So a lot of Epic team events, a large Escalation tournament, and the big daddy Nationals. I dunno, I guess I was hoping there would be some smaller dogfighting events I might be able to play in without dedicating the whole weekend to it. Epic and escalation appeal to me not at all.
Gen Con Events - Anyone else disappointed?
Aside from the quick start rules the only official formats they have are the 100, Escalation, and Epic. What else were you looking for?
There are Dogfights every two hours beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday, plus two on Sunday at 10 a.m. and noon.
I think it's OK. FFG only has so much staff to work these things. It would have been nice to have some non-team epic games, though, just for variety.
I was going to say I saw many X-Wing events at the Con.
I really wish i could go this year. First year in 10 that i'm missing...

I'm not exactly certain. Basically, 100 point games that weren't committing an entire day to the event.

I suppose my ideal would have been little four-person mini tournaments or something. Not for some official prize or award or anything, just for kicks.
I understand that they have limitations on people and such. I guess in my dream world I would have like to have seen less Epic events and a little more variety in 100pt options - that is what X-Wing is to me. Just play with some folks outside your local meta but not spend forever doing it. There's always a chance of pickup games I suppose.
I also hate that the Thursday 100 pt tourney starts at 11:00, which is prime Hall time for me. And you can't pre-reg for flight 2 on Friday, just show up with generics and hope for the best. I know why this has to be, it is just hard to schedule the rest of the con around these events.
Edited by GiraffeandZebraThe "dogfights" they have listed are actually large scale multiplayer scenarios. There are Dogfights every two hours beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday, plus two on Sunday at 10 a.m. and noon.

Have you ever gone to GenCon? There will be so many X-Wing players there you can get in games until your hearts content.

Last year was my first year and I had just started getting into x-wing at the time. I was mainly into boardgames. I'm sure there will be plenty of x-wing players there, of course. But pickup games (for boardgames at least) I found to be...awkward. Unless you met someone through some other means through life or earlier in the con, or it was at an event, there wasn't much jumping into a game with people you'd never met. I'm a social guy and not afraid to converse with any random person, but I'm not likely to just out and walk up random people and ask if they want to play x-wing. (Unless there was a place where people just typically met for such pickup games, then yeah, I would).
I've never been, and sadly won't be able to go this year, but if I were going and was hoping to just play a random game of X-Wing with some friendly people I would set up my ships and a play mat with everything ready to go, then put up a sign that simply read "Anyone up for a game of X-Wing?". Then just chill taking in the sights and sounds, maybe surfing this forum while I waited.
Maybe it's goofy, maybe seems strange, but if I were going alone and not meeting anyone and my intention was to play some 100-point games, that's what I would do.
