Running our 1st season tourney, some input please

By Rogue 4, in X-Wing

OK, some things I want to ask and make sure of before we start our first season tournament.

1) Does everyone use their own damage deck or do you share just one deck between the 2 players?

2) How long do you normally run a game? I know it can be 60,75, or 90 minute games, I am just curious what is the norm.

3) For the season tournaments, does anyone do anything special or unique? Meaning do you spread it over so many weeks, have it play as a normal tournament, etc..?

4) How do you give out the prize support that comes in the kit? We have the Captain Jonus kit.

Thanks for answering and giving an other information!

Everyone uses their own deck.

2) How long do you normally run a game?

I'd go with 75 minutes myself or even 90, but it depends on how many games you're going to play and how much time you got to play them.

!) yes. Damage deck has 33 cards, of which there are 2 each of everything and 7 direct hits

2) 1hr + extra time for 100pt games. Basically, at the 5min left mark, I would tell all players that after their current round, the next round would be the final round

3) I simply do a monthly tournament.

4) depends on the turnout. I try to make sure everybody gets something as far as possible, so everyone would walk home with at least 1 common alt art card and 1 plastic token, as far as possible. If you are the TO, remember to give yourself something too.

here are some funky tournaments I've hosted previously:

100pt tourney at BattleBunker to celebrate the release of the Imperial Aces. Standard 100pt tournament rules, with 3 rounds. Imperial Aces and the new stuff in it is NOT legal for this tournament. At the end of the 3 rounds, the top 2 players will take part in a contest of skills with specially prepared squads against all other players. The emerging champion shall be crowned the Imperial Ace, and will walk away with 1 set of Imperial Aces. *more details in a separate post*

All participants must prepare 1 rookie Xwing, on top of their own 100pt squads. $7 per person. First place prize is an Imperial Ace set. FFG official plastic tokens and etcetc for all.

Imperial Aces and the new stuff inside it (eg. hull upgrade, opportunist etc) will NOT be legal for this tournament.

The Contest of Aces

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
some fluff:
A Rebel scouting group has been discovered on a star system, too close to the heart of the Imperial Navy, and must be eliminated. The 181st Squadron is the first to respond, and is on their way to despatch the intruders. At the same time, the Emperor has sensed the presence of the Rebels, and have also sent out his personal Royal Guards to scrub away the scum. When both squadrons arrive at the battlefield at the exact same time (purely by coincidence), the Rebels find themselves caught in a contest between the 2 elite squadrons, where whoever wins, they lose.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

How it is going to work:

To celebrate the arrival of the new Imperial Aces, all participants will get to experience, first-hand, the fearsome skills of the new elite pilots.

After 3 rounds, the 1st and 2nd ranked players will set aside their 100pt squads, and select one of the 2 preset squad to use. (higher ranked player gets to choose, or audience will choose, or coin toss, depending on what happens that day XD)

The preset squads are:

Royal Guardians (75):

oxx[===> Carnor Jax + Expert Handling + Royal Guard TIE (28)

oxx[===> Kir Kanos + Royal Guard TIE (24)

oxx[===> Royal Guard Pilot + Veteran Instincts + Royal Guard TIE (23)

181st Sabers (75):

oxx[===> Turr Phennr + Elusiveness (27)

oxx[===> Tetran Cowall + Adrenaline Rush (25)

oxx[===> Lt. Lorrir (23)

Afterwards, each other participant in the tournament will field 1 Rookie Pilot Xwing, up to a total of 5 Xwings on the Rebel side. (If there are more than 5 Xwing pilots, the players ranked 3-7 will participate. If less, TO will make up the remaining numbers)

The 2 Imperial Aces players will setup the asteroid as per normal rules. Afterwards, the Rebel players will setup their Xwings on the Rebel side of the table, at least range 1 away from each other. The Imperial Aces will then setup their squadrons on the Imperial side of the table, within range 3 from the left side and right side respectively.

The player controlling the squadron that manages to get the most Xwing kills will be the winner of the contest / tournament, and will walk away with the Imperial Aces. (if something funny happens, eg. Rebels manage to wipe the Imperials, or a draw occurs, or etcetc, the 1st ranked player of the 1st 3 rounds will get the prize). Kills are awarded on a Last Hit basis.

The Rebel pilot flying the last Xwing to be eliminated will be awarded the Rebel Medal. (again, if anything funny happens, the player that was ranked the highest among the Rebel group wins the medal)

100point Escort tournament.

$7 entrance fee, prizes include official FFG plastic tokens and the big Han Solo / Boba Fett card.

Special rules will be used for this tournament. Details will be posted shortly.

Players are reminded to bring along the "Senator Shuttle" token, which can be found in the core set.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Special Rules for the 100pt Escort Tournament:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Overview:

The Defending player has 2 Escort tokens, of which he intends to safely escort off the map on the side directly across his side. The Attacking player intends to stop this from happening by destroying the Escort.

Players may bring any legal 100point team of their liking, and may be matched Rebels vs Rebels or Imperials vs Imperials. All players MUST bring the "Senator Shuttle" cardboard token (provided in the core set) (http://boardgamegeek.com/image/1457634/star-wars-x-wing-miniatures-game).

The Escort has the following stats:
============
PS (-1)
Agility 2
HP 6
0 points

The Escort does not take Crits, has no attack, has no actions, and is not affected by Ion tokens. The Escort can move bank 1 or forward 2. At the start of the Maneuver phrase, after all the maneuver dials have been set, the player controlling the Escort verbally declares his maneuver (eg. left bank 1), and moves the shuttle as per normal.

If the Escort moves into another ship, normal collision rules apply. Then, if the ship the Escort moves into is an enemy ship, your opponent rolls 1 red dice, and that ship takes a critical hit if the dice result is either a [focus], [hit] or a [crit]. (think of it as a reverse Anti-Pursuit Laser). If ships move into the Escort, normal collision rules apply, but your opponent does NOT roll for the critical hit.

-- As the Defending player, all your friendly ships gain the following ability: [ACTION]: Place 1 evade token on any Escort up to range 1 of this ship. The Escort may only have a maximum of 2 evade tokens at any point in time.

============

Deployment:

Before the match begins, both players will roll a D6 to determine who will be the escorting team or attacking team. The player who rolled a higher number decides. The Attacking player will pass his Escort token to the Defending player, such that the Defending player now has 2 Escort tokens.

The Defending player always has initiative. He picks 2 out of the 6 asteroids and places it one-by-one as per normal rules. There should be a total of 2 asteroids on the field, no more, no less. The Attacking player does not get to place any asteroids.

Both players then deploy their ships as per standard deployment rules, starting with the ship with the lowest PS (do remember that the Escort has a PS of minus one).

The Escorts must be deployed more than range 2 away from the left and right sides of the battle area (like asteroids)

~~~~~
Scoring:
The Attacking player wins if he destroys both Escort. The Defending player wins if an Escort (or both) escapes the battle zone.
The Escort must escape off the battle zone on the Attacking player's side in order for it to count (ie. escaping from the sides does not count). If any part of the Escort is off the battle zone, it is considered as escaped, and this occurs immediately.
A win gives the player 3 point, and a loss 1. In the event of time called, games will be played till either a Escort escapes or both Escorts are destroyed, and the winning player gets 2 point.
55point tournament @ BattleBunker Funan. Standard rules, 45 minute per round. 3 rounds total.
Each Player will prepare 2x 55pt teams for the tournament. More details to follow. Take note that the standard 55pt Banlist (no Han / stealth / R2D2) still applies.
$7 per person, prizes include official FFG alternate art cards and plastic tokens
Tournament Rules:
All Players MUST prepare 2 different 55 point lists. The lists can be 1 Rebel 1 Imperial, or 2 Rebel or 2 Imperials.
Both list can have only 1x unique pilot / upgrade. Eg. If my List A I used Luke Skywalker Xwing already, my List B cannot have Luke Skywalker, not even the crew upgrade. If List A has Squad Leader, List B cannot have squad leader.
Both lists can only have a maximum of 2 of the same unnamed mook (3x for TIE fighters). Eg. List A has 2 Rookie Xwings already, List B CANNOT contain any Rookie Xwings. The player may still use the same ship type, eg. He can use 2 Red Squadron Xwing for List B and not be penalized.
During the game, players will decide which Lists they want to fight against. YES, OPPONENT CHOOSE FOR YOU. Players will take a maneuver dial and set it to either Speed 1 turn/straight/bank etc or Speed 2 turn/straight/bank etc and reveal it at the same time to make their selection. Speed 1 for List A, Speed 2 for List B
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

For example, this is allowed.

Rookie Xwing + R2 astromech
Wedge Antilles + Marksmanship + R5 astromech

Rookie Xwing + R2F2
Luke Skywalker + Hull Upgrade

Between both lists, there are a total of 2 Rookie Xwings, and named cards only appear once
