FFG announces GenCon nationals will be three-day event

By Danthrax, in X-Wing

Interesting. I expect that most serious players would want to guarantee a spot, so would reserve their spot. But all reservations play the same day, and the second day is nothing but walkins.

Is that really how it's handled? That seems like it would create a disparity in the talent level of the 2 days.

Yes, it is. From the FFG article:

The Thursday flights for Android: Netrunner and X-Wing will accept event tickets that can be bought in advance (tickets go on sale on May 18th). These event tickets will reserve a place in the tournament for each person who buys one. If there is room in the tournament after all event ticket holders register with FFG on the day of the tournament, we will accept generic tickets for the Thursday flights.

The Friday flights for both games will accept only generic tickets. Generic tickets can also be bought in advance (tickets go on sale on May 18th), but they do not reserve a place for you in the tournament. Entrants who did not play in the Thursday flight will be accepted on a first come, first served basis in the Friday flight. Those who played in the Thursday flight will be accepted if there is space available.

So yeah, there might be a talent level disparity, although that may be mitigated by good players who didn't make it on Thursday walking up and getting into the Friday tournament (if there's room — in other words, if there aren't 128 new players who didn't play on Thursday, then Thursday players who didn't make Top 32 can play Friday).

Wow. Well I guess that ensures a full event because you know there will be plenty of people that would jump at the chance to play again Friday if they didn't get through the first time.

At first I didn't like the idea but it actually sounds pretty good. Lots of chances for people to play and advance.

One thing that I did not see listed:

Can players use a different Squad for each day? I assume the answer is yes.

It's all the same tournament so I would hope they would require you to stick with the same list.

Now that I grasp how the Thursday/Friday thing is set up I should revisit this.

I believe that if you enter on Thursday and make it through to the Saturday event that you would be required to keep that same list.

If you try and fail Thursday and reenter Friday then you should be able to use a new list. Again though, I think you should be required to continue with the same list that got you into Saturday.

I'm not sure you can participate in both flights. If you look the paragraph about the Friday flight it states:

"Entrants who did not play in the Thursday flight..."

This makes sense, after all. I assume they are running 2 flights in order to accommodate a larger tournament turnout. I think it is actually a 256 person tournament that is just split into 2 days. At least, that is how I interpret it. I assume they will take your name, maybe make you show an ID.

Also, assuming it is just 1 tournament split into 2 days, I don't see why you should be allowed to swap lists...

Ignore most of my post, I didnt read the last line...

Though, playing both Thursday and Friday DOES assume there will be space. I assume they will put you on a waiting list until non Thursday participants have finished showing up.

So if 128 players play Thursday, then all 96 players who didn't make Top 32 enter the Friday tournament, then 32 walkups fill the last slots Friday, we'd actually end up with a 160-person tournament.

(But this is extremely unlikely, as walksups get priority in the Friday tournament over returning players from Thursday's tournament. I just wanted to mention it as a point of interest.)

It would actually be only 32 walkins for the next day. Walkins have first priority for the next day. Seems unlikely.

That will be a LONG weekend of playing Xwing. Good luck to all of you brave enough to endure that. Too long for me without a nap or something, LOL.
