Soontir build

By mrkyle, in X-Wing

Hey all, we know how Soontir is usually built, PTL plus Stealth. Has anyone crunched the numbers on this build vs the same but a hull upgrade rather than stealth. I know on lower agility hull is better and I'm leaning towards hull still with Soontir. Helps him not get one shot off a bad defence roll. Thoughts?

I think Hull is typically better. But Hull and Stealth might offer more durability for the points. I'm not sure. Stealth is hard to figure because it gets knocked off after the first hit.

That's always been my holdup with stealth too. One bad round of rolling (which is going to happen to me on the first time I have to do it) and the benefit is gone. I think I'd prefer Hull.

Soontir with PTL and the Target Lock mod. TL, boost, and focus _every turn you pull a green_.

Stealth has to be better than hull with the focus stacks, right?

Stealth works well on Fell due to you can have two focus tokens at the same time if you also have PTL. (evade, focus, stress, focus). However with Aces out I have found that Fell with Shield Upgrade and Targeting Computer and PTL is very hard to kill and VERY deadly at range one with four attack die locked and focused. Give Fell 2.0 a try and see what you think.

That sounds super sexy, keep talking to me that way and my wife might get jealous.

Hull DOES prevent those Range 3, 1-shot kills on Soontir. Above average numbers obviously can't protect you from rolling 5 blanks or blanks/focus after you spend your focus on previous defense rolls or on attack. 1 more hull CAN, however.

Said it before and I'll say it again: shield upgrade. Only used once, but in my experience the vast number of times it's been taken out, it cancelled a critical hit. You can't put a value on shrugging off a hit instead of taking Damaged Sensor Array with Soontir Fel.

I've run Hull on Soontir and all elite Interceptors since Aces. Worth it everytime. Targeting Computer makes Fel a nasty shot, too.

Soontir and PTL goes hand in hand beautifully as it is right now. The problem with PTL in the future, is that there'll be many counters for the predictable auto-stressed Interceptor.

Still, you'd want to get Soontir stressed for his ability to kick in, but I've been experimenting with keeping it at an absolute minimum:

Elusiveness instead of PTL, for defensive play:

Is useful for changing that crit, or just plain get an extra focus when defending. Especiallly if you got greedy and used your focus while attacking, or just plainly chose to evade instead.

Opportunist instead of PTL, for offensive play:

I haven't had time play around with this one myself, but I imagine it'll go well with Jax on the table. It's a little more dangerous, but being able to barrel roll out of arcs or evade, and still get an extra dice gift wrapped with a focus, should annoy your undefended opponent.

Cons:

- Both are situational.

- The turtling Soontir with PTL still feels, for the time being, superior on the table overall.

Pros:

- You will learn to fly harder with one action, and will relieve you of the auto-PTL mindset.

- You just opened up the whole of the dial as viable options, bringing some unpredictability over the stressed Interceptor.

- May or may not be better suited for the future, if stress is really that much of a thing to get punished, as they say it is.

I would just keep PTL on Soontir and not use it. The offensive ways to stress targets is either fletch torps or that droid, both of which requires Soontir to be within the firing arc. If Soontir can roll boost out of it, he will roll boost out of it. If Soontir cant roll boost out of it, he would take a single evade token, and ask politely if you want to fletch him now

Wingman. This has the lovely effect of a: shedding stress from Soontir after pushing the limit and b: giving new utility to Saber Squadron pilots or RGIs. They're the only ship that could really keep up with Soontir. (though trying to stay tight could potentially make your maneuvering a little bit more constrained than some players might like)

I quite like that idea. I at first misread wingman, assuming the stress come off right away, but since it's not until the start of combat, Soontir would still get his assigned focus token, then can go anywhere he wants if he's got a buddy close

Stealth is rather meh, in my opinion. One of our regular posters can testify to my failure to cancel one hit from five defense dice. :P The next turn, Fel died to a blaster turret from Kyle. Yeah, take the hull instead, unless you plan on stalling Fel and using him for the late game. What I mean by this is keeping him at R3 or further from the main furbal until a target gets isolated from the pack. Soontir, is a pretty brutal finisher, especially if he has TL. I almost think the TL is better on him than the Hull Upgrade because once you do that, you are essentially dedicating him to the finisher role.
