Worth flying bare interceptors?

By Norsehound, in X-Wing

Speculating on things to do with possible Imdaar lists, and I wondered if running Alphas with the Phantom and Defender would be a worthwhile thing. Interceptors have great mobility and better attack even without PtL, and this would be a case of forcing my enemies to shoot at either the Interceptors or the scary new ships.

I might be able to pull this off with alphas, I just wondered if bare interceptors were even worth it competitively.

The list that won one of the regional events was flying naked squints.

One of my harder hitting lists includes two Alphas, which I think is a decent choice for a naked interceptor, though many would argue for three Academy pilots.

I like 1-2 Alphas in a lot of contexts (and I'm running one right now in one of my Galactic Cup lists).

From my limited experience they are either blessed or frowned apon by the dice gods.

I have had squints one shotted enough to be wary but every time I swear them off my opponent destroys me with them. Not by maneuvers but by dice rolls.

Unless I specifically want throw away blocking Ties though, I probably would pick squints in most cases. That extra attack die is nice against the 1-2 green dice setup of the rebels.

I like running all base Interceptors but have only done so in friendly games, not tournaments. They have always lasted longer than expected and always stuck around to the last in multi-player games. You are of course always susceptible to a really bad evade roll.

Never pilots with ept's. I feel the ability to arc dodge is too great to ignore. Otherwise, yes.

I often like naked squints, but I do not like low PS squints.

naked squints are alright, provided you manage to find a way to get them to fire before they die. One easy way is swarm tactics. Another easy way is to give your opponent something else that is more dangerous for him to shoot at, eg most Firesprays.

I have a build that has been more successful that I thought it would be.

Alpha

The Alpha sits at the back of the little swarm with Howl, and BH gets used as a flanker/blocker. The Alpha gets to attack at 8 and enjoy's Howl's re-roll. It dishes out the hurt. Because of BH and Howl, it is not a primary target. It is a snake hidden in the grass.
