Wingman on Rebel Aces A-Wings?

By SpaceDingo, in X-Wing

So the man of the hour:

Green Squadron Pilot

-PTL

-Wingman

-A-wing Test Pilot

-Chardaan

So based on how you can chain swarm tactics, can you chain wingman? In this case I could take 4 A-wings, all with wingman, and as long as they all start the combat phase within range 1 of each other they would in effect get stress free PTL. Can anyone tell me if I'm incredibly wrong?

That will work just fine. And it's not even "chaining" Wingman. Each one is executing independently of the others. As far as that goes, if you fly them in two pairs, then they can clear their wingman, and you dont' have to worry about a formation of A wings.

Thanks Khyros. Evil thoughts a brewing...

Just be aware that 4x GSP w/ Wingman + PTL isn't going to be that good of a build. You have 8 points remaining, which can't be used on missiles (though I suppose one could carry a missile instead of the refit)... so you're looking at 2 shields, one on each lead wingman?

Regardless of how you spend those last 8 points, at the end of the day, you'll be throwing 8 dice, which is horrible.

I wouldn't really consider just throwing 8 dice, just working the proof of concept in my head. I like the idea of using it as a support ship. That Green only runs 22 points so its pretty easy to fit in. Boost makes it pretty easy to stay within range one of someone you need to drop stress. The most I would run is probably two on the flank together.

You know, I'm much more interested in running Predator on A-Wings instead of PTL. With your 2 dice attacks, it's effectively having permanent TL. Then, you can focus every turn. All without getting a stress. Then, if you want to up your damage, take Opportunist or Outmaneuver. The former does cause stress but that's ok. The latter reduces their agility dice, leading to more damage getting through.

Predator is so, so good.

Wingman, IMO, is much more valuable when you pair it with ships that have trouble shedding stress (A-Wings do not), especially when wanting to have stress-inducing abilities on those ships. For example, Wingman to help PTL/Opportunist B-Wings. A's shed stress so easily that it seems like a wasted opportunity when Outmaneuver, Predator, or the like exist to help amp up their minimal damage.

Bit off topic but once aces comes out a 5 A-Wing Swarm of GSP with Refit + Predator comes to 100pts. They essentially become the rebel version of TIE Swarm + Howlrunner without having to stay within R1 of the "mother Hen". IF you drop down to a 4 ship formation it leaves you with 20pts of other upgrades. Wingman + Opportunist would probably be one of the better Wingman combinations since it allows K-Turns for a pair of A-Wings and if one of the other ships is Wes or someone who can strip tokens easily then you would make the most of opportunist.

I like the idea, but I'd probably try predator and outmaneuver, personally.

I started a thread a while back about using PTL with Predator. It essentially means you get TL, Focus, and Evade in a single round, which gives them respectable firepower while still keeping them tanky. The issue I'm running into is how to outfit some of the other support A-Wings (or any "support" ships for that matter). How many should get outmaneuver (probably at least 1) and how many should get wingman (maybe 1)?
