very well. You also get to move much faster with that boost, so yoi can be unpredictable on the initial approach. I think i only like the Firespray against a the duo Falcon matchup :P

I am a huge fan of a Firespray with a recon spec. You can avoid so much damage by having that extra focus or two for incoming fire. Also the rear fire arc is very handy after that first pass that I find it hard to give up.

Well...Sablegryphon's original combo didnt have Weapons Engineer, nor is it necessary. It DOES create some cool tricks, but the Gunner + FCS combo works just fine without it. Engine Upgrade is a must, though. hehe.

I'd also say, refer to Kelvan's post, pretty much sums up why you'd want over the other.

The bounty hunter recon load out is very strong. Go in, get shot, run... you're a hurt ship but you never need to k turn due to the butt cannon.

That being said as a long range gun (say krassis with hlc) you are at a distinct disavantage to a shuttle. you have no 0 maneuver, you cannot use your butt cannon, and you're 12 points more expensive than a shuttle at the same PS.

Just revisiting the post so a friend could find it. Did I call it or what? This year I hope to do just as well if not better with another unexpected build to counter the current metas.

Holy necro, Batman!

This comment and the OP highlights that no matter what is on top: a vocal minority is going to hate on it in the forums.

Kinda funny this remark was already made and discussed.

Should sub in "dumb build" term used at my game store for "easy builds". And I do point out 2 YTs are easier. I will not be flying 2 YTs this year. And will be surprised if anyone is flying anything like my build. But it can beat the Bro Bots, 2 YT, Decimator + Soonter builds I expect to see this year at WI Reg.

Only bumped this post because a friend wanted to read it.

The swarms may not be completely dead but its nice to not see so few compared to last year and kinda funny how the meta has flipped to the 2 ship build that I was heavily criticized about. Mostly by my friends.

To be fair, I don't think your build is really a precursor to what we're seeing now or was the key to the death of swarms (that can be attributed to other things). That's not to take away from your success and I look forward to seeing what you fly in WI this weekend.

True, but don't tell my friends that.

I think the Fat Han really brought about the terror of the turrets. Thanks Paul. Just proud I was rocking it when it wasn't the thing. And I think the title of the post is comical to the swarms current status.

This forum needs an unlike button...badly.

Lol!

When the OP created this thread last year I was about 99% sure he was the same guy who people at the event were complaining about who acted like a complete jerk and was awful to play against. In fact it was basically the only complaint I heard about from anyone there.

Of course he would bump his own thread.

Spreading bad comments of things about someone you didn't play against that you thought people said over a year ago. Very big of you.

I did not play anyone who wasn't fairly well known in the X-Wing community. And no such comments were posted. Good day sir.

No. They were said. On site. I was there. No we didn't play one another...thankfully.

What "killed" the swarms, and I say killed loosely, is we no longer live in a meta where two dice attacks are a viable option, for the average player, because of autothrusters. Phantoms could be another argument. However I think I proved that wrong at a few store championships by not allowing them to decloak for countless turns.

The renegade play group has talked about how the mov change is the real death of the swarm because it hardly allows you a full win and a swarm player falls behind in the long game.

This being said, swarms are not truly dead, life support with the cord falling out of the wall, you bet. Not dead. This was proven when Dom won the X-wing against Cancer event flying a swarm. Swarms belong in the hands of a surgeon. Sadly we have few of those surgeon type players left in this game as the meta has shifted to easy fly large ships.

ANY list can beat ANY list on any given day. Player skill is what matters. If and when the meta shifts back to 5 to 6 or even 7 ship lists a lot of players will fall out of the meta. The players that learned to play flying a swarm, and can still hold their own, flying a swarm will still be the surgeons that are consistently in the top tier of players. Example AZ regional, Richard Hsu, gets it done with X-wings in his list.
