Exposing the Colonel

By Jo Jo, in X-Wing

I was just kind of toying around with pilot/upgrade combos with the new wave 4 ships and I was seeing if anyone could use that stupid Expose card. I looked at the ships and thought the Defender might be a decent platfrom. Its got great stats and can take a few hits. The two pilots with an EPT that we know of are pricey though. On Brath, Expose would put you over 40 points and Brath is all about having a focus token.

However, Colonel Vessery might be the best pilot (besides Vader) to use Expose on so far. His ability is pretty much like having a FCS if you can get some supporting TLs on the ships you want to blast. He'll be pretty spendy at 39 points but he'll be able to dish out some serious hate. You'll definitely want to pair him with a shuttle or some bombers.

You'll want to Expose with him when you got a TL on your intended target. You now are pretty much an X-wing with a shield upgrade stat wise, with the firepower of a Phantom. You can roll your 4 or 5 attack die, then spend a TL for maximum punishment. It will be like having a HLC when you want it, for 4 points. Another possible scenario is surprising your opponent with a white K-turn and Exposing out of that turn. Hopefully you can be positioned where he can't shoot you back and then you don't have to worry about losing that extra agility.

A good pairing would be with a OGP w/ ST-321 and WPN Engineer for 27 points. That would put you at 66 points. Plenty for two ties or an interceptor and a tie.

Maybe, but I still don't know. Expose costs 4 points to equip and an action to turn on; an extra die plus his free TL is good, but I don't know if it's good enough to justify inflating his cost further (and potentially putting him in some jeopardy during the combat phase) when compared to the focus + TL he can easily manage. It's a pretty small bump, and running Expose means you're not running Outmaneuver or Veteran Instincts or even Adrenaline Rush (with those red turns…)

Expose isn't best suited to a ship, it's best suited to a play style.

At least, in my experience. :P .

As soon as the Rebel Aces releases I'd love to try it on 4 GSP's combined with Opportunist. A-Wings screaming in from any which way to open up at range 1 for a maximum of 5 dice each.

Expose + Opportunist < Opportunist + focus. This is the sad but true handicap Expose can't get over: an extra die isn't usually worth losing out on focus or target lock.

Maybe in terms of efficiency, but Expose + Opportunist > Opportunist + Focus in terms of fun and excitement.

Statistics do not concern me, admiral, I want fun, not excuses. :P .

He will have TL instead of a focus so its a wash statistic wise isn't it?

Some folks have done the math and Expose has been "exposed" as pretty much the worst card in the game for its price. Were it, say, 2 points (it does have a huge penalty for use, so 4 points is ridiculous), it would probably translate as fair and you could actually make decent use of it. For 4, there are precious few uses for it that even make thematic sense, much less actual tactical sense. I literally only ever use it on Vader.

Yeah, its pretty much a crappy card. Obviously you wouldn't tourney run this, but it could be fun casually.

Vessery - Expose - 39

OGP - ST-321, Wpn Engi, Engine Upgrade - 31

Backstabber - 16

Black sqd - 14

You can keep a TL on two targets and give Vessery his pick. Backstabber could give him another problem to worry about.

expose is much better off on the rebel side, due to the amount of TL / F stacking and passing around that they can do. With ease. With that said, I actually prefer Expose over Opportunist because when Im using Expose, I want my extra attack dice, and I already have a way to get a modifier. With opportunist, me having that extra dice is up to my opponent to choose, which s not a good thing at all, especially against more experienced players.

I have games where I totally did not manage to get even a single Opportunist attack out, because my opponent kept denying me from triggering it. Triggering opportunist seems to be more of an exception than the norm for me. With expose, I'm the one choosing when and where I get the extra attack dice, so no issues here.
