This is a call for an X-wing video game

By Stone37, in X-Wing

Has anyone else thought about our favorite table top game as a video game? Before you say it couldn't be done, check out a game called Steam Birds. Go ahead, I'll wait. =)

So? Can you see an X-wing game now for your mobile phone, Xbox Arcade, or any other platform?

How about it FFG?

Isn't this called Vassal? Although Vassal on Android would be Beast! That I would like to see.

As soon as I saw X-wing I thought of Steambirds. Very similar mechanic.

Ok, well for starters, x-wing very much seems like the designers were trying to make a tabletop version of the old x-wing and tie fighter video games. So there kinda already is.

Otherwise, I am not familiar with steambirds, but x-wing is remarkably similar to wings of glory, and Sid Myers Ace Patrol seems like an almost direct port of that game to iOS and other platforms, and is a lot of fun, so yeah, it would be great.

For a minute I thought this was a call to continue that glorious series that ended with X-Wing: Alliance

Perhaps they should.

I also wouldn't object to an official online version (with better UI than vassal), akin to Magic:Online.

Hopefully star citizen at least stimulates some activity in the genre. I'm not sure it's the kind of space sim I'm really looking for, and the project is so ambitious I question if it will ever really be finished.

All I want is the focused campaign action from the old Star Wars PC sims

Wait until you see the simulator.

Vassal is clunky and not exactly common user friendly. This game has a system that could be translated to a joystick application.

Looks like another opportunity to plug Star Citizen. :D

I was all in until I realized it was an MMO. Then I decided NOPE! Cool looking, but I prefer my games to not require me to put up with other players... That's what Tabletop games are for.

Star Citizen will have a PVP slider in which you can set it so you have a very low chance of meeting other players and a higher chance of encountering AI.

Also, Star Citizen will allow you to run private servers, so you could play through the universe with just you on there, or you and any of your friends.

Lastly, there's a story campaign portion of Star Citizen called Squadron 42, which you can play by yourself or cooperatively with a few friends.

Trust me, Star Citizen will not be your average MMO. Oh, also: No monthly fees and no pay-to-win schemes. You buy the game up front and you play it forever.

My take is that X-Wing is a miniatures game first and foremost and it's a way to unplug and play games the old fashioned way. I prefer playing it board-game style and play face-to-face. I've grown tired of sitting at a keyboard and just clicking. Love the hands on and the interaction with your opponent. But that's just me.

Yeah, I read the title of this thread and thought 'there was a game, problem is it was twenty years ago.' :)

Anyway, I stumbled across this project a couple of years ago. I check in on it from time to time to see how it's progressing. It is a Star Wars version of the freespace 2 engine. It looks like it will be really good if it ever gets finished. The news section I'm linking to hasn't been updated in awhile but there is activity in the forums. So it is not dead yet.

5 hour layover in ATL? Who would like to be able to play some virtual X-wing?

First, Vassel.

Second, I'd like to see a better, official FFG version of Vassel, but it may detract from X-Wing miniatures sales

Finally, I would kill a list of several people submitted to me by LucasArts if that's what it took for them to redo the X-Wing/TIE Fighter computer games with new graphics/engine...

What if FFG released a PC version of this game, but to use a ship you had to unlock it by buying the miniature? Then they wouldn't lose sales, they'd probably actually GAIN sales.

The problem with that idea is that you can't make that secure very easily.

I agree with others I enjoy it as a tabletop game. Having that social interaction makes it more enjoyable. At times in between game nights I do login to Star Wars Attack Squadrons ( http://www.starwarsattacksquadrons.com/# ) as a fan of tie fighter and Xwing it's fun.

Like entering your proof of purchase code to "unlock" the ship? and I love your sig btw

I didn't know about Sid Meyer Ace combat! Now i'm downloading it via Steam! Thanks!

But i agree that table-top version is really cool, more exciting, more fun, lot of interaction with other people.

Also i agree that X-wing miniatures is the table-top version of X-wing vs Tie Fighter videogame, not viceversa :D

I'm surprised that nobody mentioned Disney's Attack Squadrons before you. But then again, I see virtually no publicity on social networks, probably because getting into the beta is almost impossible.

At least non-US locations are now able to register for it.

Once I created an account I was surprised how quickly I received access. Hopefully you can get in

You may have been lucky to register, right when they were handing out keys.

I've been registered for over a month, so I think the gates are closed for now.

This.

Yes. A billion times yes.
