Attack of the sponge asteroids!

By Icareane, in X-Wing

My take on 3D asteroids, inspired by Jokerounet for the sponge technique and RodentMaster for the bases.

There is a magnet in the base to allow removal for transport and during a game, and both sides of the asteroid can be used in a competitive setting.

Quick tutorial on the blog : http://rule37-ica.blogspot.fr/2014/05/x-wing-attack-of-sponge-asteroids.html

Those look great!

wow. I want some of those. Very nice.

Awesome!

Might redo my astroids after seeing these!

Well done!

I find lava rock and gunmetal colored plasti dip to do the trick too. Basically I used some of the extra rods that come with the ships and hot glued them to the lava rock. Then I found some plastic bases that I was able to stab the rods into and hot glue those. Then I sprayed everything with gunmetal plastidip. Did a couple of layers and they look pretty darn good

Can you show the magnet setup? I've been thinking about doing something like this. I love the radar sweep!

@Radzap: I did a quick tutorial on my blog in signature but here is a picture of the setup:

There is only one magnet per asteroid.

I drilled a hole in the cardboard asteroid with a 5mm handdrill, cleaned the edges with a hobby knife and glued the magnet in the hole with superglue. You can see the result before painting in the picture above.

The 1 cent euro coins used for the stand are copper plated steel which is strongly attracted to the rare earth magnet in the base.

Very nice, good job :)

I like the sponges, you can really do small clusters of small asteroids on a single base :D

That is genius.

My lava rock asteroids plan is now in the trash.

I love how sharp those sponge asteroids look! I mean, literally sharp! They look very dangerous to fly into.
