Our first full rules game

By SDCC, in X-Wing

Hi guys,

My brother BCooper85 and I had our first game using all the rules last night. We had previously played one quick rules game with just the core set. But yesterday I picked up an X-Wing and a TIE Fighter to give us a bit more to use.

This is all from memory, and I'm sure he'll fill in the gaps.

Ben
Luke Skywalker with an R2
Wedge Antilles

Chris
Mauler Mithel with Marksmanship
Backstabber
Dark Curse

So I think Ben was in the 60's with his total whilst I had 52. Advantage Ben, but I made it clear I wouldn't make a big deal out of it unless I lost ;)

It took a while, as there was a lot of 'what do I do in this situation?'.

Biggest annoyance was that I kept forgetting I could focus! Manoeuvred then remembered as we were attacking! Lesson learnt there hopefully.

Wedge is a pain, taking one of my evade rolls from me! In hindsight I should have kept him in range 3 to even that out. R2 sorting out Luke's shields didn't get used as much as I thought it would

The flow of the fight turned a couple of times. He was looking good and took out Mauler, but then I took out Luke. 2 against 1! He then took out Backstabber (I think) and then Curse/Wedge took each other head on after some dancing around the table.

Wedge won out, but only had 2 hull left, so I felt I'd ran him pretty close. Could have done things a lot differently, but first game and there was a lot to learn.

Several questions arose from last night, that we'll ask if we remember! Ben can clear this up but I think we were a bit confused by locking and focusing at the same time?

I was guilty of just throwing my TIE's at him and not thinking about getting behind.

Anyway, it was good fun and I'm looking forward to trying again. In June we'll be picking up another core set, so 5 TIE's against 3 X-Wings. Any thoughts on making that as even as possible? I've started using the Squadron Builder so hopefully I can figure something out.

EDIT - I did just realise I may have posted this in the wrong area. If any mods wish to move it that's cool :)

The only mods on this forum are Hull Upgrade and friends.

Welcome to the Forum.

Fly Casual.

And fly as often as you can. ;)

Just use the same number of squad points ;)

If you're attacking someone and you have a Target Lock on your target as well as a Focus token, you can choose to use none, one or both of them.

For example, if you were to roll 4 red dice and get: HIT, FOCUS, BLANK, BLANK. You could then use your TL to re-roll any or all of your red dice. In this case, you could re-roll both blanks and get CRIT, FOCUS. So you now have CRIT, HIT, FOCUS, FOCUS. You can now spend your Focus token to flip both of the focus dice to hits, so you have CRIT, HIT, HIT, HIT. And if a TIE Fighter rolls poorly for defense, fireworks!

Awesome! Thanks for clearing that up so.....clearly!

Yeah my poor TIEs could end up with a battering from that. I really need to remember to focus myself when I'm playing tonight.

Keeping the Ties in formation is the secret to winning with them. You want to try and have all of them fire upon the same target if possible. Howlrunner is the best Tie for a fleet of Ties. Keeping her close to the other ties will yield you more hits and could take down an X-Wing pretty fast. Search YouTube for videos on formation flying in X-Wing and you'll gain the upper hand.

welcome to the wonderful world of X-Wing!

Just to add to the above, all of that is exactly correct, formations are a tie's best friend. However this is one of the rules you need to know when to break. Sometimes it is better to envelop your xwing prey. Focus fire though, and try to have two targets in arc in case the first one breaks before you are done shooting.

Also welcome to the game and board.

I'll just add that while the advice for formation flying is good, setting up Backstabber as a flanker would also be very effective. It forces your opponent to either split his force to deal with it or ignore an aspect of it, and since Backstabber is a TIE he can give an xwing fits to pin down if you fly him well.

With 2 X-Wings vs 3 Ties, you have 6 attack dice to a side at range 2-3, but considering that the X-Wings have 10 total HP and 2 evasion dice, and the Ties have 9 total HP and 3 evasion dice, generics vs generics the Ties have an advantage.

If you're worried about one of your TIEs going down, picture this:

You've flown in formation, and all 3 of your TIE fighters are focused at Wedge.

Wedge shoots first, thoroughly wounding Backstabber, but not killing him, thanks to BS ditching his focus token.

All 3 of your Tie Fighters shoot at Wedge at Range 1. You roll 10 dice, 7 of which are focused. Wedge rolls 6 evasion dice, and has 5 total HP.

...yeah, how do you think that's going down?

You should splurge a little and pick up a Tie Interceptor expansion... then let's see what happens! :D

How does Dark Curse affect Wedge's focus token??

Dark Curse's effect only applies when Dark Curse is defending...

I changed which pilot Wedge was shooting at, and failed to fully edit

Ah, ok.

If Wedge is smart, he'll be shooting at Mauler Mithel though :P

Especially if Mauler Mithel used Marksmanship instead of focus.

Other thing to point out, Luke will also be firing before any of TIEs. Two range 1 shots on a TIE, including one from Wedge, is brutal. Good chance at least 1 TIE will go down before it even fires. Then it's 2 X-Wings vs 2 TIEs and that's not fun for the imperial player.

Fly Howlrunner! =) Especially when you get your next core set.

Even then, you might need another expansion for Imperials, because you can make a 100pt list with 3X.

Recommend the lambda, slave 1 or an interceptor.

Cheers guys. Lots to think about.

Last night we played again, and I attempted flying my 3 TIEs in formation. Lets just say it didn't go well.

I didn't even take one of them out. Which was erm....very frustrating.

I think I need to watch some videos to get a clue. I'm clearly missing something as I was rarely in a position to get several shots at one X-Wing.

At least I didn't forget to focus this time!

I'd like to be able to play decently and understand all the rules before I move away from the TIEs. Build a good base first.
