HLC + rerolls

By Blail Blerg, in X-Wing Rules Questions

If I shoot HLC and I have a TL or Jonus and the rerolls come up as "crits" do I change them to "hits"?

Nope. The de-crittening has already occured.

The first thing you do after rolling with HLC is to change all the crits to hits. That does not take effect again during any further modification of the dice. Rerolls on the HLC can generate crits. They can be modified in other ways to crits. It's just the initial roll that you lose the crits out of.

One of my favorite setups is:

Omicron Group Pilot + Engine Upgrade + HLC + Mercenary Co-Pilot + Mercenary Co-Pilot + Fire Control System.

Here, you roll attack. At range 3, you then change two hits to crits. If you have TL, you can reroll dice or if you have focus change eyes to hits (even before you en-critten them). It can be really mean when you have Hit-Hit-Crit-Crit at range 3.

I prefer Adv Sensors to FCS here, as it phenomenally opens up the usage of your "Stop" maneuver.

Basically, you want to be at Range 3.

  1. If they may or may not be in range, hit the Parking break.
  2. If it turns out that they are still out of range, Adv Sensors to Boost, then park.
  3. Whammo.

It also gives you the ability to boost before doing a red Turn, making up for the lack of koiogran somewhat, but that's neither here nor there.

Omicron Group Pilot + Engine Upgrade + HLC + Mercenary Co-Pilot + Mercenary Co-Pilot + Fire Control System.

Interesting set-up. Would like to try that some day. (soon)

What do you run with this?

Ok, so Engine Upgrade is absolutely critical on all but a Vader Shuttle. It allows you to boost, which means that you can make up for the dial and become the largest interceptor in the game, adept at flanking and escaping combat. Quite important and turns the albino void manatee into a serious threat.

HLC gives you 4 attack dice at all ranges, and denies them the extra evade die at range 3. This can mean quite a bit of pain is coming their way. However, any crits on the initial roll are converted to hits.

Mercenary Co-Pilot allows you to change one hit to a crit at range 3. Two of them for double the fun. This means you can easily end up with 2 hits 2 crits on a shot at range 3. Which against unshielded targets is terrible. Even best case, a standard TIE Fighter or Interceptor is taking a crit they can ill afford to eat.

FCS allows you to target lock after each shot, so the next round you can continue pounding on them. Granted, you are unlikely to be at Range 3, but TL can seriously increase such damage.

I do agree with Dracon above about Advanced Sensors being quite viable too.

I'm so looking forward to Wave 4 as I will have a whole new shuttle concept to try out.

OGP + Ion Cannon + Tactician + Tactician + Engine Upgrade. 32 points (35 with Advanced Sensors) and at range 2, your target gets 2 stress. Plus the chance of being ioned. And if you can keep them at range 2? Even if they evade the ion they'll be dealing with an incredible stack of stress.

I've been considering stacking Merc Co-Pilot with Tactician, to make sure that they're screwed at any range, but doubling down with an Ion seems a great thing to do as well.

Sable, how do you feel about FCS on the Shuttle?

I feel biased towards it because it seems to give me a free TL (a good thing!) and more attack power (a good thing too!), but i feel theoretically that its against an opponent that might not really show up again to be attacked. Out of arc or dead by focus fire/higher PS fire next turn.

Then again, I don't have engine upgrades, so I've been playing without them on my shuttle.

Also, how do you feel about this list in terms of flying:

OGP FCS

OGP FCS

OGP Vader

Soontir + PTL

Blail: FCS + Gunner + EU is Sable's traditional shuttle-build, and it's a beast if your local meta isn't heavy on the B-Wings.

The trick is that FCS gives you a TL that you can spend on the gunner'd shot!

Yes. I meant in other places than this.

Also, on Jendon for passing TL? It seems a bit weird, because then the next turn you just focus with Jendon.

In general, I'll toss on FCS if I don't have the points for Sensor Jammer, but I can't justify FCS when Sensor Jammer is only 2 more points.
