Installing X-Wing and TIE Fighter PC Games!

By Stinger07, in X-Wing

Hey all, I know there has been a lot of discussion about installing the old PC games, and I know that many of you have pointed out it is not available on steam. But it is still available!

A few months back, the Internet Archive released a Pack-In CD archive, and in it were both X-Wing and TIE Fighter collectors editions.

Without further ado, check out my install guide with download links!

Also, let me know how I can change/update the guide.

Very cool. Does anyone know how to get the Windows version to install on a Windows 7 pc with a 64 bit processor. The executable loads and plays the intro, but my computer won't run the install program.

I do. I installed all three of the games (X-Wing, TIE Fighter, X-Wing Alliance) recently on Win7 Ultimate x64. When I get home, I'll provide instructions (if I remember)

Awesome. I recently dug out my old copy of TIE Fighter Collector's edition and would like to get around to installing it. I also have Win7 Ultimate x64. I'm pretty sure there is a write-up on the web somewhere from a few years back...

If you have the DOS/Windows version of TIE Fighter collectors (1995 copyright) then just use my guide, otherwise, good luck!

I have the Windows 95 version, NOT the DOS version. They install differently, from what I have read.

[edit: Win 95, not 3.1]

I've been looking for these, thanks! You are a gentlemen and a scholar!

yea, there are instructions if you google, though I don't remember exactly where. I do know you can get the win95 tie fighter running on win7x64, but I also discovered that if you use Crossfire/SLI for your video cards, you may have video problems. You'll have to disable once you want to play.

Thank you, I'll have to try to install these this weekend! Does anyone know if there are graphics or gameplay differences between the DOS version and the Windows version?

I believe the Win95 Collector's edition used the improved graphics in the XvT engine. In addition to having better texturing, I remember it having.... wait for it.... 640x480 resolution! *gasp*

If you play X-Wing Alliance .. this site is a must.

You know, I can't help but think that since Disnay now owns the IP, and they like to make money, that someone there has to realize that re-releasing the X-Wing games (not to mention the original theatrical release of 4,5, and 6) would be a license for them to print money.

EDIT: My typing sucks.

I know that! I download and install file (InstallShield Wrapper.zip) from first message this forum http://www.old-games.ru/forum/showthread.php?t=61789

But, in fact I still have a problem with my videocard (ASUS Radeon R7 260x 2 GB). I can run this games only without 3D accelerator :-(

I have a working version of this game, but my joystick doesn't work with it for some reason. I got some mapping program for it, but they want 25 bucks just to be able to use it right. The stick cost that much, and the idea of paying more than 50 dollars just to play a game made in '95 was more than i could rightly justify.

Incidentally, if anyone is really good at getting joystick mapping programs to work, let me know.

waiting for battle front on Xbox one..... THAT should be epic!!

I don't think the graphics were improved but the Win95 X wing game includes the B wing and 2 more campaign tours. These were not in the floppy disk version of the game.

whats a floppy disc??? lol

To me the Collectors Edition DOS version of TIE Fighter was the far superior version compared to the Win95 version.

The graphic engine was different but I prefer the looks from the DOS Coll. Edition (your taste may vary) but it was the music that really made the difference. If you've played both you will know what I mean... Standard Starwars music in the Win95 edition (and that's ok I guess) but vastly better custom made dynamic musical score in the DOS version. It tracked everything you did and adjusted the music. I have never before or since heard a better way of delivering game music.

Swedge: seriously? :) Let me google it for you !

This is really awesome, memories coming back to life :)

Ah, the memories.

I remember shoving multiple floppy disks into my computer to install x-wing only to be blown away at the scale and awesome graphics (ha). Flash forward a few years later and I can still remember unwrapping tie fighter as a birthday present. That game quickly became the best pc game I ever played.

Have you heard about the X-Wing Alliance Upgrade mod? A guy named Darksabre got onboard and made a total conversion for XWA changing it to either the original X-Wing or TIE Fighter games with all the fancy new widescreen 1920x1080 graphics that make you drool. I absolutely loved it, the only problem I found was that I couldn't save my campaign progresses, so every time I started it up again I had to start over.

It didn't work for me. When I get to your imgmount D:\ C:\OLDGAMES\ISO\XWINGCD.ISO -t iso -fs iso I can't find the image. I've got the collecter's CD in my hand and yet it's so far away from playing!

... wait if you have the original cd, why are you mounting an img?

well.. does the file C:\OLDGAMES\ISO\XWINGCD.ISO exist on your pc? The iso file you download from that site is named differently, so the best thing is to rename it to XWINGCD.ISO and put it in the given folder

Also, if you simply want to play using your cd, don't bother with image mounting and use cd drive mounting instead.

I am on my phone right now, so I can't find the commands easily, but Google docs box cd drive and you'll find it.

I have had no issues using this method, but let me now how it goes!

I'm assuming DOSBox a virtual machine pre-configured to run DOS. If so then if you're having problems a simple (ish) solution would be to install another virtual machine programme like VirtualBox and create a VM running DOS manually.
