Pain Train

By Ribann, in X-Wing

Played on Vassal the other night with a friend who was testing out some of the unreleased Rebel Aces. His build, iirc, looked like this:

Wes Janson

Keyan Farlander+Adv. Sensors+Opportunist+HLC

Biggs+Hull Upgrade

When we got into range, he shot with Wes Janson. He stripped a focus on my ship. Then Keyan, (who had TL'd my ship prior) stepped up with a ridiculous combo:

1) Use Opportunist to roll an extra attack die making it FIVE attack dice with HLC and takes a stress.

2) TLs any blank rolls

3) Removes the stress he put on himself and turns all his focus results into hits.

4)....

5) Profit!

Talk about making the dice work for you, approx. 90% of the time he was able to get perfect results.

He kept Biggs at range 3, obviously.

So my question: is this build perfectly viable? It almost seemed too good to be true. I think I need some clarification on when/if Keyan uses Opportunist with his ability.

Cheers!

Yeah, he is kinda broken...

Seems legit to me. And people think Farlander's not broken.

That's kinda nasty.

It's the first time I think that I've seen something work that well in combo on a single ship. Keyan rolls an extra attack die and gains the benefit of a Target Lock and Focus each round.

And since Wes can remove a focus or evade token on each attack, and you normally only get one of those in a round, it's almost a guaranteed combo.

And Wes and Keyan are safe as long as Biggs is close by.

I might have to try this combo.

Sounds deadly. It would be interesting to try this vs.

Whisper + VI + ACD + FCS

Vessery + VI

RGI + PtL

Sure, its good, but I don't think its necessarily broken. How does Keyan make sure he always has a stress token? Red maneuvers? Well, then his flying becomes more predictable and easier to outmaneuver to make sure he has no shot. Not a perfect solution, but it does bring things back to being about skill and outmaneuvering. Interceptors can handle it, maybe, or an opposing list with some ion. It depends too much on one specific ship always having a shot. It may win jousts but I've never enjoyed that style of flying anyway.

Opportunist gives him the stress token as long as the target has no focus or evade token, thanks to Wes.
