I could be making this up entirely but I'm sure I saw a vid where a guy did a barrel roll and then the maneuver he chose? It gave me the impression you could barrel roll before of after your maneuver?
Is that complete nonsense?
There are numerous ways a ship could do a barrel roll before it revealed its maneuver dial. It is normal to only do a barrel roll after completing your maneuver, during your "Perform Action" step of the Activation phase.
1) Advanced Sensors upgrade card. (in the Lambda box, used by B-wings and the shuttle)
2) Gaining a free action from a pilot/card ability (such as Lando's pilot ability in the falcon, the free action given by the upgrade card Squad Leader)
A ship, without a stress token, can use a free action when it is given, even if that is before their maneuver and it can happen before their normal "Perform Action" step of the Activation phase so a ship could do a free action then their normal action in one turn. A ship can do as many free actions as the number of action symbols it has on its ship card. Note: no ship may do two of the same actions in a round.
I'm guessing you saw a B-wing use Advanced sensors to barrel roll and then complete its maneuver.

Being very new to X-Wing chaps, I just wanted to ask about the advanced sensors card. Am I right in saying that if your ship has the sensors icon depicted in its upgrade section you can pick anytype of upgrade card of that type, such as the advanced sensors. I see in my newly purchased B-Wing expansion you dont get the advanced sensors with that pack.

Yes, for each symbol in the upgrades bar on the card, you may equip 1 upgrade of that type (showing the same symbol), which may come from any expansion available. In addition, each ship may equip 1 title and 1 modification.
At the moment, the advanced sensors card only comes in the Imperial Shuttle expansion.

Just as a heads-up, Advanced Sensors will come with the E-wing as well. A lot of people weren't happy about having to buy multiple shuttles to load up their B-wings; this should fix that.

As a minor tactical note here, Squad Leader has to be used on a pilot with a lower PS, so it couldn't be used to trigger a barrel roll before a ship has executed its maneuver. It's a frequently overlooked restriction and something I missed myself for a long time.

Preorder on a couple of E-Wings it is then. Sad when you just feel you have to get the shuttle model just to compliment your fleet though is it not, even if it is still just a pice of Imperial junk. LOL!

The Lambda is a truly terrifying vessel with the right upgrades in the right hands. I've done quite a bit of damage with it. And my 3 Albino Space Cow list has more wins than loses against all comers.
