Target Lock ReRolls?

By Rinehart, in X-Wing Rules Questions

This is a really bizarre question, but it came up during a game last night.

When using the TL to reroll dice, do you have to state which dice you are going to reroll before you reroll any of them, or can you reroll one at a time decided as you reroll them?

Here was the situation. I was way behind. I was shooting 3 dice with TL at a 4 hull left firespray. I needed to go for big air and try to get some crits on the firespray. It was a hail mary play. I rolled Focus Hit Hit. So, I'm cleary going to Reroll the Focus, but the question that came up was, can I decide to reroll the Hits after I reroll the Focus? Had I rerolled the Focus into a Crit, I would have just stood pat and hope for a direct hit crit with no evades rolled by the firespray. But, if I had just rerolled that Focus into a Blank, Focus, or Hit, I would have rerolled the 2 hits to hope for 2 crits. Like I said, super hail mary extremely low percentage play, I know I know, but given the board I, I was going to lose anyway, so I needed to go for it.

Who would ever reroll hits, right? I don't want to debate if you should do that or not. You shouldn't. This was the fringe case that you would ever even consider such stupid strategy.

The question is (and maybe it's FAQ'd somewhere that I didn't see) how do you declare TL rerolls? Can you decide them one at a time as you reroll dice? Or, must you state which will be rerolled before any dice have been rolled?

We played it that I had to decide which dice I was rerolling ahead of time, because that felt like it had to be the correct interpretation, but we were far from sure.

Generally it's very obvious what dice will be rerolled, but in these fringe situations, clarity would be nice.

Anyone have a clear answer?

Re-roll all you wish to re-roll in one go, unless you have unlimited target locks. It's a single thing, not a series.

There's no rule about rolling all the dice simultaneously or individually. You decide how you should resolve your turn. I guess you should just tell your opponent how you're going to roll so he doesn't roll his defense dice before you finish your turn.

This seems like blatant stalling-tactics to me

You can physically roll the dice one at a time, but you still have to indicate which dice you're rerolling before rerolling any of them. At that point, I have to agree with DraconPyrothayan... rerolling one at a time instead of all at once seems like stalling to me.

From the rulebook under Modify Attack Dice:

Spending target lock tokens

If the attacker has a target lock on the defender, he

may return his pair of assigned target lock tokens

to the action token supply to (1) choose any number of

attack dice and (2) reroll them once (see “Combat Phase

Example” on pages 14–15).

(I added the numbered steps.)

I understand your strategy in that situation, but it is clear that you must choose how many dice you are rolling first - you cannot reroll one and then choose to reroll another based on the first result.

Thanks Ziggy. That looks pretty clear to me. I mean it had to work like that. But the situation I described has to be incredibly rare.

IF you have multiple Re-roll abilities you can choose to use them one at a time with the stipulation that you may not re-roll a die more than once.

If that "hail mary" was done by Han Solo you could spend the TL to reroll the [eye] result and after seeing how that turns out you could use Han's ability and reroll "all possible dice" which means the two [hit] results that you haven't already re-rolled. Howlrunner, Jonus, Horton, and Krassis also will work that way. For an extreme example if you have Krassis attacking with that Heavy Laser cannon with Jonus nearby a TL may be spent to reroll any number of dice, the ship's ability can be used to reroll one die, and Jonus's ability could be used to reroll up to two dice; long story short you could reroll the HLC dice 1,1,2 or some variation on that if you so desired provided you don't reroll a die more than once.

PS. When Munitions Failsafe comes out there may be a situation where one wants the attack to miss to trigger that modification. I don't recommend it but it is there.
