Help with a game for tonight

By BCooper85, in X-Wing

Hey guys,

So, my friend yesterday bought a core set, two interceptors and an advanced. He used all 5 TIEs against my 3 X-wings and demolished me.

Apart from focus firing(which I didn't yesterday) what else should I be doing against this?

He's coming round again tonight and I want to give myself as good a chance as possible, I was thinking Luke with R2, Wedge and Garven with Protons to start with?

Should I try to take Vader out first?

Cheers.

With 3 X-wings you should make one Biggs and force your opponents to target him first. A Wedge, Luke, Biggs build can work.

Play with asteroids and force him to follow you through them. Definitely focus fire ships. Vader can be hard to destroy sometimes, though if you focus fire him it might work fine. I'd actually suggest taking out all the other ships first but that's my preference.

Well if you’re only flying 3 X-Wings I would suggest something similar to the below list:

Wedge, Push the Limit

Luke, Push the Limit, R2-D2, Shield Upgrade

Biggs, Shield Upgrade

Fly them close together so they remain within range 1 of Biggs (with Biggs at the back). Use Push the Limit to Target Lock and Focus. Concentrate your fire and kill 1 at a time - Kill the biggest threat or the easiest target first.

Good luck!

Thanks guys, I did pick up some extra cards last night from 0Dark on here so I'll go through what I've got and see what I can do :)

Focus fire the intercepter first.

They are glass cannons.

They hit the hardest, but they are mighty fragile.

Vader and the ties don't hit as hard. Id save vader for last. If you take out the intercepter, then go for his ties. They are weaker, and have less hp, and no Shield, so a critical hit will have a better chance of hitting

Learn how to fly in formation is you haven't already

Crashing into yourself denies you actions, and keeping a tight formation can be easier said than done.

Thanks Krynn, I'm going to go through it all in a minute and practice some formation flying.

Try out a solo training mission - fly your list against static 'training dummies' that can fire at your ships, but don't move, that way you can practise flying manoeuvres, enemy firing arcs and getting used to the actions, such as TL and focus.

If all else fails, swap sides and see how you fare with the Empire!

Well have to sort out some friendlies games in a couple of weeks :)

Sounds good Matt!

OK this all sounds really good. I have the ships out on the table, Wedge with Luke to his right and Biggs behind Wedge. Can anyone give me some patterns to follow so Biggs stays behind Wedge as I'm having trouble working it out as he moves first.

Just been through the upgrade cards I have and this is what I've managed to cobble together.

Luke, Push the Limit, R2

Wedge, Proton Torpedoes

Biggs, Shield Upgrade

Just popped this in the squad builder and this is 97 points. Do I have that the right way round or should I move the cards about?

Move the shield upgrade with r2d2

And with 3 points open, grab some astromechs

I personally would drop the Torpedo to get R2F2 on Biggs, or the afformentioned Shield+r2d2, and more help to Wedge.

If you put all the power of PTL +R2 on Wedge, he will be a target, but he will rip fighters apart.

That leaves luke with 3pts for upgrading astromech, skill, or both.

What skills do you have?

Try:

Wedge PTL R2

Luke, Swarm Tactics, R2D2, Shield Upgrade

Biggs, R2F2

I'd move PTL to Wedge (Luke doesn't have as much use for focus because of his ability), drop the torpedoes and add R2D2 to one pilot and R2 to someone else.

And you can 'share' the upgrade cards if you only have the one copy - just make a note which 2 ships have Shield Upgrade on a Squad Sheet. FFG have a printable PDF, you can then use the single card as a rules reference

Torpedoes are a single use device. So unless there's a specific need to have them (eg a large ship with 4+ hull), the points would be better used on an upgrade which lasts for the entire game

Hey guys just wanted to let you know that I mullered my mate, I destroyed all his ships before he destroyed any of mine :D

That a boy!

Impressive, most impressive. The forum has taught you well

Now you need to switch sides next game and play Imperials against his X-wings!

To quote Han - "Don't get cocky Kid"

Send for reinforcements - get more ships!
