This is a call for an X-wing video game

By Stone37, in X-Wing

I don't think there is anybody who would say no to a remake or revival of the old flight simulators. Part of the problem is nobody plays flight simulators anymore. How many of you have seen joysticks sold at Target or wherever?

This kind of points to a mentality in the industry that nobody plays these kinds of games anymore and it wouldn't be profitable to float one.

Now, it would be pretty cool if they redesigned the game using arcade mechanics. Something like a cross between a vehicle simulator and the flight mechanics from the battlefield games, yoked to a cohesive narrative story. But this would have to be authorized by LFL who are already gearing up for Episode 7. This wouldn't be FFG's thing anyway because video games are outside of thier scope, and they have much more important things to do anyway (like develop more board games and X-Wing expansions).

I will admit that X-Wing has on more than one occasion made me go back to the flight simulators, as I'm sure it's done for others. Because of this I want to see some of those old sim exclusives, particularly from TIE Fighter. The Defender is the best designed TIE In my opinion (Trilateral symmetry ftw!) and the Assault Gunboat was a nice change from the TIE Lineage without looking ugly. The Nebulon-B2, Assassin Corvette, and Space platforms were all really cool additions to the universe to help flesh it out and would be perfectly at home in X-Wing (well, the B2 is a bit big...).

Sadly most, if not all, of this was forgotten over the years. We haven't seen an Assault Gunboat in nearly forever and in spite of being nearly everywhere in the sims, DX-9 stormtrooper transports go without mention even after all the source books for EoTE.

I'm hoping somehow through X-Wing we can see the Assault Gunboat make a triumphant return from the forgotten bin over those horrid low-effort frankenTIEs like the Oppressor and Interdictor. It's been far too long since its been acknowledged and it's the perfect mass-production exception to the Empire's resistance to hyperspace raiders. If you need one craft to get it done, the Assault Gunboat was it even after the TIE/Ds appeared.

Even arcade shooters are dead, so I don't see much hope for older style simulators. Honestly, though, I'd be happy to see another Rogue Squadron game in the works, or even Crimson Skies. Especially Crimson Skies.

For a minute I thought this was a call to continue that glorious series that ended with X-Wing: Alliance

Three words: High. Definition. Remake.

Attack Squadrons is the light at this tunnel.

It would be fun however to be able to play X-wing minis on my phone against all you great guys, gals, and everyone in between. FFG should just make the mobile version cost $15. For the cost of a ship, we'd be able to take our strategies to test immediately.

I don't think it would stop us from buying the minis either, as that is the beauty of the game.

What chess player prefers the screen to the touch, feel, and space of a real board?

My interest in The Star Wars Universe has been reignited periodically over the years due to games like X-wing, the Star Wars battlefront series, and most dramatically X-wing miniatures. Each of these games, and I'm sure the many other games (of all varieties) y'all have played, are thankfully not interchangeable. I've even grown interest in FFG's RPGs.

It's a wonderful time to be Star Wars fan.

MtGO has shown that the online version has helped sales.

I for one would happily buy both, as I do with magic.

What if FFG released a PC version of this game, but to use a ship you had to unlock it by buying the miniature? Then they wouldn't lose sales, they'd probably actually GAIN sales.

Like entering your proof of purchase code to "unlock" the ship? and I love your sig btw

Thanks. Once I got into this game I just had to dig up a Thrawn quote for my sig on these forums. :)

Yeah something like that a proof of purchase. Something you can't see from outside the package of course.

Does anyone remember the Star Wars Trilogy Arcade Game? Pretty sweet game given the year and being a rails shooter.

First, Vassel.

Second, I'd like to see a better, official FFG version of Vassel, but it may detract from X-Wing miniatures sales

Finally, I would kill a list of several people submitted to me by LucasArts if that's what it took for them to redo the X-Wing/TIE Fighter computer games with new graphics/engine...

They could do it like Pokémon does with its official online collection/gameplay program: They include a card with a unique code in every booster pack. You input that code in the PC game, and it gives you a virtual booster pack in the game.

With X-Wing, with each expansion ship they could include a card with a code that gives us that particular ship and its upgrade cards in a PC game. For product that's already been sold without a code card, they could offer for us to send in our proof of purchase tokens in return for a code card.

By the way, LucasArts is completely dead, except for a few people who work on licensing. The development studio has been gutted.

Oh boy, do I have some good news for you.

Flight sims have been dead, but they're being revived! These are the top four, and I believe they're all slated to come out in the next year:

Star Citizen

Elite: Dangerous

EVE: Valkyrie

Enemy Starfighter

Unfortunately, none of these are Star Wars-related. We only have that browser game, Attack Squadron. But we can hope that one of Electronic Arts' secret Star Wars products is a flight sim — you never know.

It's not a terrible idea, but for many practical reasons, not the least of which that FFG doesn't have the Video Game license, this will not happen.

FFG doesn't have the technical facilities and staff to make such a game either.

They have, in the past, had what they would need to make a vassal equivalent. But yes, getting the rights would be tough. Still, I would love to just always have an online game of X-wing going with my brother that isn't stuck on my PC.

Is it bad I still run a windows 98 computer in my house solely for playing tie fighter?

I agree with others I enjoy it as a tabletop game. Having that social interaction makes it more enjoyable. At times in between game nights I do login to Star Wars Attack Squadrons ( http://www.starwarsattacksquadrons.com/# ) as a fan of tie fighter and Xwing it's fun.

I'm surprised that nobody mentioned Disney's Attack Squadrons before you. But then again, I see virtually no publicity on social networks, probably because getting into the beta is almost impossible.

At least non-US locations are now able to register for it.

EDIT: Beta gameplay: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-1qyu1fMSk

First I've heard of it. I'll have to check it out tomorrow (playing X-Wing today!;p)

Nope. You're living the dream, sir.

My parents jumped from a 95/NT-Vista man were they in for a shock.

A streamlined (IE more developed/automated/better interface) version of the X-wing version of Vassal would be amazing, but I fear if online minis gaming becomes too popular it will replace the in person minis games which while sometimes it will be nice I still like the feel of moving ships on the table

Oh yes! It was in our local bowling alley and I played it every time. So much in fact that I memorised all the attack patterns and would move the to the target before it was there.

I also developed a method a spamming the trigger so fast that the AT-ST was destroyed before it get off one shot.

Suffice to say I filled the scoreboard.....

Great times :)

Where are the next gen console X-wing games. Pilot a fighter through 'x' number of missions, simple. Or an update of the PC version. Seems like a no brainer... is the license too expensive for a company to even consider it??? :(

We are expecting a new Star Wars Battlefront at E3.

they need to remake the old rogue squadron games...

Is it an actual multiplatform Battlefront or one of those PSP only ones? Disney would make me feel multiplatform, too much money left on the table from people unwilling to buy a new system just for one game, but you never know

Looks like another opportunity to plug Star Citizen. :D

I was all in until I realized it was an MMO. Then I decided NOPE! Cool looking, but I prefer my games to not require me to put up with other players... That's what Tabletop games are for.

Star Citizen will have a PVP slider in which you can set it so you have a very low chance of meeting other players and a higher chance of encountering AI.

Also, Star Citizen will allow you to run private servers, so you could play through the universe with just you on there, or you and any of your friends.

Lastly, there's a story campaign portion of Star Citizen called Squadron 42, which you can play by yourself or cooperatively with a few friends.

Trust me, Star Citizen will not be your average MMO. Oh, also: No monthly fees and no pay-to-win schemes. You buy the game up front and you play it forever.

I generally cants stand the move towards MMO, but from what you've said they're doing it right :)

Hope it works well with a joypad though, I'd rather not have to use a keyboard+mouse or joystick/yoke.

I have dosbox for pretty much the same reason. X Wing, Tie Fighter, and Theme Hospital.

God I wish they'd port Theme Hospital to iPad! No graphical updates required!

X-Wing etc though, I want a whole new one!

Great game, still so much fun. You could try http://www.litchie.com/?page_id=123 if you are able to obtain a dos version of the game.

A new version of X-Wing would be great. I still don't really know how they managed to create so many different missions, and for the game to not seem repetitive (to me, anyway)
