I don't care WHAT era or universe its from, more choices are better.... As long as they are IN scale!!!!!!! and the Huge ships are somewhat in SCALE.... I can live with what FFG has done so far scale wise.. Please don't mess it up by bringing in ISDs because they are Iconic and canon!! BTW I recently started reading all the rogue squadron books so i could get some insight as to what pilots and or ships may be coming up... I had not read a SW book since "Splinter of the minds eye" 35 years ago or more... yow its been awhile. However i did play ALL the PC games!! with KOTOR 1 and 2 being some of the best i have EVER played!! wish they would make a new KOTOR game or something along those lines... anyway getting OT now...lol
EU ships dont really appeal, thinking of stopping any new purchases, are you?

KoTOR's only got a single Wave's worth of ships though.
I agree that it is hampering to limit yourself to the first three Waves of ships, but Wave 4 (and hopefully onward) does not negate or make any of Waves 1-3 obsolete, even with all the new abilities and pilots.
You're still at a disadvantage if the other person hasn't eschewed Wave 4. The old stuff has its role in combination with the new stuff. The Wave 1-2-3 meta's tricks are known now. Wave 1-2-3-4's most powerful squads have yet to be discovered.
Edited by LagomorphiaI thought the KOTOR stuff would be too old?? time span wise...
Again, I agree.
I agree that in a tournament setting, "Puritists" will likely struggle to keep up with the meta, but when it come to a casual gaming enviroment, the game is balanced enough that a "Purist" could set their ships on the table with my Wave 4 ships, and still play a viable, and most importantly, Fun and balanced game.
Edited by catachan23Well, so much for my generation theory. :-DMan, I'm 36. I'd like to think of myself as a young whippersnapper, but....
LOL I'm 50 next month.. so I was 13 when I saw the first one in the theater... been a big fan for a long time, I suck at video games, but I read most of the books that came out. There's a lot of good stories out there.. and I have played all the RPGs and own the new one and hope to get in some games with that.
Having read about many of these ships and seen them in video games, I will say that any ship is pretty much going to be bought, I own a number of ALL ships out so far, I may eventually buy the CR-90 but its my only possible non purchase so far.. price point is hard for me.
So will I be getting wave 4... you betcha... probably 4 of each eventually.. I really dig the Phantom, for its cool look and sneakyness, and the Defender for its badness in looks and toughness... it'll be a formidable ship.
I am excited for the Phantom because it sounds like a lot of fun, not because of the source material. Same with every other ship in the game. I have no emotional hang-ups about which ships I play.
After researching about EU / Canon. Realized that George never had plans post VI? Let alone Disney, only accepts 1-6 & clone wars, so wow, thats a ball kicker.
One hand, I get it with all the random stuff thrown in, I would take WEG RPG over random video creations, TIE SNIPER anyone? LMAO.
My only true concern is pitting technology that are hundreds if not more apart from each other. Plus, the "cloak" thing is relatively new, but required rare resources which around BoY were nearly depleted, at least the good stuff. THere are other froms of "cloaking" that masked ship sensors, which I will accept over "human eye" invisibility. I mean, Star Trek anyone? When I think of that technology I think of "Predator" or in D&D invisible, no one really thinks that you still displace water or leave footprints etc.
For me, Phantom, was a poor choice, to what there could be. But then again, this isn't a "Rarity" game where they can just spam out dozens of ships. So, as long as they keep the "Min/Max" factors out of the game, I don't have any issues.
I personally have grown fond of Ghtroc 720, due to DeckPlans MSPaint drawings of it. Light frieghter that can be modified / adaptable like the Falcon.
I also don't want them to pull the MTG crap either, where they keep adding in new "walks/abilities" I dropped out of MTG post Homelands.
Understood.
I agree that it is hampering to limit yourself to the first three Waves of ships, but Wave 4 (and hopefully onward) does not negate or make any of Waves 1-3 obsolete or less viable, even with all the new abilities and pilots.
To continue my example from above; becasue there is now a Ranger in D&D, that does not make the Wizard any less viable. Different tools for different jobs.
If you want to restrict yourself to ships that only appeared on film, and then only those that fought for Imperials or Rebels (which would exclude the Firespray) then I think you're only playing half this game. With the release of new ships from the EU, the game expands into new story-lines of our own creation.
I'm not about to get all philosophical about my squad choices, or try and create a backstory for a squad, because a game only lasts for a hour or so, so why bother overthinking it? If I use Luke, Wedge and Biggs in a game and get them all smoked, does that mean I can never play them again? Of course not.
For those that want to limit themselves, they will find their game will possibly diminish as FFG releases more ships over time. Let's face it, they've used all the ships from the movies, so it's EU from here out.
Catachan says "Different tools for different jobs" - Absolutely. Putting whatever "Imperial Doctrine" concepts aside, any every military organisation will use whatever tools necessary to achieve its goals. The Empire and the Rebel Alliance should be no different within this game. Hence, new ships.
Am I a dedicated movie fan? Yes I am. Have I followed the EU at all? Not at any stage. Had I seen any of the Wave 4 ships before? No, I hadn't. Am I going to get some of them? You betcha, because they are going to be some interesting tools to add to the tool box. The key to this game is how the various pilots, skills and upgrades all interact and the more options you've got, then the more interesting your games will be, and the more flexible your play style can be.
If you want to restrict yourself, then good luck to you. You've only got a finite number of combinations to use, and they've all been tried before AND countered before.

I really don't understand the whole: "I'm going to rage quit X-Wing over this EU ship! Who's with me?!" Thread thing.
Look, of you don't enjoy the game anymore, that's fine. Don't go away angry, just go away. FFG doesn't owe you anything. The game and game balance comes first. The game will continue to expand. If you do enjoy the game, why does it matter if the ship was on screen or not, if it's thematic and fits the world, and most importantly it fits well in the game.
The original poster said nothing about quitting. Only that he wasn't interesting in buying EU ships. That is completely fine. And I don't see enough power creep in this game that would make it extremely tough to keep up with the completionists.
I grew up on the flight sims. In fact I think my first experience with Star Wars was through them. So I actually see myself buying more ships now that the EU is out. I am debating pre-ordering another 5 TIE Defenders so I can run 8 Tie Defenders and Vader at 300pts. There are plenty of weird ships I think are best forgotten, but FFG so far has picked very reasonable ships to bring into the game. If they keep this up I will be spending even more than I have now. There are plenty of EU ships that have a place in this game. TIE Avengers, TIE Droids, Assault Gun Boats, Skipray Blast Boats, I-7 Howlrunners, YT-2400s, Cloak Fighters all would be good additions. Even the Missle Boat as an Imperial Epic ship would be interesting! I say bring it on! (though my wallet begs for mercy..)
Also I have noticed one OT ship left out of the game. Because of the remake of "A New Hope" the Sentinel shuttle is a movie canon ship. ![]()
Why do the phantoms activecamo? Looks flashier in the cutscenes.
People crying about the EU being 'unhealthy' what's less healthy:
1. EU Ships adding new content to the game.
or
2. No new content being added because they've run out of ships.
Because if you don't want EU content, you're going to get option 2....unless you WANT prequel garbage in the game ![]()
I'm confused. Nobody thinks invisible people displace water? I think you would. So do most readers. But what does that have to do with a space cloaking device?
Look at popular "Harry Potter" Prison of Askaban, when he leaves the tavern and his friends see his footprints, while it is actively snowing. It doesn't collect on his form.
Several groups I played w/ didn't really catch onto how invisibility works and wouldn't react to sensing it and finding other ways to reveal.
As for Star Wars, it's relatively newer canon, especially TIE Phantom. Cloaking Devices with 3 different levels of technology, the most successful had their resource mine ran dry.
Since it's a table top game, it just equates to choice of movements. I really wouldn't' consider this the "invisible" type but more sensor masking.
Even the description of Phantom ability to cloak/move/de-cloak/fire/cloak is fluff added for the video game. I mean, it it's use is based off.
Previous techs required huge sources of power let alone limiting energy uses, so without any real mention of how works, I more dismiss this "fluff" to sell a videogame ![]()
Yeah... Can't call Harry Potter overly analytical(or analyzable) fiction, but the invisibility cloak seems mildly intelligent so it's quite possible it dissapears things that rest on it. Look at the Incredibles, or comic books, or The Dresden Files for better examples. Hell, look at LOTR. They all cover it pretty well. But I might be overestimating the average nerd. I doubt it though.

I understand your point. However, like a few other people, I think you misunderstood what the OP was saying. It ain't about what he wants FFG to make. It's about what he wants to buy.
I'm entirely sympathetic to his point of view, and probably share most of it. I'm probably going to self-limit my choices of what I am going to buy, because I want to buy ships that I find compelling, rather than ships that I find to be uncompelling.
Rage quit? Really? Nobody threatened that.
EU unhealthy? Not from my point of view.....
.......does it interest me though? No.
Limit myself by restricting my future purchases? Maybe, but there's a little game called chess which only has 6 different pieces total and that's been around about 1500 years.
Tron Legacy
Alan Bradley: Given the prices we charge to students and schools, what sort of improvements have been made in Flynn... I mean, um, ENCOM OS-12?
Richard Mackey: This year we put a "12" on the box.
I love that quote, makes me think of Apple and the "must have" mindset they created.
With regards future purchases, as I like repaints, I need 2 more Firesprays, 3 more ties, 1 more 181st and 2 Royal Guard. That's without Tie advances and bombers. I have only just started with the rebels. I'm pretty sure FFG will have my pound of flesh, just not spent on EU ![]()
If a player is ceasing their purchases of EU material then I think they forfeit their right to comment on strategies out of EU ships. Expansions arent just content expansions, but soft patches too. If the phantom leaves X-wings particularly vulnerable then X-Wing players forgoing the EU can't rule that it's unfair, when combos from a future R-41 turn the tide. *shrug*
More for the rest of us I guess?

Let's just say I hope this is an attempt at humour. If opinions aren't valued on a forum, the clue is in the name "forum", then possibly I am in the wrong place.
Edited by slim chaneyThe problem is, if i don't buy any more ships, in the end i will get bored, so instead i will buy more, simple
good game, needs ships to continue, or ffg will stop production of the game, and we will be forced to play attack wing.... And we don't want that!
I love the EU and the many ships that it introduced so I'm pretty stoked about wave 4 but my feelings tell me that future waves will contain more ships that tie in with the Rebels tv series and the new movies rather than ships from the EU. They may hopefully continue making EU/Legends ships (of which I'd like to see K-wing, Tie Avenger, Skipray, Wild Karrde, Hound's Tooth, Pulsar Skate, etc) but I think eventual when the new canon universe starts to expand we'll all find ourselves with a larger variety of official ships. I think that should be a comforting thought for those who don't care much for the EU.
Edited by WraithdtWhilst I both understand and respect people who are against the EU; for me, it was my childhood. I loved E-Wing's in the X-Wing books series, I adored dabbling with the TIE/Pha in Empire at War, and the Defender rocked TIE Fighter like there was no tomorrow!
I'm looking forward to the nostalgia, gameplay, and fun painting opportunities that this wave will bring.Come at me, IV!
I feel a lot like the OP, no interest in the EU ships and buying ships I don't like to get new upgrades seems like a very expensive persuit. Probably will get them cos I'm weak though. I'll give wave 4 a try anyway, but after that's it'd have to be prequel ships to pull me in.
Prequel over EU???? why consider them different? basically prequel to me IS EU just going in the other direction time span wise. Should mean weaker ships, but seems to me technology doesn't change much in Starwars time span wise... my analogy for Starwars technology is kind of like in Football when you get a 1/2 the distance to the goal line penalty. Starwars technology time line seems to be at the 1/32" mark to the goal line kind of thing as the technology has been around so long so no big leaps are happening... problem with mixing prequel and EU that I can see would be the people/pilots/crew as they do have fixed life spans.....
