New plastic finish for all tokens and dails??

By e6r6i6c, in X-Wing

Hi all

I was just popping out the tokens of my new rebel transport, and one of the stress tokens did not come out clean, and stuck to it was a very thin piece of clear plastic. So I got excited because it looks like they have used a very thin clear plastic protective layer for all the new tokens and dails. I compared it with some of the tokens/cardboard from my 2nd falcon I still had in the box, and I could see the difference pretty clear.

This is a quick picture I made with my phone, on the left you see where the thin layer of plastic tore of, and on the right you see a older piece of cardboard, you can see they are pretty different.

I am pretty excited about this, cause when the game came out, my first maneuver dials worn out pretty quick and since then I applied a clear coat plastic layer to all of them, but it was alway a lot of work to do this. Would this mean the tokens and especialy the dails are more durbale to wear and tear? I would love to have a official respons about this improvement, and I hope to see this on all the new ships.

personally i wish i had enough folks around here that my dials WOULD be wearing down...lol

Nice! I was considering covering my movement dials with a “MACtac” type clear adhesive material because my x-wing dial is definitely wearing down. If new movement dials are being covered with this stuff it should increase the longevity. =)

I noticed this right away as well: they have a nice slippery but solid feel to them now that they didn't before. I approve~

Stuff from the Core sets seems to wear far faster than anything else I've gotten. And since I got the core set and expansions pretty much at the same time, it isn't like it's longevity in my hands.

Ok, I'm glad I wasn't going crazy and that they have a different feel to them. Good to see this being applied on their end

Never noticed, what are you people doing to your dials?

I did exactly this to the inside faces of my dials, just as a precaution. In my experience though, it is the outside of the dials that see the most wear and tear, and the wear on unprotected inside faces are usually not too bad.

I automatically gloss coat all of the cardboard bits in any game I get now to protect from wear and spills. I also use a wide-tipped sharpie to color the edges black. Looks much better.

For the dials, I get 5/8" nylon washers from the hardware store to put in between the two discs. It keeps the discs from rubbing against each other at all, and the plastic center piece still holds it all together just fine.

@Gullwind, yeah but if this is the way FFG is going to make all the tokens and dails, there is no need for you to do all that stuff.

I tested it some more, and I took the cardboard from the Rebel transport, and I rubbed it as long and hard as I could with my thumb and it did not display any wear or tear, after that I took the cardboard from my 2nd falcon, and did the same thing, and I could rub of the print pretty easy. So thats confirmed, now let's hope this is the new way they will keep producing future tokens and dails, because now I don't have to apply a plastic coat to protect the dials anymore. Kudos to FFG.

I do think it's a little bit weird that they did not mention this anywhere. So still hope someone from FFG will confirm this.

I will probably still do it, because I like having a consistent finish on the tokens, plus the gloss coat protects the edges as well.

Maybe I don't play enough, but my original core set was bought over a year and a half ago and it doesn't show any wear and tear at all... lol..

I put the clear contact paper on all my dials. And the focus and evade tokens. And the seismic bomb thing. And ALL the other stuff (including the ship numbers).

My X-Wing Miniatures collection isn't just mine to play with, it's gonna be a family heirloom!! :)
