Forgery

By Split Light, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

This question may very well be answered in the books, but I don't happen to have a book handy. What skill would be used for forging up identification badges, or the like? I have a possible corporate infiltration coming up, and one method the characters could use is forging up some corporate ID badges.

Depends, if they are electronic, Computers. A physical document, I'd use Skulduggery probably.

Skulduggery.

Typically skulduggery, though specific scenario may require other skills, or other checks in addition to the initial one.

I've made a few fake IDs in my day. Technical aptitude is helpful, but the act of forgery is much more about Skulduggery than the computer skills. I'd allow Computers to enhance the check. Maybe a Boost die or something depending on what the PC was wanting to do.

If it's a door key card as well, or it has holder information in a bar code is why I refer to computers.

Yeah really depends. If it's like a code cylinder to fool Computer systems, I'd go Computers (or Skulduggery at +1 Difficulty). If it's an indenticard to fool people, I'd go Skulduggery (or Computers at +1 Difficulty).

You could make a skills challenge out of it. In true "Skill Monkey" style, you could combine a lot of skills in creative ways to do a forgery.

The actual forging of, say, an official document would be part of a Skulduggery check, while adding falsified information into a database would be Computers. Modifying a ship's transponder could be a combination of Computers and Mechanics.

But there's more to it than just sitting down and doing the forgery. Maybe an Education check will tell you how familiar you are with the document or the law surrounding it. An Underworld check could be used to figure out where to find the right equipment you'll need to do the forgery. Deception might be used to come up with legitimate sounding information for your forgery.

Any of these skills could be used to give you boosts or setbacks, or provide upgrades or downgrades to the difficulty. Of course, once you have the forged item, how will you use it? You could use Charm to sweet-talk your way into having the Imperial official accept it. Deception could be used to pass off that counterfeit 1,000 credit chit that you made without causing suspicion. Cool could be used to see if you sweat when the forgery is being examined for authenticity by that Hutt crimelord you're trying to bamboozle.

The main thing to remember, of course, is to make it fun, engaging, and narrative :)

Thanks everybody, very helpful. The badges would act as cardkeys, but the characters would have the option of leaving off the key part, and just try to fake there way past entries. I don't know how many times I've seen people at my own work forget their badge and just stand around waiting for somebody to open it so they could go in.

If they want to duplicate key privileges they'd probably have to steal a working card and duplicate it, or hack into the corporate security computers to get the information, and that will be a tough computers roll.

i think its at least skulduggery and computers you have to back up the forgery jus in case evenif you sweet talk the crap maybe after he walks away to check on a mark that that you missed in the forgery. forging infomation is not simple it take slow infiltration seeing if not acquiring the object you need.even then im not sure about the entire process but would say it would a series of checks
