EU ships dont really appeal, thinking of stopping any new purchases, are you?

By The_Brown_Bomber, in X-Wing

ok so here is my current collection:

REBELS (15 current ships, 20 total projected ships)

A, BBB, XXXX, YY, 2x Hawk, 2x YT, Rebel Transport (rebel aces ordered, might get two actually), 1x Tantive IV on order

IMPERIALS (26 current ships)

3x Tie Adv, 8x tie-fighters, 4x tie intercepters (2 from aces), 5x Bombers, 3x Firespray, 3x Shuttle

For the mathematically challenged thats 41 current ships, 46 projected total ships.

Im thinking this is enough to play around with for quite some time. Yes the new upgrades are nice but im not gonna be suckered into getting dozens more ships just for the upgrades. I love starwars, but im old school and dont follow the EU or even rate the 3 prequels.

It could be Starwars VII, VIII and IX will change my mind about the EU but right now I am content and am finding it hard to justify the expense of growing my collection at its current rate.

Is anyone thinking along the same lines as me or am I the only one with more sense than money.

I'm very picky about the EU. I started the game because of the HWK-290 and am really looking forward to the Phantom TIE because of growing up with them, but beyond that, I'm going to be very selective. Wave 4 might be the last wave I care about, but I hope to be surprised about the other releases, at least.

Nah. I like Star Wars, but am not super-aligned with it to the point I would forego the new stuff. I really like how the Defender and Phantom appear to play. They both look silly IMO and I am not concerned about it from a fluff angle. They look fun from a gameplay angle only.

Wave 4 will introduce a lot of interesting pilot and ship abilities. I'm far too curious to explore those options than skip the ships because they weren't in the movies.

I enjoy the game as the game.

Yes, like everyone, I got suckered in by the "Star Wars" on the box, but now that I am, I enjoy the game itself and don't care whether I know the ships or not, just what they can do.

I am mildly familiar with EU - I have played most of the games, and have read maybe a dozen of the earlier books. But I don't care. If I like the look of the ship, and I like what it will do in the game, I will buy it, whether I know it as a Star Wars ship or not.

If I don't like the look of the model, and I don't think I will use it in a game, I won't buy it, even if I do know the ship from EU.

I have no interest in EU or any of the ships, but I am very excited about Wave 4 from a gameplay perspective. I am a fan of the original films and that's where my love of the lore ends, but this game has proved to be very enjoyable and I will continue to buy any new EU ships as long as they are fun to play with.

I would worry about some of the new ships not being recognizable... If the game sucked and the universe was the only reason I played. But the game is awesome so I don't even care if they come out with a naboo starfighter (the lamest ship in starwars) if it brings something to the game, i'll get it

I dunno, man, you've already got two HWKs in there...

I play the game. If the game comes out with new pieces, I'm there. I don't care which source material they came from.

Case in point: I've never encountered the E-Wing outside of this game. I played Rebel Assault II, so I know of the TIE Phantom, and I've played TIE Fighter, so I know of the Z-95 and the TIE Defender. I have nostalgic ties to those ships.

But I don't have nostalgic ties to the E-Wing, and yet I'm going to buy at least one because it's a new expansion to the game, and I like the game. That's what's most important to me.

I don't know anything about the K-Wing aside from what I've read on Wookieepedia, but if it was planned for this game, I'd buy it. I wouldn't limit myself and my gameplay opportunities.

I'll pick up a defender because I love how it looks and want a beastly imperial ship, and MAYBE a Phantom because the cloaking sounds interesting, but otherwise I am done... I love my collection as is, and don't particularly want to add to it with the non traditional ships.

To each their own!:)

If you don't like EU, then you should stop using about 90% of the pilots. Stop equipping shields to the small ships. The Falcon was more maneuverable than the TIE Fighter (Han navigates through the asteroid field but 4 TIE fighters fail to do the same). Even Leia pilots the Falcon while Han and Chewie try to fix the hyperdrive. Heck, they don't even return fire even though they have a turret.

I mean, even the original movies had ships on fire in the void of space.

I think everyone should take it all with a grain of salt and enjoy an excellent game of spaceship combat, regardless if they were from a movie or not.

One of the beautiful things about this game is the fact that if you want to stop buying ships, you can. Wave 1 ships are still in use everywhere. Nothing has been replaced by a newer ship.

the y wings could use a few more pilots though... cough

the y wings could use a few more pilots though... cough

And EPT's.... and bomb slots.

I love starwars, but im old school and dont follow the EU or even rate the 3 prequels.

This.

I'm only new to this .. but when considering future purchases I don't even consider the EU stuff.

Maybe my position will change after more game play ... maybe.

Could be we please stop using the "if you don't like the EU, you shouldn't use X"? It is such a terrible argument, only meant to provoke someone who apparently doesn't like something you like.

As for me, I love me some EU. Even the stuff I don't know, like the Phantom.

And without the EU you expected the game to go where? Endless repaints releases? The more EU the better!

Won't stop me. Hardcore EU fan here, rate some of those above most (5/6) of the Star Wars movies themselves. All of these ships are awesome, ships that I have been waiting for since I got into this game.

Even if I hate the ship, I still would get it because I enjoy the GAME, not just because I enjoy the UNIVERSE. Until something comes out that truly breaks the game, I'm a'gonna keep on buying.

I tend to approach this from a gameplay perspective. As many previously have said, and said well, for most of us it's not a case of Trilogy vs EU. Just because something appeared in movies doesn't make it innately better in the game and vice versa. The game is a different take on the ideas and themes and universe that we all love. The game itself, by existing, is Extended Universe. And that's ok.

Is it ok to stop buying models and just keep the fleet you have happy and safe, ignoring everything else? Yes. Though you'll play against others who do get those ships. Do you have to get them? No, the game is balanced enough that you can ignored pretty much everything that comes along. And I can respect that. You'll still be competitive.

For me, that's not an option. You know me, I make lists. I make interesting lists and I take the unloved children of this game and find new ways to play with them. The Lambda was ripe territory with all those interesting upgrade slots. I find new uses for old toys, like putting Draw Their Fire on a Y-Wing to be a damage sponge. Do all my ideas work? Not by a long shot. But the only thing that keeps me going is constantly innovating. If I were to stop picking up the new ship because of some arbitrary delineation, whatever that might be and however well logically and emotionally supported, I would soon leave the game. Not because I would be frustrated with contamination or trying to keep up with new toys or from envy, but because I would stop innovating. The moment that happens is the day I begin to leave this game. So, for me, stopping at any point is not an option.

Nostalgia for Star Wars was broken for me the moment I saw Episode 1. It drove a railroad spike into that part of me that loved Star Wars. This game helps repair it, but I will never love the series as much as I once did. So I'm not stopped by nostalgia. But I can respect and admire those whose love of Star Wars was not broken by the prequels. I can respect those who loved the prequels even. The great thing about this game is that we each come to it from diverse backgrounds with diverse loves and interests and ideas. That's what's so cool about it.

In short, if you stop buying the EU ships, that's fine. but I urge you to consider why you don't want those ships. Consider if you would be happy settling down with a list and being happy for it for months or years. If yes, awesome. I couldn't do it, so it even impresses me. But for me and many of us, the answer is no.

Sorry if my post rambled on a bit.

Will continue. I think skepticism about the EU is healthy to have but in terms of units on the table it would be nice for the Empire to have access to the better performing starfighters of other areas. Crunchy TIEs all the time is disappointing. TIE/Ds and TIE/Ad are really nice to have in place of the legions of expendables.

Without the EU or travelling back in time I'd say this game is pretty much done. I mean how many of the "original" trilogy's starfighters haven't been made? I guess they could add an Escape Pod which prominently appeared in the movies but beyond that you have the handful of fighters on either side.

I do worry that diving into the EU will bring out some ships I've never/rarely heard of but as long as the competitive ships can stay that way I'm all for new ships. Now those new ships can bring in new ways of playing and I honestly don't care if any new ships have stats that mostly match old ships.

Honestly I've always found this mentality odd. IF I like how a ship plays I will buy it because this is a game representing Star Wars. They've basically taken every fighter size craft of note out of the movies already, adding EU stuff is kinda nescessary. That said, I adore the EU ships in a way the Trilogy ships just cannot fulfill. Everybody has seen Star Wars. But the Tie phantom and the hawk. Those are mine by right of playing the games they were from. They feel more personal.

That said, the fact they fit the dichotomy of my gaming personality as being supportive or super agile is also really nice.

Definitely holding off on the E-wing to see how many to get. Will be getting 3 phantoms and a defender or two though

I love all things Star Wars including most of what is formerly known as the EU. However, wave 4 is pretty much the last of all the non-capital ships that I have any attachment to or nostalgia for. The Assault Gunboat and the Outrider are the only ones left I can think of that I'd really like to see in the game. In my opinion, most of the other EU ships don't have the Star Wars look to them. There is nothing inherently wrong with them, they just look like generic sci-fi ships to me. I don't have any animosity towards them.

That being said, I also love this game. I am very happy with what FFG has done, especially with bringing in the EU ships I adore. I would happily buy any other ships they produce, even ones I have no particular attachment to. I have no doubt that they would be as balanced as the current ships. The only question is if I would buy them in the same quantities as I have with the ones so far.

I am very much looking forward to what they have up their sleeve, just please make a huge Imperial ship first. :)

I dunno, man, you've already got two HWKs in there...

yep. pretty much bought those for the recon specialist. havent really played them and not planning to play both in the same list netime soon.
